Short answer: every 3M Ultimate FX replacement part fits all three facepieces — the FF-401 (small), FF-402 (medium) and FF-403 (large) — because size lives only in the facepiece itself. Nothing in 3M's spare-parts table carries a size suffix: the same FF-400-04 head harness, FF-400-03 lens assembly, FF-400-11 nose cup and 7582 inhalation valves service every Ultimate FX in the fleet. That single fact simplifies a maintenance cabinet enormously, and it comes straight from the parts table in 3M's current user instructions (©2026), which this guide follows line by line.

One rule governs everything below. OSHA's respiratory protection standard, 29 CFR 1910.134(h), requires respirators to be maintained in a condition that retains their original effectiveness, and the NIOSH caution printed in the FF-400 approval materials says it without qualification: never substitute, modify, add, or omit parts — use only exact replacement parts in the configuration specified by the manufacturer. A repair with the right 3M part number preserves the approval. A repair with a lookalike voids it.
Read the parts list the way 3M wrote it
Two current 3M documents define the FF-400 parts family: the user instructions packed with the respirator (the master parts and accessories table, plus every replacement procedure) and the FF-400 tech data sheet (materials, approvals and a condensed spare-parts table). We pulled both fresh for this guide, and where they differ in wording — the user instructions call FF-400-08 the "Bayonet Assembly Inhalation Valve," the data sheet just "Bayonet assembly" — the user instructions win, because they describe what is actually in the bag: bayonet ring, bayonet and inhalation gasket.
Three reading rules keep you out of trouble:
- The numbering has gaps. FF-400-12, -14, -16, -17 and -19 do not exist in either document. A listing offering one of those "part numbers" is selling something 3M never cataloged.
- The exhalation valve has two legitimate numbers. 3M's table reads "7583 or 6583" for the Cool Flow exhalation valve — both are genuine, and the same dual listing appears in the 3M 6000-series documentation. Either services the FF-400-07 valve assembly.
- Assemblies and their internals are separate lines. The FF-400-07 exhalation valve assembly is the quarter-turn housing; the 7583/6583 valve is the silicone flap inside it. The FF-400-08 bayonet assembly is the port hardware; the 7582 inhalation valve is the flap that rides on it. Buy the level of the failure, not the whole stack.
Inspection finding to part number
3M's instructions require inspecting every component before each use, and OSHA's 1910.134(h)(3) makes routine inspection an employer duty — so the most useful way to organize this parts family is by what the inspection turns up. After any valve or seal-path work, 3M's procedure ends the same way every time: conduct a negative-pressure user seal check before the respirator goes back in service. The part 3M does not sell: the faceseal
The FF-400 assembly description names the faceseal — small, medium or large — as a distinct component, and the lens-replacement procedure even has you separate the faceseal from the lens and put it back. But go looking for a faceseal line in the parts table and it is not there. No FF-400-numbered faceseal exists in the user instructions or the tech data sheet. The silicone seal that touches your face is the one component 3M treats as the identity of the facepiece: when it is cut, torn, or has taken a set that a seal check can feel, the repair is a new facepiece, not a part.

