What to check before you buy
Impact protection and splash protection are different tests. ANSI Z87.1 rates spectacles for impact, but only a device marked for splash (D3) is evaluated against a chemical splash hazard; safety glasses with open sides do not qualify, and a face shield is a secondary protector worn over primary eye protection rather than instead of it.
- Splash, dust and fine dust are separate ratings
- ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 marks D3 for splash and droplet, D4 for dust and D5 for fine dust. A goggle rated for dust is not automatically rated for chemical splash.
- Direct versus indirect venting
- Indirect vents keep liquid out while allowing airflow, which is the chemical-splash configuration. Direct vents breathe better but let splash through.
- Seal against the face
- The seal is the whole point of a goggle. Facial hair, temple arms of prescription glasses and poor strap tension all break it.
- Goggles are primary protection
- Unlike a face shield, goggles are primary eye protection - and are what a shield should be worn over.

What the Z87.1 marking on the frame means
ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is a marking standard as much as a test standard: what the device passed is stamped on it. Z87 alone is basic impact; Z87+ is high impact, tested with a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 feet per second and a pointed drop weight. The plus sign is the difference between eyewear rated for grinding and eyewear rated for dust.
Hazard letters follow: D3 splash and droplet, D4 dust, D5 fine dust, W with a shade number for welding, U for UV scale, L for visible light filter, R for infrared. The frame and the lens carry marks independently, and a frame rated Z87+ fitted with an unrated lens is not rated eyewear.
Fit is the part that fails first
Eye protection only works while it is in front of the eyes. The most common failures are not impact failures - they are eyewear pushed up onto the forehead because it fogged, slid, or pinched at the temples over a shift. Adjustable temple length and a frame matched to face width do more for real protection than a higher impact rating on eyewear that comes off.
Side protection is part of the requirement, not an extra. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 eye protection must provide side protection where there is a hazard from flying objects, which is why a rated frame carries integral side shields or a wrap-around lens rather than clip-ons.
