Guardian Fall Protection 1704 Velocity Economy Full Body Harness, XL/2XL Overview

The Guardian Fall Protection 1704 Velocity Economy Full Body Harness in XL/2XL is a budget-tier full body harness for workers who need OSHA-compliant fall arrest without paying for premium comfort padding or specialty hardware. It uses a single dorsal (back) D-ring as the fall-arrest connection point, which is the standard configuration for general construction, roofing, and maintenance work covered under fall protection requirements.

A harness is one component of a complete personal fall arrest system. Under OSHA 1926.502 and ANSI Z359, the harness must connect to a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self retracting lifeline, which in turn ties to an anchorage capable of supporting 5,000 lb per worker (or a system engineered to a 2:1 safety factor under a qualified person). The 1704 covers the harness leg of that system; you supply the connecting device and anchor.

The dorsal D-ring keeps the worker upright and head-up during a fall and routes arrest forces through the strongest part of the body. The XL/2XL sizing serves larger builds; always verify your chest, waist, and thigh dimensions against the manufacturer's size chart, because a harness that does not fit snugly will not perform as designed. Browse the full range of full body harnesses if a different size or a model with hip positioning D-rings suits your task better.

Retire after a fall. Any harness that has arrested a fall, or that shows cut webbing, deformed hardware, or chemical or heat damage, must be permanently removed from service. Fall-arrest webbing is single-use protection once loaded. Inspect before every shift and document per your competent-person program.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
General construction and maintenance fall arrest Strong fit Single dorsal D-ring is the standard connection for tie-off to a shock-absorbing lanyard or SRL on roofing, framing, and maintenance jobs.
Larger-frame workers (XL/2XL) Strong fit Sized for bigger builds; confirm chest, waist, and thigh measurements against Guardian's chart for a snug, head-up fit.
Budget-conscious fleet or crew outfitting Strong fit Economy tier covers the OSHA full-body-harness requirement at lower cost when premium padding is not needed.
Hip-positioning or rebar/tower work Not suitable This harness has only a dorsal D-ring. Choose a model with side positioning D-rings from the full body harnesses range for positioning tasks.
Arc flash or hot-work environments Not suitable Standard webbing is not rated for arc flash. Select a purpose-built arc-rated harness for electrical hot work.
After a fall has been arrested Retire immediately Permanently remove from service after any fall event or visible damage; fall-arrest webbing is single-use once loaded.

Fall protection is life-safety equipment. A personal fall arrest system must limit free fall and arrest forces under OSHA 1926.502 / 1910.140 and ANSI Z359: use a full-body harness (never a body belt for fall arrest) with a compatible shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline and an anchorage rated 5,000 lb per worker (or engineered to a 2:1 safety factor). Inspect every component before each use, immediately retire anything that has arrested a fall or shows damage, and work to a documented rescue plan. Browse fall protection and full-body harnesses.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Single dorsal D-ring meets the OSHA full-body-harness requirement for general fall arrest
  • Economy pricing for outfitting crews or spare/backup harnesses
  • XL/2XL sizing accommodates larger-frame workers
  • Pass-through buckle design keeps donning simple
  • Connects to any compatible shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline
  • Dorsal connection keeps the worker upright and head-up during arrest
Cons
  • Dorsal D-ring only, no side positioning D-rings for rebar or tower work
  • Economy padding is lighter than premium vest-style harnesses for all-day wear
  • Not arc-rated; unsuitable for electrical hot work
  • Harness alone is not a complete system; lanyard or SRL and a 5,000 lb anchor sold separately
  • Must be retired after any fall or visible damage

How It Compares

The 1704 Velocity Economy sits at the entry tier of Guardian's harness line. Compare it against Guardian's higher-spec siblings and other full body harnesses before deciding:

Model Tier Size shown D-ring setup Best for
Guardian 1704 Velocity Economy (this page) Economy XL/2XL Single dorsal General fall arrest on a budget
Guardian 37102 Series 3 Standard X-Large/2X-Large Per model spec Step-up comfort and features in the same size range
Guardian 37101 Series 3 Standard Medium/Large Per model spec Standard-tier harness for mid-size workers
Guardian 37100 Series 3 Standard X-Small/Small Per model spec Standard-tier harness for smaller frames

All four are general-purpose fall-arrest harnesses. The 1704 trades padding and extra hardware for a lower price; the Series 3 models add comfort and feature upgrades. Whichever you choose, pair it with a shock-absorbing lanyard or self retracting lifeline to complete the fall protection system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size worker does the Guardian 1704 XL/2XL harness fit?

