3M ANSI-Z89.1 full-brim H-800 hard-hat head-protection navy-blue outdoor

The 3M H-810V Navy Blue Full Brim Vented Hard Hat provides ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type I certified head protection with full 360-degree brim and ventilated shell construction — delivering the comprehensive sun, rain, and debris protection of full brim design with the airflow benefits of ventilation in the navy blue shell color that designates technical specialists, engineering personnel, and sub-contractor roles in many hard hat color-coding programs across industrial, utility, and construction environments. The H-810V is a full brim model in 3M's H-800 series — sharing the wide 360-degree brim that extends protection around the entire circumference of the helmet with the vented construction that provides passive airflow during outdoor work in warm conditions. Full brim hard hats are preferred for outdoor applications where the wider brim profile provides three functional benefits over cap-style designs: rain deflection from the face and neck when working in wet conditions, sun shade for the face and back of the neck during sustained outdoor work in direct sunlight, and peripheral debris deflection from overhead work near structures, scaffolding, and overhead equipment. For workers who spend extended periods performing overhead tasks, working below elevated construction, or working outdoors in variable weather, the full brim profile provides protection coverage that cap-style designs cannot match at the sides and rear. The navy blue shell color serves role identification in facilities and projects that assign blue in its darker navy variant to specific technical, specialist, or contractor categories — differentiating navy-designated personnel from the more common bright blue used for electrical and technical trade workers in basic color-coding programs. The H-810V uses a conventional suspension system appropriate for sustained full-shift wear with the ratchet adjustment that allows workers to precisely set their preferred fit, combined with the ventilated shell for thermal comfort during the extended outdoor work that full brim construction is designed for.

Full Brim Construction: 360° Protection for Outdoor Work Environments

Full brim hard hats have been preferred for outdoor construction, utility, and industrial work for over a century because the brim's 360-degree extension addresses hazards that cap-style hard hats — with their front-only or minimal side brim — cannot protect against. The practical advantages of full brim design are most apparent in four conditions: rain, sun, overhead work, and dust/debris exposure. In rain, the 360-degree brim deflects water runoff from the helmet shell away from the wearer's face and neck, keeping rain water from running down the back of the neck during forward-leaning overhead work and preventing the face-direction drip that occurs with cap-style helmet rain runoff. During sustained direct sunlight exposure, the full brim provides shade for the face, ears, and back of the neck — reducing UV exposure and solar heating for workers in agricultural, utility line, road construction, and outdoor industrial environments where prolonged sun exposure compounds heat stress. For overhead work below scaffolding, steel structures, and elevated equipment, the extended brim provides a wider debris interception profile that deflects falling particulates, concrete chip, scale, and incidental dropped material from a wider arc around the head. The H-810V's ventilated shell complements the full brim's outdoor protection with thermal comfort: the passive airflow through the shell vents reduces heat accumulation for workers whose full brim provides sun protection but whose solid non-vented shells might otherwise trap heat. The combination of full brim sun protection and vented thermal relief creates a comprehensive outdoor work configuration appropriate for the extended outdoor exposure that full brim users typically experience in their work roles. Navy blue shell color distinguishes the H-810V's intended users — technical sub-contractors, specialist trades, or specific engineering roles — from the general yellow and orange worker population within the same color-coding system.

Real-World Benefits

Full 360-degree brim provides rain, sun, and debris protection for outdoor work that cap-style helmets cannot match — keeping rain off the neck during rainy-day overhead tasks and providing face and neck sun shade during multi-hour outdoor utility and construction work in direct sunlight. Utility line workers and outdoor construction personnel who transition from cap-style to full brim hard hats in sustained outdoor conditions consistently report improved comfort during rain and sun exposure, with corresponding improvement in prolonged wearing compliance.

Ventilated construction reduces heat accumulation for workers in the warm outdoor environments where full brim helmets are most commonly used — addressing the thermal comfort challenge of sustained hard hat wear during summer construction and utility work where heat stress is a primary safety concern alongside fall and impact hazards. Outdoor construction supervisors who monitor hard hat compliance during summer heat waves find vented full brim models have better sustained wearing rates than non-vented equivalents during peak heat conditions.

Applications and Use Cases

  • Utility and outdoor construction — navy full brim vented for technical specialist identification — H-810V for technical sub-contractors and specialist trades in outdoor environments where full brim provides weather protection and navy color identifies their role under the project's color-coding system
  • Sustained outdoor work — full brim vented for rain and sun exposure environments — full brim ventilated construction for workers in agricultural, utility, and infrastructure environments where sustained outdoor exposure makes both rain/sun protection and ventilation comfort important for full-shift compliance
  • Sub-contractor programs — navy identification hard hat for specialist crews — H-810V for sub-contractor specialist personnel who wear navy hard hats for role identification on multi-contractor construction sites and benefit from full brim weather protection in outdoor work areas

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the practical difference between a full brim and a cap-style hard hat?

