An air-purifying respirator filters air; it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no filtering facepiece may be used in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no particulate rating changes that.
Short answer: the Gerson 1845 R95 is a NIOSH-approved R95 filtering facepiece - 95% efficiency against 0.3 micron particles, resistant to oil aerosols. Buy it when the exposure is particulate and the fit can be verified; skip it when gases or vapours are in play, because a particulate filter does nothing about them.
Who the Gerson 1845 R95 suits
Shoppers reach this listing under several descriptions - as a r95 respirator, as a niosh r95 approval, as a disposable r95, or as a r95 filtering facepiece - and they all mean the same certified device. It suits particulate exposures where the wearer can be fit tested and kept clean-shaven at the seal, and it does not suit gases, vapours, or any job needing more than a factor of ten.
Reading the R95 rating
Under 42 CFR 84 the letter and the number answer different questions. The letter is oil resistance: N not resistant, R resistant for a single shift, P oil proof. The number is filter efficiency against the most-penetrating 0.3 micron particle size: 95, 99, or 100 meaning 99.97%. This model is R95, so resistant to oil aerosols at 95% efficiency.
R-series service limit. An R-rated filter is certified for a single eight-hour shift when oil aerosols are present. That is a regulatory limit on the filter, not a comfort guideline, and it is the main reason to choose P over R where oil mist is routine rather than occasional.
What the exhalation valve does and does not do. It lowers breathing resistance and heat build-up on exhale, which matters over a long shift. It does not increase the protection you receive, and it provides no source control - a valved respirator vents the wearer's unfiltered breath, so it is the wrong choice where the point is to protect other people or a sterile field.
Efficiency versus protection factor
A 99.97% filter sounds decisively better than a 95% one, and for the media it is. For the wearer it is not: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 Table 1 assigns every filtering facepiece a protection factor of 10 regardless, because what leaks past the seal dominates what passes through the filter. Needing better than 10 means changing class of respirator, not class of filter.
Buy it if / skip it if
Buy it if the hazard is particulate, the wearer is clean-shaven at the sealing surface, and a fit test under 1910.134(f) has been done or can be. Skip it if the atmosphere contains gases or vapours, if the wearer has facial hair crossing the seal, or if the job needs a protection factor above 10. Methodology: how this listing was built
Class, efficiency and oil resistance are read from the manufacturer's designation and the 42 CFR 84 scheme rather than from marketing copy, and the protection factor is taken from the OSHA table rather than inferred from the filter rating. No laboratory testing is performed for this page.
Without a fit test the rating is theoretical
A respirator that has never been fit tested is a comfort item. 1910.134(f) makes the test mandatory before first use and every year thereafter, tied to the specific size and model - a different size is a different respirator as far as the seal is concerned. The quick check at each donning, under Appendix B-1, is a separate obligation and catches the day-to-day failures the annual test cannot.
Knowing when it is spent
Most disposables are retired for mechanical reasons rather than filter reasons: slack straps, a crushed nose piece, a soiled or damp facepiece, or simply failing the seal check that morning. Rising breathing effort is the filter-loading signal. None of these are fixable - washing destroys the media and stretched straps never recover their tension.

The valve is a comfort feature, not a protection feature
An exhalation valve vents warm, humid breath straight out instead of pushing it back through the filter media. Over a full shift that is a real difference to heat build-up and to fogging if safety glasses are worn, and it is the main reason people tolerate a respirator for hours rather than minutes. What it does not do is raise the protection factor by even a fraction - and because the valve vents unfiltered, it offers no source control at all. In any setting where the point is to protect other people, or a clean process, the valved version is the wrong one.
Nuisance relief is not a chemical filter
This model adds nuisance-level relief for organic vapour or acid gas, and the wording matters more than it looks. Nuisance level means below the permissible exposure limit - the carbon layer is there to take the smell out of air that is already within limits. It carries no NIOSH gas or vapour approval, has no service life you can calculate, and gives no warning when it is spent. If a vapour is present at or above its exposure limit, this is the wrong device and the answer is a cartridge respirator with the correct approval.
What the face seal gasket adds
A soft gasket at the sealing surface is aimed at the commonest cause of lost protection: an imperfect seal on a face the facepiece was not shaped for. It gives a little more tolerance across face shapes and it usually improves comfort at the bridge of the nose. It does not remove the need for a fit test, and it does not help at all where facial hair crosses the seal - no gasket seals against stubble.
Buying in a 5-unit pack
This listing is a 5-unit pack, which matters more than it sounds for a disposable: these are consumed per wearer per shift, so pack size sets how often reordering interrupts the job and whether every worker has a fresh one available at the start of a shift rather than re-using yesterday's. Size the order against headcount and shift pattern, not against unit price.
