Hazard Coverage — Gerson 3230 N95 Respirator — Box of 50

The Gerson 3230 N95 Respirator — Box of 50 is NIOSH-approved under 42 CFR 84 Subpart K for non-oil-based particulates at ≥95% efficiency. Approved hazards include construction and masonry dust, pollen, mold spores, smoke particulates, grain and wood dust, and certain biological aerosols. The 3230 is NOT rated for oil-based particles — spray paint mist, cutting fluid aerosols, and lubricant mist degrade N-class electret media faster than rated. For oil environments choose an R95 (oil-resistant, one shift) or P100 (oil-proof). Compare classes in our N95 vs P100 guide and the complete disposable respirator guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 3230 NIOSH-approved?

Yes. The 3230 is NIOSH-approved under 42 CFR 84 Subpart K as an N95 filtering facepiece respirator, confirming it filters at least 95% of airborne particles ≥0.3 microns. Verify the TC approval number on the NIOSH Certified Equipment List.

What does the N95 rating mean for the 3230?

The N in N95 stands for not resistant to oil — the 3230 is approved for non-oil-based particulates such as dust, pollen, mold spores, and smoke. It should not be used in environments with oil-based aerosols (spray paint mist, cutting fluid, lubricant mist). For oil environments, choose an R95 or P100 mask instead.

Can I reuse the 3230?

Disposable N95 respirators like the 3230 are designed for single extended use or limited reuse per OSHA guidance — they are not washable. Discard when the mask becomes soiled, damaged, hard to breathe through, or after use in a hazardous environment. Follow your employer's written respiratory protection program for reuse decisions.

Does the 3230 require a fit test?

Yes. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires a fit test before first use of any N95 respirator in a workplace where it provides occupational protection. Read our fit test guide for qualitative and quantitative options. The 3230 should seal flush against your skin without gaps at the nose bridge or chin.

How do I know the 3230 fits correctly?

Perform a user-seal check each time you don the mask: cup both hands over the mask and exhale sharply — if you feel air escaping at the edges, re-adjust the nose clip and re-seat the straps. Our respirator sizing guide covers fit factors by face shape. A proper seal is essential for rated N95 protection.

Is the 3230 safe for COVID-19, smoke, or wildfire ash?

An N95 like the 3230 filters particles at the same size range as many respiratory aerosols, smoke particulates, and wildfire ash. However, this product is an industrial respirator — it is not FDA-cleared as a surgical mask unless specifically noted. Check the product label for FDA clearance status if healthcare use is required.

How many 3230 respirators come in a box?

Pack size is shown in the product title and on the box. Browse the full disposable respirator catalog for available box counts — options range from individual pouches to bulk industrial packs.

Can I use the 3230 for spray painting?

No. Spray paint and primer produce oil-based aerosols that break down N95 electret filter media faster than rated. For paint booth and spray work, choose an R95 (oil-resistant) or pair an R95 or P100 with an OV/AG nuisance cartridge layer. See our full respirator guide for the right class.

What is the shelf life of the 3230?

Most disposable N95 respirators carry a manufacturer shelf life of 5 years from the production date when stored in the original sealed packaging away from sunlight, heat, and humidity. Check the lot code and expiration date printed on the box before use.

Do I need a medical evaluation before using the 3230 at work?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires a medical evaluation before an employee is required to wear a tight-fitting respirator at work. Employers must provide the OSHA Medical Evaluation Questionnaire (Appendix C) before fit testing. Voluntary use of filtering facepieces in non-hazardous environments has a simpler pathway — consult your safety officer.

What hazards does the 3230 NOT protect against?

The 3230 does not protect against gases, vapors, or chemical vapors — including carbon monoxide, solvent vapors, or ammonia. It also provides no protection against oxygen-deficient atmospheres. For those hazards, use a supplied-air respirator or a half-face/full-face respirator with the appropriate cartridge. See our disposable respirator guide for scope-of-use guidance.

How should I store unused 3230 respirators?

Store unopened 3230 respirators in the original sealed bag or box, in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, chemicals, and extreme temperature. Do not crush or fold the masks. Opened but unused masks can be placed in a clean paper bag in a dust-free area between uses — never in a pocket or toolbox where they can become contaminated or deformed.

Where were these during Covid? These are SO breathable. I love them!
These are the very first SAFE face masks that I can actually breathe through! I went on two long flights last month and didn't have to lift them once just to get a breath of fresh air! All the other N95 ones I've had were barely breathable.

