What the TopTes Guard-863Pro detects (and what it doesn’t)

The Guard-863Pro detects oxygen (O2), combustible gas (LEL), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). It does not read VOCs, CO2 or single toxics like chlorine or ammonia — those need a PID or dedicated sensor. It is a diffusion instrument; for remote pre-entry sampling choose a pump unit such as the Forensics Detectors 4 Gas Monitor with Pump. Bump-test with standard four-gas calibration gas before use; the 5-year O2 cell reduces sensor swaps. For single-worker all-shift wear, add a clip from Personal & Wearable Gas Detectors.

Cross-shopping? This unit sits in our Portable Gas Detectors hub alongside the Forensics Detectors 4 Gas Meter, Forensics Detectors USB 4 Gas Monitor, TopTes Guard-101, TopTes Guard-156. If one worker needs all-shift wear instead of a carried meter, see Personal & Wearable Gas Detectors; for a fixed install or a job-site perimeter, see Fixed Gas Detection Systems and Area & Transportable Gas Monitors.

Frequently asked questions

What gases does the TopTes Guard-863Pro detect?

It reads oxygen (O2), combustible gas (LEL), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). For VOCs you need a separate PID; see the Portable Gas Detectors hub for other instrument types.

How long does the Guard-863Pro O2 sensor last?

Its upgraded oxygen sensor is rated for a 5-year lifespan — longer than typical electrochemical O2 cells, which lowers replacement cost over time.

How long is the battery life?

Up to 18 hours per charge, enough for long shifts and multiple confined-space entries before recharging.

Can I export data from the Guard-863Pro?

Yes — it supports USB data export for logging gas readings and keeping compliance records.

Is the Guard-863Pro good for confined-space entry?

Yes for ongoing monitoring of the O2/CO/H2S/LEL hazards. For sampling a sealed space before entry, use a pump-equipped monitor.

Does it have a color screen?

Yes — a TFT color display that is easier to read at a glance than a monochrome LCD, especially in bright or dim conditions.

How does the Guard-863Pro compare to the Guard-101?

The 863Pro adds a color screen, longer battery, USB export and a 5-year O2 sensor; the Guard-101 is a simpler, lower-cost LCD unit.

Does it come calibrated?

It is factory-calibrated; bump-test with four-gas calibration gas before use and calibrate on the manufacturer's schedule to keep readings accurate.

What alarms does it have?

Audible, visual and vibration alarms trigger when any gas exceeds its preset threshold.

What does it not detect?

No VOCs, CO2, or specific toxics such as ammonia or chlorine. For VOC monitoring use a PID; browse the Portable Gas Detectors hub.

Is it in stock and how does it ship?

Use the Amazon buy button for current availability and delivery timing through our fulfillment partner.

Is the Guard-863Pro industrial grade?

It is a strong value-tier monitor for crews and facilities. Large managed-fleet programs usually specify Industrial Scientific or BW Honeywell instruments with docking automation.

Very Nice Detector
This is a very nice gas detector. We have some at work that are not as nice and cost a lot more. It has a very quick response to changes in gas levels. It was quite easy to use and has lots of settings and configuration options. The product page shows the two display modes, and the ability to view trends of the different gas levels is nice. It only shows the last 60s, but that is enough for standard active monitoring. The default display is to show all four gases at once. There is an option to export from the device to a computer, but it requires software that is not currently available in English. I contacted the manufacturer, and they are currently working to get the software ready. Their response to my inquiry was quick and professional.-- 2025-05-28 Update --They have released English software for your PC to connect to the meter. From within the software, you can do the following:1. Synchronize the time in the meter with your computer time.2. Export records from the meter to your computer.3. Clear records from the meter.4. Export records from the software to an Excel file.Getting the software from the manufacturer was abnormal. Customer service sent it to me embedded in a Word document. Not the preferred method to obtain software, but it works, and I haven't detected anything malicious yet.

Peace of mind
This is a handy tool to have if you are a DIY fixit guy/gal that works on things in areas that could potentially be hazardous as far as air quality goes. For instance I have had to crawl down in my crawl space several times to work on our furnace and I had some concerns as to whether the space was safe for breathing. With this I am a little more at ease knowing that at least these levels are safe. The unit is easy to use, once turned on it does a self check every time to make sure everything is working as it should. You are able to see the instant levels of each sensor on the main screen, if you would like to see a graph of the level you are able to switch to graph view and see a graph over the last minute of what the levels have been. This unit also lets you modify the min and maximum levels for the unit to alarm. There is also a log you can view from within the device that will tell you of any alarm, sensor failure, or calibration records. This is helpful so you can concentrate on just leaving the area when the alarm goes off and once you are safe you can go back and review what was unsafe about the area.I am so glad they ship this with a good storage box. The box is a little flimsy but looks rugged and should be plenty to keep the device protected. I was disappointed to not see a rubber gasket to protect the device from liquid while in the box. The foam insert holds the device and everything you need for it in place.

Reliable and Versatile Gas Monitor — Perfect for DIY Projects and Homebrewing Safety
I received the Guard-863Pro 4 Gas Monitor and was impressed right away. It came well-packed and was ready to go straight out of the box. I'm not a professional, but I take on a lot of DIY projects at home—and I also do homebrewing—so I wanted something to help keep my workspaces safe. This device fits the bill.Setup was easy. I charged it fully, powered it on in fresh air to zero it out, and went through the manual to get familiar with the functions and alarm thresholds. The color screen is bright and easy to read, and it’s built tough—explosion-proof with a solid battery life that lasts a full 18 hours. As a DIYer and homebrewer, here are a few specific ways this monitor is useful:🧪 Homebrewing: Keeping an eye on air quality in closed spaces where fermentation gases or propane burners are used.🔧 Garage Projects: Detecting combustible gases when working with fuels, adhesives, or solvents.🛠 Crawl Spaces: Checking for oxygen depletion or gas accumulation before entering tight, poorly ventilated areas.🔌 Generator Use: Ensuring safe levels of carbon monoxide when running a backup generator outdoors near the home.🏡 Gas Leak Troubleshooting: Helpful for identifying potential issues near stoves, heaters, or gas lines.I also recommended this to a friend who’s starting a home inspection business. This monitor could be a great add-on to offer indoor air and gas detection reports for clients. To test the sensors, I ran a few simple checks:✅ Oxygen (O₂): I sealed the monitor in a plastic bag for a short time to simulate a low-oxygen environment. The reading dropped and the alarm triggered just as expected.🔥 Carbon Monoxide (CO): I lit a match, blew it out, and held the monitor near the smoke. CO levels spiked quickly and the alert went off.🥚 Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S): I cracked a raw egg in a small enclosed space with the monitor. As the egg began to release gases, the H₂S sensor picked up some activity—though it’s not always a strong or reliable method without official test gas.🧯 LEL (Combustible Gas): I gently released a small puff from an unlit butane lighter near the sensor. It immediately detected the gas and set off the alert. The build quality, ease of use, and clear readouts make this a fantastic tool for anyone working on projects around the house or in a startup inspection role. It provides a layer of safety and peace of mind that’s absolutely worth having. Highly recommended.
