husqvarna technical apron wrap chainsaw chaps β what the listing actually specifies
What to check before you buy
Chaps stop a chain; they do not stop contact. Cut-resistant leg protection works by pulling fibre into the sprocket and stalling the saw, which means it is a last defence after technique, footing, cutting plan and a properly maintained chain brake. Leg protection for chain-saw work is covered by ASTM F1897, and OSHA requires it for logging operations under 29 CFR 1910.266(d)(1)(iv). Replace chaps once the outer layer is cut through.
- Cut-retardant, not cut-proof
- Chainsaw chaps work by pulling loose fibers into the drive sprocket to stall the chain. They reduce injury severity; they do not guarantee no injury.
- Damaged chaps are finished
- Once the protective layer has been cut or the fibers pulled, the garment has done its job and is retired. Chaps are not repaired.
- Coverage length
- Chaps must cover the full length of the leg down to the top of the boot. A gap at the ankle is exactly where the saw ends up.
- Head, eye and hearing together
- A forestry helmet system combines a hard hat, mesh face screen and earmuffs because chainsaw work presents all three hazards at once.