It is also the honest answer to the repair-or-replace question. A harness, a valve, a nose cup, even the lens: those are rational repairs on a mask whose seal is sound. A degraded faceseal on a facepiece that has been in service for years, on the other hand, usually means the silicone elsewhere is aging too — and a fresh FF-401, FF-402 or FF-403 resets every wear surface at once, seal included.
The frame that clamps lens to faceseal — FF-400-05, frame assembly with screw — is cataloged, but we found no credible Amazon listing for it either. If a frame cracks, order FF-400-05 through a safety distributor rather than gambling on a lookalike; it is the one structural part holding the seal path together.
Service procedures, in 3M's sequence
The user instructions give exact procedures, and their choreography matters — several parts can only come out after the parts in front of them. The deepest chain runs: nose cup off, valve cover off, exhalation valve assembly out, speaking diaphragm out, bayonets out, frame screw out, and only then does the lens separate from the faceseal. Highlights worth knowing before you order:
- Valve cover: depress the bottom with a thumb and slide the cover up, parallel with the lens. It snaps back on downward over the guide tabs. No tools.
- Exhalation valve assembly: quarter-turn counter-clockwise and it lifts out of the lens center port; quarter-turn clockwise to a firm stop reinstalls it.
- Exhalation valve: with the assembly out, pull each valve stem from the seat, inspect the seat for damage and debris, then pull the new 7583/6583 stems through from the opposite side until both snap in place — and push laterally on the stems to confirm they are seated.
- Nose cup: grasp below an inhalation valve and pull up and away from the lens; to install, align the hard plastic ring and press until the tabs snap — center first, then the top of the ring.
- Speaking diaphragm: behind both the nose cup and the exhalation valve assembly; quarter-turn counter-clockwise to remove. If it comes out, everything in front of it comes out first.
- Bayonet assemblies: quarter-turn the ring counter-clockwise, lift the bayonet off, align the key on the new bayonet with the lens slot, and lock the ring back clockwise.
- Head harness: unsnap each buckle from its button, pull the end tabs out through the buckles at an angle, and re-thread the new harness flat on a table with the 3M logo facing up — straps untwisted before the buckles snap home.
- Lens and frame: one Phillips screw holds the frame. Alignment marks top and bottom must line up across lens, faceseal and frame at reassembly — a misaligned frame is a leak you built yourself.

The dual-airline exception: valves out, valves back in
One FF-400 configuration deliberately removes parts. When the facepiece is assembled with 3M dual-airline combination breathing tubes (SA-1600 or SA-2600) for supplied-air use, 3M's instructions require the facepiece inhalation valves to be removed. The critical half of that sentence is its mirror: if the facepiece returns to air-purifying mode — cartridges and filters instead of the airline — the inhalation valves must be reinstalled before use. A crew that runs both modes should treat spare 7582 valves as a stocked consumable and make the valves-in check part of the changeover, because a facepiece breathing through open valve seats in air-purifying mode has no inhalation check valves at all.
Accessories, glasses and fit testing
3M draws a line between replacement parts and accessories, and two accessory decisions matter more than the rest:
Corrective eyeglasses cannot be worn under the mask. Temple bars cross the faceseal and break it — 3M's warning is explicit that a spectacle kit must be used instead. The FF-400 has its own kit, FF-400-20, and 3M also catalogs the 102 universal spectacle kit; both mount inside the facepiece so the lenses ride where glasses would, without anything crossing the seal line.
Lens covers are the cheap insurance. The FF-400-15 peel-away lens cover and the FF-400-18 stacked lens cover exist so overspray and grinding debris land on a sacrificial film instead of the polycarbonate. Painters strip a cover and keep working; a scratched lens is an FF-400-03 purchase and a teardown. The math favors covers every time.

What crosses over from other 3M series — and what does not
The FF-400 uses 3M's standard bayonet connection, so the air-cleaning side is broadly shared: 6000-series cartridges and 2000, 2200, 7000 and 5000-series filters are the NIOSH-approved companions, the same families the rest of 3M's bayonet masks use. The facepiece hardware is a different story. The FF-400-numbered family belongs to the Ultimate FX alone — 6000-series harnesses, lenses, nose cups and adapters do not interchange, and the FF-800 Secure Click is a separate system that does not even accept bayonet filters. The genuinely shared numbers are the small ones: the 7582 inhalation valve, the 7583/6583 exhalation valve, the 102 spectacle kit, 504 wipes and the 601 adapter appear across 3M's reusable-respirator documentation.
One trap deserves its own paragraph. Search any marketplace for an FF-400 speaking diaphragm and the results fill with the 7895 speaking diaphragm kit. That is a 3M 7800S-series part. The FF-400's part is FF-400-13, we found no credible Amazon listing for it, and nothing in 3M's FF-400 documentation lists 7895 as a substitute. The NIOSH caution — exact replacement parts only, in the configuration the manufacturer specifies — is the whole answer: a diaphragm that threads in is not a diaphragm that is approved.
