MSA SoundControl SH Cap-Mounted Earmuffs Overview

The MSA SoundControl SH Cap-Mounted Earmuffs (10129327) are passive helmet-mounted hearing protectors with a laboratory NRR of 25 dB, built to clip into the accessory slots of MSA slotted full-brim hard hats.

As the MSA 10129327 earmuffs, these deliver MSA SoundControl NRR 25 as hard hat mounted earmuffs β€” cap-mount earmuffs slotted for the helmet, and true MSA V-Gard earmuffs.

They offer three wearing positions, glove-friendly ear-cup height adjustment, and a low-pressure comfort spring, and they are dielectric so they do not interfere with a compatible helmet's Class E rating. They fit MSA slotted and V-Gard frames, not universally. Learn more in what NRR means and when you need hearing protection.

Who It Is For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Noise + a slotted MSA hard hat Purpose-built NRR 25; clips into the slots.
Electrical work with a helmet Strong Dielectric; keeps Class E.
On-and-off through the shift Strong Three wearing positions.
Non-slotted or other-brand hat Check fit Not a universal cap-mount.
Use without a hard hat Choose headband This is cap-mount only.

Two things matter most. First, the NRR of 25 dB is a laboratory value, and real-world attenuation is typically well below the printed rating because of fit, seal, and wear time; OSHA and NIOSH have you derate the NRR when you estimate field protection under 29 CFR 1910.95, so plan for less than 25 dB, seat both cups for a full seal, and confirm the result with training or fit checks. Second, this is a cap-mounted model that clips into MSA slotted full-brim hard hats and V-Gard slotted and universal frames β€” it is not a universal cap-mount, so confirm your helmet has compatible slots, and it is dielectric so it does not interfere with a compatible helmet's Class E rating. Match the protection to your actual noise dose rather than assuming more is better, since over-protection can cut you off from warning signals. See highest-NRR options and best hearing protection.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Lab NRR 25; passive and simple
  • Frees the ears vs a headband under a hat
  • Dielectric; keeps Class E rating
  • Three wearing positions; comfort spring
  • Glove-friendly height adjustment
Cons
  • Field protection is below the lab NRR
  • Fits MSA slotted / V-Gard frames only
  • Cap-mount only; no headband
  • Passive; no electronic awareness

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the MSA SoundControl SH?

It has a laboratory Noise Reduction Rating of 25 dB. NRR is measured in a lab, so use it to compare products and then derate it for the field, rather than treating 25 dB as guaranteed protection at work.

Which hard hats does it fit?

It mounts into the accessory slots of MSA slotted full-brim hard hats and V-Gard slotted and universal frames. Confirm your MSA hard hat has compatible slots before ordering, since the cap-mount attachment is designed for those.

Will it fit a non-MSA or non-slotted hard hat?

Not reliably. The attachment is designed for MSA slotted helmets and V-Gard frames. It is not a universal cap-mount, so a non-slotted or other-brand hard hat may not accept it. Match the earmuff to your specific helmet system.

Does it reduce the hard hat's Class E electrical rating?

No. The SoundControl SH is dielectric and designed not to interfere with the Class E rating of a compatible MSA slotted full-brim helmet. Still confirm your specific helmet and accessory remain within their approved configuration.

Is it passive or electronic?

It is passive hearing protection: foam-cushioned cups that attenuate noise without electronics. There is no volume control or sound amplification. For situational awareness features you would need an electronic earmuff instead.

How many wearing positions does it have?

It offers three wearing positions on the helmet mount, so you can move the cups on and off the ears as needed. Return them to the full-seal wearing position whenever you are in a noise hazard.

Do I actually get 25 dB of protection in the field?

Usually less. Laboratory ratings are higher than what most workers achieve on the job because of fit, seal, and wear time. OSHA and NIOSH have you derate the NRR to estimate field protection, so plan for less than 25 dB.

How do I adjust the ear cups?

The cups adjust for height on the helmet mount with a grippy control that works even with gloves on, and the low-pressure spring keeps comfort up. Set them so each cup fully seals around the ear without gaps.

What standard does it meet?

The NRR is determined under ANSI S3.19-1974, the method used for the EPA label, and it meets CSA Class A. Hearing-protection use falls under OSHA 1910.95; follow your written hearing-conservation program.

Can I replace the ear cushions?

The foam cushions wear over time and should be replaced with the correct MSA hygiene or replacement parts when they harden, crack, or stop sealing. Fresh cushions keep the attenuation and the comfort where they should be.

Is 25 dB enough for my noise level?

It depends on your measured noise dose. Match the derated field protection to your exposure so you reduce noise to a safe level without over-protecting, which can isolate you from warning signals. A safety manager or industrial hygienist can advise.

