What to check before you buy

Cut-retardant, not cut-proof

Chainsaw chaps work by pulling loose fibers into the drive sprocket to stall the chain. They reduce injury severity; they do not guarantee no injury.

Damaged chaps are finished

Once the protective layer has been cut or the fibers pulled, the garment has done its job and is retired. Chaps are not repaired.

Coverage length

Chaps must cover the full length of the leg down to the top of the boot. A gap at the ankle is exactly where the saw ends up.

Can chainsaw chaps be reused after a cut?

No. Once the protective fibers have been pulled, that area no longer functions. The garment is removed from service.

Does a mesh face screen replace safety glasses?

No. Mesh screens stop chips and debris but not fine particles or liquids. Safety glasses are worn underneath as primary eye protection.

Are chainsaw boots really necessary?

Foot and leg injuries are among the most common chainsaw injuries. Chainsaw-rated boots combine cut protection with the toe protection and grip the work demands.

Do chaps protect against electric chainsaws?

The mechanism depends on the chain drawing fibers into the sprocket, which works with electric saws too - but a high-torque motor may not stall as readily. Check the garment rating.