Cap-style hard hats have a brim only at the front of the shell, similar to a baseball cap profile. Full brim hard hats have a brim that extends 360 degrees around the entire shell perimeter. Full brim provides sun shading for the face, ears, and back of the neck; deflects rain away from the neck during overhead work; and provides wider debris interception from falling material. Cap-style hard hats are more compatible with headlamps and face shields mounted at the front brim, and fit more easily under some overhead clearance constraints. Full brim is generally preferred for sustained outdoor work in rain and sun; cap-style is preferred for indoor work and applications requiring front-mounted accessories.

Is navy blue different from standard blue in hard hat color-coding systems?

Hard hat color-coding systems are facility- and project-specific — there is no universal standard that assigns specific roles to navy vs. standard blue. In programs that distinguish between multiple shades, navy may designate different roles than bright blue. In most basic color-coding programs, navy blue and standard blue function interchangeably to identify technical, specialist, or sub-contractor personnel. When implementing or interpreting a color-coding program, verify the specific color assignments with the facility or project safety plan — the color's role-identification function depends on the program's documented convention, not universal industry standards.

How does the H-810V ratchet suspension compare to 3M's SecureFit pressure diffusion?

The H-810V uses a conventional ratchet suspension where the worker turns a dial or knob to set the retention headband circumference to their preferred fit. Each wearer sets their preferred ratchet position. SecureFit pressure diffusion suspension (used in the X5000 series) adapts automatically without manual setting. Ratchet suspensions provide precise, user-selected fit once adjusted but require manual action for each adjustment and create fit quality variation when multiple workers share a hard hat without individual re-adjustment. Pressure diffusion provides automatic adaptation but without the precise position control of a ratchet. For single-user helmets, both approaches provide good fit when properly adjusted. For shared-use applications, pressure diffusion's automatic adaptation provides more consistent fit across diverse wearers.

Great, comfortable hard hat
I tried the Pyramex full brim hard hat but it was terrible. I saw some reviews that were really good with this helmet. It arrived well packaged and fit well (it is adjustable with a dial).I tried the vented helmet for the hot NC days; however, I am not sure how it will do in the rain.I would suggest this helmet over any other hard hat.

Solid.
Looks sharp and a killer bargain. Having avoided all items being dropped on me to this point, I'll only say that it looks good and the vents are great. If something heavy falls on me, I'll come back and rate it further or leave instructions in my will to knock this baby down to 1-star and leave a scathing comment. ;-)

Better than expected
So I bought this and thought I had found a better one. Had the intentions of returning this BUT this thing is actually pretty nice. Much more comfortable than the msa’s for one a couple bucks more. Sits low on your head, doesn’t fall off when bending over. I’m extremely impressed. For the price Ill continue to buy these

Great Hard Had
I have worn this hard hat for about a week now to test it out in the shop before I wrote my review and I must say, it is a great hard hat for the price. The ratchet that came with it easily adjusts on the go and it sits lower on your head so it doesn't feel top heavy. I do a lot of bending over to perform visual inspection and not once did it fall off.

Cool helmet!
I am in Virginia Beach, VA, so needless to say., it gets very hot at times. The vents at the top allow the excess heat to escape, helping me stay at least a little cooler and more comfortable while working. The harness is also extremely comfortable.

sits high on large head
I have a big noggin. The headband adjusts suitably to fit around my head, but the 4 pt suspension is essentially flat and keeps hat sitting high. The dip cut of headband (at rear, near knob) does not get low enough to slip under the bulge at back of head, as designed. For smaller heads, suspension will likely allow headband to sit lower, allowing the dipcut to work and securely hold the hat on when leaning over, etc. Should have ordered the 6 pt, but it was/is? on back order....

Worth it!
Great hard hat! Bought this for my husband and we live in Florida so the air vents at the top help his head from sweating so badly.

Where is the liner!?!?!
I have ordered the same hard hat that actually came with the ratchet lining. For some reason, the same hard hat I ordered again for a co-worker that cant afford his own, is now left with just the hard hat. I guess we can use it to eat our rice out of! Don't advertise a product if you cant deliver. Pretty simple. I want my money back or send the liner that was supposed to be sold with it! Ridiculous. DO NOT BUY THIS HARD HAT! THEY CANNOT COMPREHEND COMMON SENSE!

Fits over a hat no problem
Pretty good hard hat. Stays on your head even with a hat. It’s also a little bit bigger of a brim, so provides just a little extra shade for the sun

Outside 5 Star inside 2 Star.
The suspension system inside feels very poorly designed. It works, yes, but it appears to sit a little higher than what I am accustomed to. It is adjustable, but not a good setup overall. The hat portion looks good. nice vents.
