MicroClimate Air3 Powered Respirator Overview

The MicroClimate Air3 powered respirator (Air3 Kit) is a NIOSH-approved (TC-21C-1374) loose-fitting PAPR. As a MicroClimate Air3 Kit PAPR, no fit testing is required, and the powered blower maintains positive pressure inside the respirator rather than depending on a facial seal.

Safety note: this is a NIOSH-approved loose-fitting PAPR, not a supplied-air or SCBA system - it filters ambient air rather than supplying breathable air from an independent source, so it is not appropriate for IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. This listing does not confirm gas or vapor cartridge protection; confirm the exact filter type and rated hazards with MicroClimate before relying on it for anything beyond typical particulate protection. Use only within a written respiratory protection program under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134.

The MicroClimate Air3 USB-C respirator runs on a 3.7V, 13.2Ah, 49Whr battery rated for over 8 hours of runtime with a 3.5-hour charge time - MicroClimate markets this as the first NIOSH-approved respirator to use USB-C charging. It's a genuine option as PAPR for beards no fit test, since facial hair does not compromise its loose-fitting, positive-pressure design. See our MicroClimate Air3 vs traditional PAPR comparison below, and check our what is a PAPR guide for background.

What It Is Built For

How It Compares

Compared to traditional belt-mounted PAPR systems like the Allegro EZ-Air Max PAPR 9936 or Optrel e3000X with e684 helmet, the Air3 is a more compact, self-contained unit with onboard batteries and USB-C charging rather than a separate belt blower and hose. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MicroClimate Air3 NIOSH approved?

Yes. It's NIOSH-approved under TC-21C-1374 as a loose-fitting powered air purifying respirator (PAPR).

Do I need a fit test to use the Air3?

No. As a NIOSH-approved loose-fitting PAPR, the Air3 does not require the fit testing that tight-fitting respirators need, since the powered blower maintains positive pressure inside the respirator rather than depending on a facial seal.

Can I wear this with a beard?

Yes. Because the Air3 is a loose-fitting, positive-pressure PAPR rather than a tight-sealing respirator, facial hair does not compromise its protection the way it would with a seal-dependent respirator.

How long does the battery last?

MicroClimate rates the battery (3.7V, 13.2Ah, 49Whr) for over 8 hours of runtime, with a 3.5-hour charge time using a USB-C connection - MicroClimate markets this as the first NIOSH-approved respirator to use USB-C charging.

What is the Assigned Protection Factor (APF)?

As a loose-fitting PAPR, it carries the standard OSHA-assigned APF of 25, unless a higher APF is separately demonstrated for a specific configuration, which was not confirmed for this listing.

What is the visor made of?

A 2.1mm optical-grade polycarbonate visor rated to ANSI Z87+ for high-velocity impact protection.

What head sizes does it fit?

MicroClimate states a head size range of 20.5 to 25.5 inches (52 to 64.5 cm). Measure your head circumference and compare it against this range before ordering.

How loud is the blower?

MicroClimate states a 70 dB sound level for the Air3's blower, and an initial airflow setting of 7 ft3/min (200 l/min).

Does it protect against gases or vapors?

This listing does not confirm gas or vapor cartridge protection. Confirm the exact filter type and its rated hazards with MicroClimate before relying on it for anything beyond the particulate protection typical of this PAPR category. See our respirator filter types explained guide for how particulate filters differ from gas/vapor cartridges.

How much does the unit weigh?

MicroClimate states a weight of 3.17 lb (1.44 kg) for the Air3 unit.

How is this different from a traditional PAPR?

Traditional industrial PAPRs often use a separate belt-mounted blower connected by a hose to a hood or helmet. The Air3 is a more compact, self-contained design with onboard batteries and USB-C charging, positioned as a lighter, simpler alternative for tasks like woodworking, powder coating, and general dust/particulate work. See our best PAPR hoods and headtops guide for how different form factors compare.

Do I need training to use this PAPR safely?

Yes. Powered air-purifying respirators are used within a written respiratory protection program under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, including training and maintenance, even for NIOSH-approved loose-fitting units that don't require fit testing. See our what is NIOSH guide for background on the approval process.

Premium feel, but not worth the high price for most
The MicroClimate Air 3 is a sleek, powered respirator with a futuristic look and user-friendly design. It’s easy to operate, simple to clean, and provides clear visibility with active airflow to keep you cool and fog-free.However, the price is extremely high for what it offers. While it does provide full-face protection, for most people, a quality face mask and safety glasses will get the job done at a fraction of the cost. One frustrating design flaw is the veil or neck protector β€” it disconnects from the helmet too easily, which makes removing and putting the unit on feel delicate and awkward. You have to be careful not to tug or shift too much, or it pops off.If you have money to spend on comfort and style, it’s a cool product. But for practical protection, there are far more cost-effective options.Q&A:Q: Is the MicroClimate Air 3 worth the price?A: Not for most users. It's sleek and comfortable but offers limited added protection over basic PPE.Q: Is the helmet easy to use and clean?A: Yes β€” very easy to clean and operate. The controls and design are straightforward.Q: Does the neck shroud stay attached well?A: No β€” the neck veil detaches easily and makes handling the helmet a bit tricky when removing or storing.

Great Product!
I’ve been using the Microclimate helmet and find it extremely useful. I really like its authentic, futuristic lookβ€”it definitely stands out in a good way and have gotten lots of compliments from it. The build feels solid and well-made. In my opinion, it’s worth the price - specially if you work in environments with a lot of dust or airborne particles. One of my favorite features is that the screen never fogs up, which makes it much more comfortable and practical to wear for long periods.
