- What is a Personal Fall Limiter (PFL)?
- A PFL is a compact, retractable device that locks within inches of a fall rather than feet, minimizing fall distance and arresting force compared to a traditional shock-absorbing lanyard. The TurboLite is certified to ANSI Z359.14. ANSI/ASSP Z359.14-2021, effective August 1, 2023, retired the Class A/Class B system and replaced it with Class 1 and Class 2, which describe anchorage position and leading-edge capability rather than stopping distance β so a Class A device does not simply become a Class 1 device. Read the class off the device label.
- Does the Miller TurboLite require annual recertification?
- No β unlike many competing SRLs, the Miller TurboLite does not require annual factory recertification. Inspect before each use per ANSI Z359.14 requirements.
- What is the maximum capacity of Miller TurboLite PFLs?
- All TurboLite models are rated for users up to 400 lb (combined body weight and tools), higher than the standard 310 lb rating of most shock-absorbing lanyards.
- Where does the TurboLite attach on the harness?
- The TurboLite attaches to the back D-ring of a full-body harness. Some models include a unit connector (carabiner) for direct harness attachment; others (MFL-3, MFL-4) attach directly to the harness D-ring without a separate connector.
- What is the Twin Turbo system (MFLB-12)?
- The Twin Turbo system includes a D-ring connector and two TurboLite PFLs for continuous 100% tie-off. Workers can connect to one anchor, then connect the second unit before disconnecting the first, maintaining fall protection at all times.

- Free fall distance and total fall clearance
- A shock-absorbing lanyard can extend substantially during deployment. Total clearance must account for free fall, deceleration distance, harness stretch and a safety margin below the worker.
- Shock absorber matched to the worker
- Energy absorbers are rated for a capacity range including tools. A worker outside the rated range changes the arrest forces.
- Anchorage strength
- OSHA requires anchorages for personal fall arrest to support 5,000 lb per attached worker, or be designed with a safety factor of at least two under a qualified person.
- Retire after any arrest
- Any lanyard or SRL that has arrested a fall is removed from service permanently, along with the harness.

How much clearance does a shock-absorbing lanyard need?
More than most people assume. You must add free fall distance, the deceleration distance as the absorber deploys, harness stretch, the worker height below the D-ring, and a safety margin.
What anchorage strength does OSHA require?
For personal fall arrest, anchorages must support at least 5,000 pounds per employee attached, or be designed and installed with a safety factor of at least two under supervision of a qualified person.
Can I reuse a lanyard after a fall?
No. Once a fall has been arrested, the lanyard, energy absorber and harness are removed from service permanently, even if they look undamaged.
What is the difference between a lanyard and an SRL?
A lanyard is a fixed length with an energy absorber; a self-retracting lifeline pays out and locks like a seatbelt, which shortens free fall and reduces required clearance.
