3M 60923 P100 Acid Gas Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridge overview

The 3M 60923 P100 Acid Gas Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridge is a NIOSH-approved combination cartridge for 3M bayonet respirators β€” a sorbent bed adsorbs organic-vapor solvents and acid gases while a bonded P100 media captures at least 99.97% of oil and non-oil airborne particles, all in one housing. It wears the magenta P100 band and mounts to 3M reusable half masks and full facepieces. Reach for the 60923 when a single task exposes you to solvent vapor, acid gas, and dust at the same time, rather than pairing a gas cartridge with a separate particulate filter. See our how to choose a respirator cartridge guide and the 3M filter and cartridge guide to confirm your exposure before ordering.

This is a combination cartridge β€” not a particulate-only filter and not a single-hazard gas cartridge. If your only concern is airborne dust, a P100 particulate filter does the job for less; if the air holds organic vapor and acid gas but no dust, the gas-only 3M 6003 OV/AG cartridge is cheaper. For a broader gas mix that adds ammonia and formaldehyde, step up to the 3M 60926.

Safety note β€” no coverage beyond its NIOSH rating.

The 60923 guards only against the organic vapors, acid gases, and particulates within its NIOSH rating and assigned cartridge limits. It will not stop ammonia, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, or other gases outside its approval, and no cartridge supplies oxygen. Oxygen-deficient, unknown, and IDLH atmospheres demand supplied-air equipment or another solution specified by a qualified safety professional. If ammonia or formaldehyde is in play, move up to the 3M 60926 multi-gas cartridge. A cartridge or filter carries no assigned protection factor of its own β€” the APF comes from the facepiece it is fitted to: 10 for a half mask, 50 for a full facepiece (OSHA 1910.134 Table 1), which is the number that decides the highest exposure the respirator may legally be worn in. That facepiece must be fit tested before first use and at least annually, and a fit test is specific to one make, model, and size β€” passing on one mask does not carry over to another. Perform a user seal check every time the respirator is donned, and note that facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator no matter how well it fit at the last test.

Where it fits

Identify the contaminant before choosing any cartridge β€” ideally through an industrial-hygiene assessment. Reach for the 60923 in chemical processing and tank cleaning, mixed-solvent spray and coating, and general plant maintenance where solvent vapor, acid gas, and dust or overspray occur together. For particulate-only work, use a P100 filter like the 3M 2091 instead; for acid gas with dust but no organic vapor, the 3M 60922 is the match; for organic vapor with dust but no acid gas, the 3M 60921 is the match. Browse the organic vapor cartridges collection or the acid gas cartridges collection for related options.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • OV + AG + P100 in one cartridge β€” no stacking
  • Value price β€” same class as the costlier 60928
  • Oil-proof P100 (99.97%) particulate layer
  • Standard 3M bayonet β€” fits half and full facepieces
Keep in mind
  • No ammonia, methylamine, or formaldehyde coverage
  • Overkill (and pricier) than a gas-only 6003 if there is no dust
  • More than you need if your hazard is dust-only
  • Does not fit Secure Click or non-3M respirators

Frequently asked questions

What does the 3M 60923 protect against?

Organic-vapor solvents, acid gases (such as chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen fluoride, and chlorine dioxide), and particulates at P100 (99.97%) efficiency. It does not stop ammonia, formaldehyde, or carbon monoxide.

Does the 3M 60923 include a particulate filter?

Yes. It carries a bonded P100 particulate layer, so it captures dust, fume, and mist alongside gas and vapor β€” no separate filter or retainer is required.

Is the 3M 60923 cheaper than the 60928?

Generally, yes. The 60923 and 60928 are the same OV/AG/P100 protection class, and the 60923 is the value-priced option. Unless your program specifies the 60928, the 60923 gives identical coverage for less.

What respirators does the 3M 60923 fit?

3M bayonet respirators: the 6000, 6500QL, and 7500 half masks and the 6000, 7800S, and Ultimate FX FF-400 full facepieces. It does not fit Honeywell North, Moldex, MSA, GVS, or 3M Secure Click.

What is the difference between the 3M 60923 and the 6003?

The 6003 is a gas-only OV/AG cartridge with no particulate filtration, while the 60923 adds a P100 layer to the same organic-vapor and acid-gas sorbent. Choose the 6003 when there is no dust, and the 60923 when dust, mist, or overspray is also present.

Is the 3M 60923 good for spray painting?

Yes, when the coating gives off both solvent vapor and overspray β€” the sorbent layer captures the vapor and the P100 layer captures the particulate. If no acid gas is present, the 60921 (OV/P100) covers spray painting too, often for less.

Does the 3M 60923 protect against carbon monoxide?

No. No air-purifying cartridge protects against carbon monoxide. CO exposure requires a supplied-air respirator selected by a qualified safety professional.

Does the 3M 60923 protect against formaldehyde?