Can I use it without a hard hat?

No. This is a cap-mounted model that attaches to a slotted helmet, so it has no headband. If you need hearing protection without a hard hat, choose a headband or neckband earmuff instead.

Great Accessory for MSA Full Brim Hardhats
A great MSA full-brim hardhat accessory for those who work around noisy equipment. Snaps right into place in the MSA hardhat side slots and provides a comfortable and quite work environment, these clamp well enough to work great over a hardhat liner, which is nice in the winter.I chose these over other designs because they specifically work with full brim hardhats, as you can see by the probounced crook in the arms, many other brands only work with the Cap style hardhats. These things are good quality, they easily fold back and ride along side the hardhat dome when not in use, making transitions between loud and quiet environments easy. When worn over the ears provide a very secure hardhat attachment. They do add a bit of weight way up high, but it's worth it for me working out of a pickup truck maintaining gas compressors stations where exteame noise levels from Cummins and CAT engines and compressor Blowdowns will deafen a guy in short order.Though they are $10+ more than other well known models, I highly recommend this style for it's specific design meant for the MSA full brim models. The alternative is an earmuff set with the behind the neck crossband.

If you don't protect your hearing, you might say yes to the wrong thing. Dont be that guy!
Wide brim hard hat ear protection. They work great. Been using them for about 3 years. Easy and quick to use. Sick and tired of taking off your gloves to jam in ear plugs with dirty hands or worse you cant find any before your coworker goes to town with the jack hammer/ road saw. Or maybe you’re just tired of listening to that one guy who doesn't get the hint. These wont solve all your problems but it’s a step in the right direction.

Very nice set of hearing protectors
I go to various manufacturing plants on a regular basis and had been using the foam earplugs for years. Now that I go to plants more, I decided to invest in a pair of these ear protectors. Glad I did. They are lightweight, fit perfectly on my bump cap and I can easily hear conversations while at the same time they are muffling the ambient noise.

The rubber grommet breaks but you can do a DIY fix and it turns out ok
The little grommet that attaches the muffs to the arm rips in half. It has a manufactured hole inside that I ran a little bolt through from the inside of the muffs under the foam to the outside of the arm to attach the muffs to arm after the grommet broke off. this is the second pair I've owned and with both I had to run a little bolt through the grommet. I like the muffs and still bought the second pair knowing they'd break in the same spot. I just lost my first pair along with the hard hat. It's an easy fix if not a little time consuming. with the second pair I didn't wait for it to break on the job. I just opened the box and made the repair before I was on the job. Also I don't know how to get my picts orientated right. they were right on my computer, sorryEdit 8/17/2019 Was just looking through my old reviews and saw this one. I upgraded it to a four star since I still own this set of earmuffs. After doing the repair I talked about up top these muffs hold up good. As long as you can hold on to your hard hat and not lose it the muffs will last as long as the hat. Side note, on windy days I will use the muffs to make sure I don't lose my hard hat. Usually I work in and out of noisy job sights and I'm not a fan of earplugs. I love the earmuffs because I can put them on when I need them and take them off when I don't. my hands are usually dirty so putting in earplugs and taking them out all the time would get that dirt in my ears.So in short. I've had this same pair for three years now and they're still on the job.

Comfortable and Durable
I use these earmuffs on my MSA V-Gard full brim hard hat. They work great, keep the noise down, keep crap from getting in my ears, and hold my hard hat on. They are pretty durable, at times they get put up and down quit a bit and last a lot longer than the 3M model that I had been using, I wish MSA offered a Bluetooth version, that is why I was using the 3M X4'S, 3M offers a Bluetooth option with boom microphone. All in all I am satisfied with my purchase, there are not a lot of options when it comes to full brim hard hats. I would recommend these.

Great addition to a full brim hard hat -- wish I had purchased sooner
Finding ear muffs for a full brim hard hat is a bit more challenging than a regular hard had, but these fit the bill.I had a previous pair that are the wire mount (as opposed to the plastic) and they never really seemed to fit right or block that much noise. Not so with these. The plastic ones are AWESOME. Much tighter fit that blocks out much more noise (primarily due to the fit I am sure). I often wear in-ear headphones under these and they are much more comfortable than my other set.)My only non-raving review comment would be that because they are such a tight fit, after a while they can get a bit uncomfortable, but not unbearable -- especially given that they block much more noise than other options.

Works
These work with full brim hard hat. But the plastic/ rubber seal around the ears seems a little cheap. Not high quality like my Milwaukee brand. But they don't make full brim ones. I wish I could get full brim high quality and Bluetooth to play music. Someone should work on that.
