The 3M 60923 P100 Acid Gas Organic Vapor Respirator Cartridge is a NIOSH-approved combination cartridge for 3M bayonet respirators β a sorbent bed adsorbs organic-vapor solvents and acid gases while a bonded P100 media captures at least 99.97% of oil and non-oil airborne particles, all in one housing. This is a combination cartridge β not a particulate-only filter and not a single-hazard gas cartridge. If your only concern is airborne dust, a P100 particulate filter does the job for less; if the air holds organic vapor and acid gas but no dust, the gas-only 3M 6003 OV/AG cartridge is cheaper. The 60923 guards only against the organic vapors, acid gases, and particulates within its NIOSH rating and assigned cartridge limits. It will not stop ammonia, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, or other gases outside its approval, and no cartridge supplies oxygen. Oxygen-deficient, unknown, and IDLH atmospheres demand supplied-air equipment or another solution specified by a qualified safety professional. If ammonia or formaldehyde is in play, move up to the 3M 60926 multi-gas cartridge. A cartridge or filter carries no assigned protection factor of its own β the APF comes from the facepiece it is fitted to: 10 for a half mask, 50 for a full facepiece (OSHA 1910.134 Table 1), which is the number that decides the highest exposure the respirator may legally be worn in. That facepiece must be fit tested before first use and at least annually, and a fit test is specific to one make, model, and size β passing on one mask does not carry over to another. Perform a user seal check every time the respirator is donned, and note that facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator no matter how well it fit at the last test.