Good seal, weak straps
I still mask regularly, and I've been on a continuous search for a good KN95 or N95. I was wearing a very popular brand of N95 for most of the pandemic. They didn't ever fail me, but they made my face very sweaty and yet somehow the seal was still not great - I knew this because it always fogged up glasses and sunglasses. KN95 are ok for lower risk settings, but absolutely none of them seal well for me and are usually way too big for my face. These Gerson N95 are the best I've found for me since the start of the pandemic. They don't make my face sweaty but still offer a good seal. This is the first and only mask I've ever put on that did not fog glasses or sunglasses on me even when aggressively exhaling to try to induce it. However, it is true - the straps are weak. Don't count on these masks if you want to re-wear the same one over and over. I have been able to re-use them a few times usually for short bursts, but the straps stretch and do snap quite easily. For me, this is worth it considering the comfort and the seal I get. I'm willing to deal with the straps. I always keep a few extra with me in case the straps break. I think it is trial and error and can be different for everyone, but it's worth at least trying one 5-pack to see how it works for you.

Very Disappointed
I bought these to be an alternative to the trusty v flex. I wanted a lighter option for summer. I mask in the grocery store and drs, so not a lot of use. 4 out of 5 mask busted between 1 and 3 uses. (They were delivered 18 days ago.) 3 of the straps broke while wearing and yes I was careful with them. It doesn’t matter bc they are flawed. You also cannot return them, which is frustrating considering this is a manufacturing issue.

Fit well & comfortable, but straps broke when removed
This mask fit my hard-to-fit face, and I did find it lightweight and comfortable (as far as n95 masks go). However *both* straps broke the first time I removed the mask.I am always careful removing my masks so I can rewear them. This one I was only trying on, so I wore it for maybe 10 min before removing it. It is not normal for mask straps to break so easily. I would definitely need to take several spares with me in case they break while putting on the mask.I’ve had a hard time finding n95 masks that fit me without leaks. I have a small/medium face, and my eyes are somewhat deep-set, so I get leakage above the nose wires of most masks. This mask did seem to fit without leakage.

Exceptional comfort, durability, and protection
I've long been a duckbill N95 aficionado, and the Gerson 3230 is the best I've ever tried. The large expanse of breathable material means these have an exceptionally low pressure drop; the ease of breathing is like wearing nothing at all. They have a wonderfully stiff and moldable solid metal nosepiece. The non-latex straps offer a comfortably snug fit no matter how many times I doff and don the respirator. This is a significant advantage over the Kimberly Clark/Jackson Safety/Kimtech duckbills whose blue crepey straps quickly become permanently stretched. Even though the Gersons are significantly more expensive, they are a better value since they aren't limited to one use like the Kimberly Clarks. (I rotate my N95s and reuse, but if you are using this in an occupational setting, these are technically disposable. I can, however, pass a fit test with a challenge aerosol wearing a repeatedly used Gerson.)The Gerson straps are a bit more likely to get caught in my long, wavy hair, however. The respirator material itself is not quite as smooth as the Kimberly Clarks', but it is still quite soft and likely to meet the needs of many with sensory issues.Sizing wise, these fit me as well as the regular size Kimberly Clarks. They look narrower, but the difference is mostly in the width of welded tabs so the functional size is not too different. These don't project so far out from the face, and since they are folded rather than welded at the tip, they dimple at the end. These are smaller than the regular size 3M VFlex and larger than the size small. These are fantastic for all-day comfort and for public speaking purposes since they muffle only very minimally. I've already gone ahead and placed a larger order since I want these to be my everyday mask. These are an outstanding N95 option that I cannot recommend highly enough.

Very comfortable and breathable.
These are by far the best N95 respirators in terms of comfort. They are roomy, seal well, you can actually speak and yawn and they are very breathable. They are a bit goofy looking so I don't use them as much when I go out, but that's me. I wish they came in colors. Buying them in a 5 pack is expensive, they also come in boxes of 50.

Effective but mildly uncomfortable
Wore these for a concert and 2 plane rides and they were effective. My main goal was to find a mask that wouldn't slide down while singing at the concert, and these were perfect for that. But my complaint is that they became extremely uncomfortable at the bridge of the nose, mainly after sitting in them for several hours. Very tight and caused some acne and scarring in the area for a little while after. (*Might be worth noting that I have a hooked/Roman nose, so the fit was different for me than it would be for those with different or smaller noses.) But overall they were very effective and did what I needed them to do.

Straps break easily
These have extra room for easier breathing. However, if you want to use them more than once or twice, be aware that the rubber band-type straps are not well attached and may break at any time.

Great mask
Really like how this mask provides a lot of space to breathe. This makes it more comfortable compared to other n95 masks. Although it is thinner than other masks, I feel like it is effective against dust and particles and pollution. One thing that I don’t like is that it is easy to break a mask, so you have to be very careful when putting it on or taking it off. I’ve had 2 masks break apart due to the strap breaking or the metal nose strip fell out.

Good seal for me
I get a great seal with this mask and feel very safe wearing it. I did not realize the elastic needs to be separated prior to wear, and I hated it the first time! A friend mentioned the rubber separation and this is probably the best fitting N95 I have worn. I do get very hot wearing these, but I have not found an N95 that doesn’t do that.
