ANSI Z87.1 Anti-Fog Chemical Splash Eye Protection Face Shield Grinding OSHA Polycarbonate

Sellstrom 32152 Plasma/Flame Cutting Face Shield Review

The Sellstrom 32152 is an ANSI Z87.1-compliant welding face shield designed for welding, torch cutting, and arc operations. Constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate, it provides full-face coverage from brow to below the chin β€” protecting the face, cheeks, and jaw from hazards that safety glasses and goggles cannot address alone. Adjustable: Shield includes universal slot adapters that tightly secure and fit most slotted hard hats for easy customization.

Construction and Materials

The lens window is constructed from injection-molded polycarbonate, providing high impact resistance that exceeds acetate in ANSI Z87.1 high-impact testing, with strong resistance to UV-induced surface crazing. Anti-fog coating on the interior lens surface reduces condensation buildup during active work and temperature transitions. The flip-front design allows the lens to pivot up for task transitions without full headgear removal. This is a replacement lens window for existing headgear frames, allowing continued use when the original lens degrades. Material: Premium clear, anti-fog coating, polycarbonate window curves naturally to fit facial contours ensuring reliable protection. The lens window extends coverage across the full frontal face profile with side geometry providing lateral protection. Construction meets or exceeds ANSI Z87.1 high-velocity impact requirements.

Compliance and Ratings

Rated to ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA 1910.133 for eye and face protection in welding and thermal cutting operations. ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 governs occupational eye and face protective devices; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 mandates its use in workplaces with documented eye and face hazards. Additional ANSI Z49.1 compliance is required for welding; the lens shade must match the welding process and amperage per that standard. Assembly: Includes spring mounted Shade 5 IR flip front for oxy/acetylene cutting, brazing and plasma/flame cutting.

Performance

In welding environments, the shield protects against optical radiation, spatter, and slag. Confirm the shade number matches ANSI Z49.1 requirements for the specific welding process and amperage in use. Certified: Meets ANSI Z87.1+ and CSA Z94.3 standards; Replacement parts available for lower cost of ownership. The anti-fog treatment maintains vision clarity during temperature transitions and sustained exertion.

Strengths

  • Polycarbonate lens provides ANSI Z87.1-rated impact protection for welding applications
  • Anti-fog coating maintains clear vision in warm, humid work environments
  • Compatible with standard face shield headgear assemblies
  • Adjustable headgear fits most adult head sizes
  • Flip-front lens enables quick task transitions without headgear removal
  • Full-face coverage from brow to chin provides protection not achievable with safety glasses alone

Limitations

  • Face shields do not seal the eye surround β€” safety glasses or welding helmets must be worn underneath in chemical splash and grinding environments per OSHA 1910.133
  • Lens scratching from abrasive contact degrades clarity over time; replacement lenses should be sourced when transmission quality decreases
  • One-size-fits-most headgear may not accommodate all head sizes or hard hat platforms; verify compatibility before crew-scale procurement

Recommended Use Cases

MIG, TIG, stick, and flux-core welding; torch cutting and brazing; plasma cutting; foundry operations with molten metal splash. Appropriate for any OSHA-regulated workplace where face and eye hazard assessments document a risk requiring face shield-level protection.

Verdict

The Sellstrom 32152 face shield delivers ANSI Z87.1-compliant protection for welding applications in a polycarbonate construction suited for industrial environments. Buyers should verify headgear compatibility and application requirements before crew-scale procurement. What to check before you buy

A face shield is secondary protection
ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 treats face shields as secondary protectors. They are worn over primary eye protection - safety glasses or goggles - not instead of it.
Marking tells you the rating
Look for the Z87 marking, and Z87+ for high impact. Additional letters cover splash and droplet (D3), dust (D4) and fine dust (D5).
Window material and coating
Polycarbonate handles impact; acetate resists chemical splash better. Anti-fog coatings matter more than most buyers expect in humid or hot work.
Headgear and crown adapters
Shields mount to a ratchet headgear or to a hard hat via slot adapters. Adapter compatibility is not universal across hard hat brands.

Frequently asked questions

Can a face shield replace safety glasses?

No. Under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 a face shield is secondary protection and must be worn over primary eye protection. On its own it leaves the eyes exposed to particles coming from beneath or the sides.

What does the Z87+ marking mean?

Z87 indicates the product meets the standard for basic impact; the plus sign indicates it meets the high-impact requirements. The marking appears on the shield and the frame or headgear.

Which window for chemical splash?

Look for the D3 splash marking. Acetate windows generally resist chemical attack better than polycarbonate, while polycarbonate is the stronger choice against impact.

Can I mount a shield on my hard hat?

Usually yes, using slot adapters - but adapters are specific to the hard hat suspension and brand. Check compatibility rather than assuming a universal fit.

How do I stop a face shield fogging?

Choose an anti-fog coated window, allow airflow behind the shield, and avoid sealing the gap at the chin. Coatings wear, so fogging that returns is often a sign the shield needs replacing.

Where do the specifications on this page come from?

They are taken from the manufacturer's published listing. WC Safety does not laboratory-test products, and nothing is claimed here that the manufacturer does not state.

GREAT FACESHIELD!
Great shield and it is so crystal clear that you forget you even have it on!It does not fog at all an I have been using it outdoors to grind steel plates in over 90F weather.I wear safety glasses or my own Rx glasses underneath, still no fog.Very pleased on how it covers face all the way to my neck under the chin!Fits my hard hat very well and very easy to adjust for keeping up or down.

Awesome product
Face shield installs easily. Very sturdy, thick face shield. I ordered a face shield with helmet combo and the shield on that is flimsy and flares out. This is sturdy and protects very well. Very satisfied with product. Only issue is the price. Little pricey but I better safe than sorry I guess.

Nice!
It looks exactly like the picture I like the fact that he gives you selections for what tent the visor can be and the visor itself is also removable with a screwdriver and it can just be the face shield very nice for the price.

Doesn’t sit right
Face shield cuts in too far so hits your face part way down and won’t go the rest of the way down. Do not recommend

Has so much potential
If I wear it properly, it touch’s my nose, chin and dives into my neck. Too much of an angle inward. Should be straight down. I can not wear it at work because I can’t wear it all the way down. It’s very clear and of nice quality otherwise.

Great 2 in 1 shield.
If you get tired of flipping goggles or lifting them off, this works great. Protects full face. Tint flips up without having to lift shield. However watch your head clearance when shield is up and tint shade hasn't been put back down.

Uncomfortable to use
When mounted onto a hard hat, the face shield doesn't come down far enough, and when you try to get it all the way down to cover your face it ends up touching your nose and chin. This is on a Klein Hard hat.
