Can this face shield be worn on its own?
No. Under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 a face shield is a SECONDARY protector: it is worn over primary eye protection, not instead of it. Spectacles or goggles go on first; the shield adds face and splash coverage on top.
What does a face shield protect that safety glasses do not?
The rest of the face - cheeks, jaw and the area below the eye - plus the approach path for splash and flying debris. It does not seal, so it is not a substitute for goggles where a chemical splash hazard exists.
What is the difference between Z87 and Z87+?
Z87 is the basic impact rating; Z87+ adds the high-velocity impact test, in which a quarter-inch steel ball is fired at the lens. If the work involves grinding, chipping, nailing or anything that throws fragments, Z87+ is the one to look for.
Do the markings tell me anything besides impact?
Yes. Z87.1 marks the hazard each device was tested against: D3 splash, D4 dust, D5 fine dust, U for UV with a scale number, L for visible light filtering, W for welding with a shade number, and V for photochromic. A device carries only the letters it was tested for.
How much does an anti-fog coating matter?
More than most buyers expect: fogged eyewear gets pushed up onto the forehead, and eye protection on the forehead protects nothing. What is the lens tint for and where should it not be used?
Tint controls glare and light, not impact. A grey or smoke lens is for bright outdoor work, amber lifts contrast in low light, and indoor/outdoor is a light mirror for people moving between the two. A tinted lens should not be worn for close indoor work where it costs you detail.
Does OSHA require eye protection for my task?
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 requires eye and face protection wherever there is a reasonable probability of injury from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids, caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapours, or injurious light. The employer's hazard assessment decides; the standard describes the exposure.
How do I stop them slipping or leaving pressure points?
Adjust the temple length and the pantoscopic tilt before blaming the frame, and match the frame size to the face rather than buying one size for a whole crew. Eyewear that hurts comes off, and eyewear that is off is not protection.
How should the lens be cleaned without ruining it?
Rinse grit off first, then use a lens-safe cleaner and a soft cloth. Dry-wiping a dusty lens grinds the dust into the coating, and solvents, alcohol wipes and paper towels strip anti-fog and anti-scratch layers.
When should eye protection be replaced?
