SAS Derma-Tuff general purpose nitrile gloves explained

SAS Derma-Tuff is the brand's everyday workhorse β€” a 6 mil black nitrile disposable glove built as a true general purpose nitrile gloves option. It is powder-free, latex-free, exam grade, fully textured for grip, and finished with a beaded cuff for easy donning. At 6 mil it carries real puncture and chemical resistance (SAS says 3x–5x the puncture resistance of latex) while staying dexterous enough for tools and small parts.

These 6 mil black nitrile gloves cover the whole spread of jobs: they are dependable workshop nitrile gloves, the sas derma tuff gloves line is a shop favorite, and as everyday nitrile gloves they move from the garage to the kitchen without a second thought.

What these gloves are for

The one box you keep on the shelf for everything β€” automotive and shop work, agriculture and plumbing, janitorial and cleaning, painting, and food service. They are ranked in our heavy-duty nitrile gloves guide, our nitrile gloves for mechanics guide, and our best black nitrile gloves guide. The material background is in our nitrile gloves complete guide and nitrile vs latex gloves.

Compatibility

Good for incidental contact with shop chemicals, oils, and cleaners; as an everyday glove it is not for sustained immersion in aggressive chemicals β€” use a dedicated chemical-resistant glove for that. For lighter kitchen and cleaning work, see our nitrile gloves for cleaning guide, and the powder-free build is covered in powdered vs. powder-free nitrile gloves.

How Derma-Tuff compares

Within SAS, the Raven 7 mil steps up for chemical and puncture protection, the Astro-Grip 7 mil orange adds a dual-sided grip texture, and the Raven Patriot is a themed 7 mil sibling; Derma-Tuff is the lighter, everyday 6 mil. Against other 6 mil black gloves, the exam-focused Inspire 6 mil is a direct rival, and the GLOVEWORKS 5 mil steps down. Browse the full nitrile gloves collection and the wider hand protection range organized by thickness, color, and use.

Safety note: nitrile is latex-free, so Derma-Tuff suits workers with a latex allergy β€” but a disposable glove reduces, and does not eliminate, chemical exposure risk. It is rated for chemical resistance against incidental contact, not prolonged immersion; confirm compatibility with your specific chemicals, replace gloves showing tears or punctures immediately, and use a chemical-resistant glove where the task demands more.

Ordering FAQ

Is SAS Derma-Tuff available and ready to ship?

Availability changes β€” open the linked listing for live price, size and count options, and delivery speed before you order.

What makes Derma-Tuff a good general-purpose glove?

SAS builds it as an everyday all-rounder: 6 mil black nitrile that is fully textured for grip and has a beaded cuff, tough enough for shop and automotive work but comfortable for cleaning, food, and light tasks too.

How thick are they?

6 mil β€” a heavy everyday weight with more puncture and tear resistance than a thin 3–5 mil glove, while staying dexterous enough for tools and small parts.

What is the beaded cuff for?

A beaded (rolled) cuff edge resists roll-down and makes the glove faster to pull on, which helps when you change gloves often through the day.

Are they chemical and puncture resistant?

Yes β€” SAS rates Derma-Tuff for chemical and puncture resistance and says nitrile is 3x–5x more puncture resistant than latex. That covers incidental contact; for prolonged immersion in aggressive chemicals use a chemical-resistant glove.

Are they powder-free and latex-free?

Yes β€” powder-free and 100% nitrile with no natural rubber latex, so there is no powder residue and no natural-latex proteins.

What sizes are available?

Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, and 2X-Large. Reviewers consistently note they run small, so if you are between sizes or wear a snug glove already, order a size up.

Are they food-safe and exam grade?

Yes β€” they are exam grade, and SAS lists food service among the uses. They are non-sterile; for sterile procedures choose a glove labeled sterile.

Are they good for automotive and mechanic work?

Yes β€” that is a core use. Reviewers rely on them for engine, tire, and forklift work, praising the grip and tear resistance even after prolonged use. See our nitrile gloves for mechanics guide.

How do they compare to the SAS Raven?

The Raven is a 7 mil glove positioned for chemical and puncture resistance; Derma-Tuff is the 6 mil general-purpose everyday glove. Same brand, different weight and focus.

Can I reuse them?

They are single-use gloves from the nitrile gloves range, though the 6 mil build lets reviewers get more than one use on lighter tasks. For food, medical, or contamination-control work, use them once.

By Steven Eaton, WC Safety Editorial β€” hand protection desk. Specs are drawn from the manufacturer listing and published product data; we do not invent test results or carry one glove's ratings onto another. Match glove thickness, grip, and task to the job.

Reading a cut level, and why the letter matters

Industrial hand protection is rated to ANSI/ISEA 105, which scores cut resistance A1 to A9 by the gram load required to cut through at a fixed distance β€” and the scale is not linear. A9 withstands roughly nine times the load of A1, and the jump from A4 to A5 is far larger than A1 to A2. The European equivalent, EN 388, uses letters A–F on a different test, so an EN rating does not map cleanly onto an ANSI level.

ANSI/ISEA 105 also scores abrasion, puncture and, where relevant, impact β€” which is a separate rating from cut and is the one that matters for back-of-hand protection. OSHA 1910.138 requires hand protection selected for the specific hazard, which is why a cut level alone is not a specification.

⚠ Cut resistance is not cut proof, and no glove rating covers a moving blade drawn under load. Ratings also degrade with wear, contamination and laundering.

Order next size up!!!
Great thickness for engine work. However, I wear a VERY consistent size large glove and these "large" gloves were way too tight. I recommend moving one size up which I'll be doing once I go through my current box.

Tough gloves
I buy these gloves month after month, they always have my glove size in stock (XXL) and I can always get multiple boxxes for a good price. Gloves fit well and don't tear easy when working on tires or other parts of vehicles. Even after prolonged use the grip of the glove never goes away either.

Comfortable and durable
I am satisfied with these gloves. I work on a lot of projects that I'd rather keep off my hands - tractor repairs, truck repairs, or various other things that I might just want to keep off my skin. These 6mil gloves fit the bill well. Others have said they fit weird for an XL but in my experience they actually fit my hands and fingers perfectly - no complaints. Easy to put on and take off, and way more durable than expected for 6 mil.I tested them during a porcelain tile install in my bathroom. I wore them to keep thinset and grout off of my hands. They did really well. No loose material at the ends of my fingers to get in the way, and had enough grip that I wasn't bobbling things. That being said, I feel that the current price of $18 is a little high compared to other similar offerings in the $12-$13 range, so you may find a better value out there. The value factor is why I gave four stars instead of five.