This model is the XL/2XL size, intended for larger-frame workers. Always measure your chest, waist, and thigh and check them against Guardian's size chart before buying. A harness must fit snugly to perform during a fall, so do not size up or down by guess.

Does the 1704 Velocity harness have a back D-ring for fall arrest?

Yes. The 1704 uses a single dorsal (back) D-ring, which is the standard fall-arrest connection point. You attach a shock-absorbing lanyard or self-retracting lifeline to this dorsal ring so that arrest forces keep you upright and head-up. Browse compatible options under self retracting lifelines and lanyards.

Is this harness a complete fall protection system?

No. A harness is one of three parts of a personal fall arrest system. You also need a shock-absorbing lanyard or a self retracting lifeline as the connecting device, plus an anchorage rated for 5,000 lb per worker. The 1704 covers the harness; the rest of the fall protection system is sold separately.

Can I use a body belt instead of this full body harness?

No. OSHA 1926.502 prohibits body belts for fall arrest. A full body harness is required because it distributes arrest forces across the shoulders, thighs, and pelvis rather than the waist. The 1704 is a full body harness and meets that requirement; a belt does not.

What anchorage does this harness require?

Under OSHA, the anchorage for fall arrest must support at least 5,000 lb per attached worker, or be part of a system designed and installed under a qualified person with a 2:1 safety factor. The harness itself does not change that requirement; you must verify your anchor independently.

Does the 1704 have side positioning D-rings?

No. This economy model has a dorsal D-ring only. If you need hip (side) D-rings for work positioning on rebar, towers, or scaffolds, choose a positioning harness from the full body harnesses range instead. Side D-rings are for positioning, not fall arrest.

When do I have to retire this harness?

Permanently remove it from service after it arrests any fall, or whenever you find cut or frayed webbing, deformed or corroded hardware, or chemical or heat damage. Fall-arrest webbing is single-use protection once it has been loaded in a fall. Inspect before every shift.

Is the Velocity Economy harness arc-rated?

The title does not list an arc rating, so treat it as a standard fall-arrest harness, not an arc-rated one. For electrical hot work or arc-flash exposure, select a purpose-built arc-rated harness rather than this economy model.

What lanyard should I pair with the 1704?

Pair it with a shock-absorbing lanyard sized to your fall clearance, or a self-retracting lifeline for shorter free-fall and faster lock-up. Both connect to the dorsal D-ring. Browse the lanyards and self retracting lifelines collections to match your work height and clearance.

Why choose the economy 1704 over a Series 3 harness?

The 1704 is the budget pick when you need OSHA-compliant fall arrest without premium padding or extra hardware, such as outfitting a crew or keeping spare harnesses on hand. Guardian's Series 3 models add comfort and features at a higher price. Compare them in the full body harnesses collection.

How do I inspect this harness before use?

Before every use, run the webbing through your hands to check for cuts, fraying, burns, or chemical staining; flex the dorsal D-ring and buckles for cracks, corrosion, or distortion; and confirm all stitching is intact. If anything fails inspection, remove the harness from service. Document inspections per your competent-person program.

Safety and Security is Top Priority
We do a lot of roof accessing at our job and wanted to ensure the team felt secure and tethered. This fit the bill. High quality craftmanship gives us the confidence to do our job without worry.

