Fixed monitoring answers a different question from anything you wear

A personal monitor answers “is the air where this worker is standing safe right now?” A fixed four-gas transmitter answers “has this room developed a problem?” — and it can answer that at three in the morning with the building empty, before anybody opens the door.

That is the case for fixed detection in a nutshell. The hard part: four gases, four densities, one mounting height

Here is the problem nobody warns first-time buyers about. A four-gas transmitter is a single box on a single wall at a single height — but the four gases it watches do not behave the same way in a room.

  • Hydrogen sulfide is heavier than air and collects low: sumps, pits, floor level, the bottom of a stairwell.
  • Methane and most light combustibles collect high, under the ceiling. Heavier hydrocarbons such as propane do the opposite and pool at floor level.

Which is why fixed-system design is a real engineering task rather than a matter of picking a wall: you site the unit for the gas that is most likely and most dangerous in that room, you account for where the sources are and how the ventilation moves air, and in a large or awkward space you accept that one transmitter is not enough. A long gallery with one monitor at one end has a blind half, and a monitor mounted in a fan discharge reads diluted air and under-reports the room it is supposed to protect.

The relay output is what makes it a control, not just an alarm

The feature that separates a fixed transmitter from an expensive noise-maker is the relay output. Rather than only sounding locally, it can switch something: start an exhaust fan, energise a horn and strobe outside the door, signal a building management system, or in some designs initiate an equipment shutdown.

That capability changes what the monitor is for. Ventilation can run on demand rather than continuously, which is how enclosed plant spaces are economically kept safe. A remote beacon can warn people before they open the door rather than after they are inside. And a signal to a BMS means the event is recorded and escalated even if nobody is on site.

Two consequences for budgeting. First, this is a system purchase, not a device purchase — count wiring, the fan or beacon it drives, and commissioning. Second, in a classified hazardous location the wiring method itself is regulated, and that has to match the area classification rather than being decided on site. Where the space is a compressor room or a fuel-gas gallery, involve whoever owns the electrical classification before you buy.

Commissioning: an installed monitor is not yet a working one

Fixed instruments fail silently. A wearable that stops working gets noticed the next time somebody bumps it; a wall-mounted unit can sit showing a calm green display for a year while its cells are dead, because a sensor reading zero and a sensor reading nothing look identical from across the room.

So commissioning is not paperwork. Prove three things before you call the installation complete: that each channel responds to test gas at the sensor, in place, not on a bench; that the relay actually starts the fan or beacon it is wired to; and that the setpoints are the ones the design called for rather than the factory defaults.

Then diarise the calibration interval and the sensor replacement window at installation rather than discovering them at an inspection.