No. It is not rated for formaldehyde. For formaldehyde exposure, use the 3M 60926 multi-gas/P100 cartridge.

What is the NIOSH color code for the 3M 60923?

Magenta marks the P100 particulate layer, and the cartridge additionally carries the organic-vapor and acid-gas designation.

How many 3M 60923 cartridges do I need?

3M bayonet cartridges install as a pair, one on each side of the facepiece. Confirm the exact pack quantity on the current listing before ordering, as packaging can vary.

When should I replace the 3M 60923?

Replace it on your employer's change-out schedule, or sooner if it is damaged, breathing gets harder, or you notice odor, taste, or irritation β€” an early warning of gas or vapor breakthrough.

Should I buy the 3M 60923 or a separate cartridge and filter?

The 60923 combines gas, vapor, and P100 protection in one housing, which is simpler and often cheaper than stacking an OV/AG cartridge with a separate particulate filter and retainer. If your hazard is single-class, a dedicated cartridge or filter still costs less.

Reviewed by Steven Eaton, WC Safety. Specifications reflect 3M's published data for the 60923 OV/AG/P100 cartridge; respirator selection should follow OSHA 1910.134 and a workplace hazard assessment. Cartridge change-out schedules should be established per manufacturer guidance.

Works well
When I'm wearing this, I can't smell anything, which I guess means it's working. I use it whenever I'm working with bleach, ammonia, acetone, spray paint, wood stain, pesticide, herbicide, sandpaper (rust or wood dust), or anything else with toxic fumes or dust or spray. I'll use these for up to 40 hours of me being in a thick cloud of spray paint and I can't smell a thing.

My go-to organic canister
A must have for spray painting or working with other organic solvents (varnish, lacquer, etc.) and working on swimming pool chlorinators. These have been my go-to organic canisters for years. They last a long time and keep me safe from all kinds of chemicals that I'd rather not breathe in. Airflow is good as well so breathing doesn't take too much effort. Just make sure to verify the fit and seal of your respirator each time and follow ALL THE DIRECTIONS ON THE PACKAGE.

Filters out the odor of decomposing matter.
In my line of work (Think first responder, Coroners Office), I occasionally have to respond to situations where decomposing matter such as a dead body that’s been left rotting for long periods of time are present. Anyone who’s been unfortunate enough to experience such an odor knows how distinctly sickening that odor is. These filters (60923) filter out the odor completely making it impossible to smell and be effected by the rancid smell of decomposing matter. Well worth the money.

Cartridges to avoid Anaphylaxis while entering a Moldy and VOCs laden apartment complex.
Thank God I was able to get these VOCs respirator cartridges in 2 days. Having mold and VOCs inside my apartment and being anaphylaxis to mold along with their mycotoxins, Penicillins/Erythromycins etc,. these cartridges SHOULD allow me safer passage inside the apartment here in Shoreline, WA. Unfortunately, while relocating from Southwest FL, I found myself in a new apartment where management kept the washer and dishwasher sealed closed for weeks. I am hopeful that I can enter into that apartment and retrieve some of my items for which can be decontaminated.

Professional-grade protection and long-lasting performance
The 3M 60923 P100 cartridge/filter pair is an outstanding choice for serious respiratory protection. These filters are NIOSH-approved and protect against a wide range of hazards, including organic vapors, acid gases, and particulates β€” ideal for use in painting, grinding, chemical handling, and sanding environments.I use these with my 3M 6500 and 6800 series masks, and they attach easily with the bayonet-style connection. The fit is secure and airtight, and they offer low breathing resistance even during long work sessions. The P100 rating means you’re getting 99.97% filtration efficiency, which is as good as it gets for particulates.Durability is excellent β€” each filter lasts through multiple uses depending on exposure level, and I’ve had no issues with smells, fumes, or dust getting through. They’re more expensive than generic options, but in terms of quality and peace of mind, they’re worth every penny.Q&A:Q: What types of hazards do these cartridges protect against?A: They protect against organic vapors, acid gases, and oil/non-oil particulates, meeting NIOSH P100 standards.Q: Are these compatible with 3M full- and half-face respirators?A: Yes β€” they fit all 3M 6000, 7000, and FF-400 series respirators using a bayonet connection.Q: How long do these filters last?A: It depends on use, but for most jobs I get multiple work sessions before needing to replace them.Q: Do they reduce airflow or make it hard to breathe?A: Not at all β€” breathing is smooth and easy, even when working in high-heat or dusty conditions.Q: Are they reusable?A: Yes β€” reuse is possible as long as there’s no damage or heavy saturation. Always store in a sealed bag

Worth every penny
These replacement filters are great. They fit really tight with no leaks. They arent overly heavy and filter great. It is better to spend the extra money to get a good quality filter than to buy something that replicates it and doesn't give you the protection that you need. The Durability feels really well made. When installed breathing isnt restricted and the ease of install is fantastic. Simple twist and lock.
