What to check before you buy
Personal protective equipment is the last line of defence, never the first. Under 29 CFR 1910.132 the employer must first eliminate or engineer out the hazard and control what is left administratively; PPE covers the residual risk. Where the residual hazard is a chemical splash hazard, an IDLH atmosphere or an energised circuit, the control is a zero-energy state or a supplied-air system, not a better consumable.
- Protecting bystanders, not the welder
- Screens exist to stop arc flash reaching passers-by. The welder still needs a helmet with the correct shade.
- Shade and transmission
- Screen color and transmission are chosen to block UV and IR while letting supervisors see the work area. Darker is not automatically better if it forces people to look around the screen.
- Coverage at the bottom
- A gap at the floor lets reflected arc light out at eye level for anyone seated or at distance. Screens should reach close to the floor without becoming a trip hazard.
- Fire resistance
- Curtains near hot work must be flame resistant. Ordinary plastic sheeting is a fire hazard in this application.
