Pyramex RJ31 Waterproof Bomber Safety Jacket Overview
The Pyramex RJ31 Waterproof Bomber Safety Jacket is an ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 3 hi-vis jacket with a waterproof polyester shell tested to AATCC 127 and a zip-out polar fleece liner for warmth.
As the Pyramex RJ31, this Type R Class 3 hi-vis bomber jacket is a genuine waterproof hi-vis jacket and a hi-vis bomber jacket with fleece liner β effectively an ANSI Class 3 rain jacket for cold, wet work.
It has 2-inch reflective striping, a concealed detachable hood, waterproof elastic at the waist and wrists, a black lower body to hide grime, and eight pockets including a clear-panel chest pocket. It comes in lime or orange, S to 5X. It is a hi-vis garment, not flame-resistant, and this is the standard, not the heated, version. Learn more in what ANSI/ISEA 107 means and best hi-vis rain gear.
Who It Is For
| Use case | Fit | Buyer guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Cold, wet roadway work | Purpose-built | Waterproof shell + fleece liner. |
| High-speed & low-light traffic | Purpose-built | Type R Class 3, highest visibility. |
| Two-season wear | Strong | Zip out the liner in milder weather. |
| Arc-flash or flash-fire | Not rated | Needs FR or arc-rated hi-vis. |
| Battery-heated warmth | Choose heated | Order the separate heated RJ31. |
A high-visibility jacket does one job well: it makes you conspicuous so drivers and equipment operators can see you, which is why ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R Class 3 is specified around traffic. It does not cover every hazard on that jobsite. If your work also puts you at height β on a bridge deck, an overpass, a sign structure, or an aerial lift β being visible does nothing to arrest a fall, and you still need a personal fall arrest system of an anchor, a full-body harness, and a connecting device. This jacket is also waterproof but not flame-resistant or arc-rated, so for arc-flash or flash-fire exposure you need FR or arc-rated hi-vis apparel that meets the relevant standard. And keep it performing: repeated washing eventually degrades both the fluorescent color and the waterproof finish, so retire it once it fades or stops shedding water. See the hi-vis apparel guide and when you need hi-vis to match the garment to the hazard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RJ31 actually waterproof?
Yes. Unlike a weatherproof softshell, the RJ31 has a waterproof polyester shell tested to AATCC 127, plus waterproof elastic at the waist and wrists. It is built to keep rain out on wet jobs, which is the main reason to choose it over a water-resistant softshell.
What does Type R Class 3 mean?
Under ANSI/ISEA 107, Type R is roadway apparel for workers near traffic, and Class 3 is the highest visibility level, requiring sleeves and the most background and reflective material. Class 3 suits high-speed or low-light environments where a vest is not enough.
Can I remove the fleece liner?
Yes. The polar fleece liner zips out, so you can wear the insulated jacket in the cold and the shell alone in milder wet weather. That makes it a two-season jacket: warm and dry in winter, and a waterproof shell when you do not need the insulation.
How many pockets does it have?
It has eight pockets, five outside and three inside, including a chest pocket with a clear panel for a phone or radio, plus mic tabs and a pencil pocket. That storage suits carrying tools, a radio, and everyday essentials on the job.
Does it have a hood?
Yes, it has a concealed, detachable hood you can deploy in rain and wind or remove and stow when it is a snag hazard or not needed. Removing or stowing the hood does not change the jacket's Type R Class 3 rating.
Is it flame-resistant or arc-rated?
No. The RJ31 is a high-visibility, waterproof garment under ANSI/ISEA 107 only; it is not flame-resistant or arc-rated. For arc-flash or flash-fire exposure you need FR or arc-rated hi-vis apparel that meets the relevant standard as well.
Why does it have a black lower body?
The black bottom helps conceal dirt and grime that would show on a fully fluorescent jacket, keeping it looking serviceable longer. The jacket still carries the background and reflective material needed to meet Type R Class 3 above that panel.
What colors and sizes does it come in?
It comes in hi-vis lime and hi-vis orange, in sizes small through 5X-large. Choose the color your site specifies and size for the layers you will wear underneath, especially if you plan to keep the fleece liner in during winter.
Can I wear it over cold-weather layers?
Yes. With the fleece liner in, it is already insulated, but you can also layer a hi-vis or base layer underneath in extreme cold. Size up if needed so the Class 3 shell fits over your layers without pulling.
How do I care for a waterproof hi-vis jacket?
Follow the care label; repeated washing eventually degrades both the fluorescent background and the waterproof finish. Wash as directed, avoid harsh bleach and fabric softener, and retire the jacket when the color fades, the tape lifts, or it stops shedding water.
When should I replace it?
Replace it when the fluorescent fabric fades, the reflective striping cracks or peels, the waterproofing fails, or the garment is torn. Faded or damaged high-visibility apparel no longer performs and may not meet ANSI/ISEA 107.
Is there a heated version of the RJ31?
Pyramex offers a separate heated RJ31 jacket, but this listing is the standard waterproof fleece bomber without heating. If you specifically want battery-heated warmth, confirm you are ordering the heated model rather than this one.
