KLEENGUARD 18629-OB OB V90 “The Shield" Safety Goggles with Face Face Shield Review

The KLEENGUARD 18629-OB is an ANSI Z87.1-compliant chemical splash face shield designed for chemical handling, laboratory, and liquid splash environments. Constructed from impact-resistant polycarbonate, it provides full-face coverage from brow to below the chin line — protecting the face, cheeks, and jaw from hazards that safety glasses and goggles cannot address alone. It is designed for use with compatible face shield headgear assemblies. The KleenGuard V90 Shield meets ANSI Z87.1+ standard for impact protection and the polycarbonate lenses provide 99.9% UVA / UVB / UVC protection.

Construction and Materials

The lens window is constructed from injection-molded polycarbonate — a thermoplastic known for high impact resistance (rated superior to acetate or propionate in ANSI Z87.1 high-impact testing), optical clarity, and resistance to surface crazing under UV exposure. Anti-fog coating is applied to the interior lens surface, reducing condensation buildup during temperature transitions and sustained physical work. This listing is a replacement lens window compatible with standard face shield headgear frames. Replacement lenses allow continued use of existing headgear assemblies without replacing the full unit when the lens becomes scratched or degraded. The Shield has a D3 rating for droplet and splash protection. The lens window extends coverage across the full frontal face profile, with side flanges or curved geometry providing lateral protection beyond the direct forward field. The construction meets or exceeds ANSI Z87.1 high-velocity impact requirements.

Compliance and Ratings

Rated to ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA 1910.133 for chemical splash and liquid hazard environments. ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 is the governing standard for eye and face protective devices in U.S. workplaces; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 mandates its use in workplace environments where eye or face hazards exist. For compliance programs, face shields should be used as part of a layered eye and face protection strategy per OSHA PPE hierarchy requirements. The Shield features the Monogoggle XTR goggles, so there is no need to wear primary eye protection, like with other face shields; Replacement lens (for goggle portion) are available for order.

Performance

In chemical handling environments, full-face coverage extends protection below the chin line and to the peripheral face area — coverage that safety glasses and goggles alone do not provide. Face shields used with chemical hazards should be worn over appropriate eye protection (goggles or safety glasses) per OSHA guidelines, not as standalone protection. The clear anti-fog lens helps workers see clearly, even in humid or wet environments. The anti-fog treatment on the interior lens surface maintains clear vision during transitions from cold to warm environments or during sustained exertion that generates facial moisture.

Strengths

  • Polycarbonate lens provides ANSI Z87.1 impact-rated protection for chemical splash applications
  • Anti-fog lens coating reduces visibility degradation during active work in warm or humid environments
  • Compatible with standard face shield headgear assemblies for flexible deployment
  • Adjustable headgear fits most adult head sizes for crew-level deployment
  • Full-face coverage from brow to below the chin protects areas not covered by eyewear alone
  • Single-unit design simplifies inventory and procurement

Limitations

  • Face shields do not provide complete eye protection as standalone devices against chemical splash or fine particle hazards — OSHA 1910.133 requires appropriate safety glasses or safety goggles underneath the face shield in chemical and grinding environments
  • Lens scratching from abrasive contact degrades optical clarity over time; replacement lenses should be sourced when transmission quality decreases
  • One-size-fits-most headgear may not accommodate all head sizes or hard hat combinations; verify compatibility with the helmet platform before crew-scale procurement

Recommended Use Cases

Chemical mixing and transfer operations; laboratory handling of acids, caustics, and solvents; pharmaceutical manufacturing; janitorial and cleaning with caustic products; paint spray operations. This face shield is appropriate for any OSHA-regulated workplace where face and eye hazard assessments document a risk requiring face shield-level protection.

Verdict

The KLEENGUARD 18629-OB face shield delivers ANSI Z87.1-compliant protection for chemical splash applications in a polycarbonate construction suited for industrial and occupational environments. Buyers should confirm the specific model matches their headgear platform and application requirements before crew-scale procurement. Excellent goggles which are comfortable and include a safety shield. The shield can be removed following the instructions below
This safety shield is the best protection I have found for working in a machine shop where both wood and metal are being cut or machined. My glasses fit easily inside the goggles and what makes this combination shield so excellent is the design of the face shield. Unlike the ones I have used before, when you breath out, no fogging of the safety goggles occurs. At first I thought this was associated with the antifog coating, but I now believe it is due to closed design of the goggles coupled with the airflow design of the shield. When you breath out, all the air is forced down towards your feet. The goggles have a very clear window with no distortion. Putting the goggles on over glasses is easy, but I suspect if you have rally large lenses, it might not work. But thick lenses are no problem- mine are quite thick. Some reviewers have commented that it is nearly impossible to remove the shield from the goggles. It took me quite some time to figure out how to do this, as there are no directions included with the V90 to explain how to do this. I provide instructions below:First, notice that the shield is not flexible and is attached at the top edges by a very small plastic extension that fits into a hole in the goggles. Because the shield is not flexible, you need to do all your shape manipulation on the goggles while holding the shield motionless..1. With your left hand holding the edge of the goggles and your right hand holding the upper corner of the shield peal the flexible goggles away from the shield so that the plastic extension is released from its hole.2. Carefully remove the center piece from the lip on the from of the goggles.3. Carefully remove the plastic extension from the other side of the goggles without applying too much torque. What makes this tricky is that the plastic edge pins are easily broken off, so apply torque to them is dangerous. My guess is that the manufacturer did not intend for the user to ever remove the shield. But I have with a bit of practice learned to remove and replace it easily. It is simply a matter of doing it slowly and carefully the first time. I attach two pictures of the removed shield. The attachment pins are on the far left and right of the shield, and a closeup of the pin is provided in the second picture.Despite the lack of instructions, these are high quality goggles with a very comfortable safety shield attached. You can use them for two hours before they start to annoy you, which is for me true for goggles without a safety shield. Normal sized glasses fit comfortably inside the goggles which is very nice. These make working in a machine shop much, much safer.

How could they make goggles so uncomfortable?
In general, I prefer full face protection whenever I am using power tools, especially metalworking. My favorite is Uvex Bionic Face Shield with Clear Polycarbonate Visor and Anti-fog Hard Coat, because it protects down below the chin. Conventional face masks have a nasty habit of allowing debris to bounce off of your work bench or chest, coming up underneath them onto your face. Still, it looked like these Jackson V90 goggles might be a good compromise in situations where you need full eye protection, but some additional shielding from the debris field would be good. You would not want to use these in a situation where fine particles such as metal chips could fly up under the mask. But that is all moot as these seem to be designed for someone without a nose. The frame and a lower protective portion of the mask are very strong and therefore not very flexible. The portion that fits around your forehead and cheekbones has some flex to it so it can form a seal. Unfortunately this area is not substantial enough to make up for the rigidness of the body. In order to get it to seal I have to set the strap extremely tight. And I have a decent size head - I wear a 7 1/2 hat. But what's worse, and totally unacceptable, is where it sits on the bridge of the nose. This area has virtually no flexibility at all -there is basically no place for your nose to go. I do not have a huge nose, but in order for these goggles to fit my nose they have to ride extremely high, practically hitting my lower eyelids. Wearing them any lower puts significant pressure on the bridge of my nose.Just to prove I'm not crazy, I gave a set to a friend with a perfectly normal face to try on. I did not prompt him at all with my opinion. He gave them back, saying "after 10 minutes my nose hurt".I bought a lot of goggles over the years and I never knew this could even be an issue. Strange.