Good for occasional use......
I bought a pair of these recently for working on a roof with a 1 in 4 pitch, with another colleague. They are NOT industrial grade, by which I mean that if you are a professional roofing contractor - they are probably not for you. They are at the economy end of the spectrum. Once you work out how to put them on, and cinch the straps, and attach the safety lines, they seem to fit OK (first time you do this allow 20-30 mins to get into the harness). I cannot comment on how effective they are, since I did not fall off the roof - which was a one-off job for me. But they certainly felt robust enough to have projected me from a fall, if i had slipped, and I felt secure that they would have done their job OK.

Good protection for the price paid
I'm afraid of heights. I need some safety harness when I work on 2nd story house. This Guardian 1703 harness fits me nicely. It's still a bit loose since I'm a smaller guy but still secure enough to not slip off me. I've tested its restraining power on the ground and yes it will jerk you back when the line ends. I expected the harness to bruise me but it didn't. It's protection that you really don't want to do without.

The Gold Standard for a Commercial Company Harness
We are a commercial company that uses this product as the standard harness we issue to each of our employees who are working at heights. This is an economy harness, as described. It is not terribly comfortable or uncomfortable, nor is it really easy to use for people who are not accustomed to it, but in my opinion this harness is the gold standard for a commercial company to use. Once properly instructed, our guys are able to put this harness on in less than 2 minutes each day. For someone who is just putting one on for the first time it will take an extra 3-5 minutes to adjust the fit properly. We have had workers experience falls in this harness and it saved them from injury.

Made for arresting falls with an elastic lanyard attached to the back (lanyard not included) exclusively.
This product seems well made and sturdy but I was somewhat disappointed in the limited applicability. The product is specifically designed to attach to an elastic safety lanyard on the back of the harness to arrest falls, e.g. prevent roofers from falling to the ground. I wanted to use it to allow me to climb a ladder and then attach the front of the harness to the ladder so I could lean back some and free both hands to do work up on the ladder. Unfortunately, there is no attachment point on the front of the harness, e.g. a "D" ring, to easily use the harness this way. I had to kluge up a rope tied to the chest strap and then to the ladder for the intended use. Seems to me a harness that would attach to safety on either the front or the back would be more generally useful.

Perfect and price is great
One review said that the leg straps run a bit small. That was true, I'm 5'9 185lbs and I had to use the last hole to use it. Works great - glad that I have had to fully test it.

well made though was a bit big for me
I got a small, but it's still on the big side even when fully adjusted - I'm 5'9 30" waist 130#. Though it still holds tight enough to be effective and comfortable enough. Nicely made and easy to wear, I only used it once or twice for some roofing / high ladder projects I needed to do.

Great product, very safe, comfortable and great price.
Using this for work around the house, in trees etc. Absolutely great quality with an amazing prize. I feel very safe with this, and it seems to be great for every size (I'm 6'4 and not really skinny)

Tall guys/gals beware
First, it's well designed... 5-star worthy. The clasps and buckles are great so it's easy to get in and out. HUGE downside-- it more on the small side of "small/large". I'm 6'4" tall and 225 lbs-- which is just shy of too big. I had the legs loops fully extended, not because my legs were too big, but because I was too tall. You can't extend the height. Therefore, where the leg loops straps attach to the back strap was so high up my back that the leg buckles were in positioned at my waist instead of my thighs. I had to extend the leg loops to the max in order to get them to stretch far enough down and around my thighs to buckle. As well, because it runs short, the lanyard attach ring was so high up my back that I needed to be a contortionist to hook/unhook the lanyard while wearing the harness. Therefore, I had to take the harness off to hook up/unhook. I made it work, but it was ugly. To call this "small to LARGE" is an over statement.

Good product, but beware of torso length it will accomodate.
We bought 2 of these primarily due to the Guardian name, and the cost. S-L doesn't tell you much regarding the size of person it will fit. One of the guys was 5' 6" and it worked fine. I'm about 5' 10" and found it getting short in torso length. Our fall protection worked well, so we ordered more; but since I had 2 S-L, I got 2 XL-XXL since most of the guys are my height or more.
