First Alert AF400 EZ Fire Spray β€” 18 oz Aerosol Fire Extinguisher Spray Overview

The First Alert AF400 EZ Fire Spray is an 18 oz aerosol fire extinguisher built for the moments when a traditional cylinder is overkill or too slow to deploy β€” a grease flare-up on the stovetop, a sparking outlet, a smoldering wastebasket. Instead of pulling a pin and squeezing a handle, you press the top of the can and direct a wide aerosol spray at the base of the flame. That spray pattern is broader and more forgiving than a metal discharge horn, which is why First Alert positions the AF400 as the grab-and-go can for households where anyone might be the first to reach the fire.

The AF400 uses a sodium-bicarbonate-based agent and is formulated for the small fires that actually start in homes: cooking oil and grease, electrical, fabric, and paper. The residue is non-toxic, biodegradable, and wipes off countertops, cabinets and appliances with a damp cloth β€” a meaningful difference from the yellow ABC dry-chemical powder that coats a kitchen after a conventional discharge. Because it is a sealed aerosol can, the AF400 is single-use and disposable rather than rechargeable; once discharged or past its date, you replace the can.

Treat the AF400 as a first line of defense, not your only one. It is a supplement that lives next to the range or in a pantry drawer, ready in seconds, while a rechargeable extinguisher handles larger or spreading fires. For balanced coverage, most homes pair this spray with a UL-listed ABC dry chemical extinguisher for living areas and garages. Browse the full range of fire extinguishers to build a layered plan, and if you are mapping protection room by room, our best fire extinguisher for home guide explains where each type belongs. What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Stovetop grease or cooking-oil flare-up Excellent The AF400's sodium-bicarbonate spray and wide pattern are made for kitchen-range fires; keep one within arm's reach of the cooktop. See more options in kitchen k class extinguishers.
Small electrical fire (outlet, appliance cord) Excellent Rated for electrical fires; the non-conductive agent and aimable spray let you hit the source without spreading powder everywhere.
Fabric, paper or wastebasket fire Excellent Designed for paper and fabric; the easy-wipe biodegradable residue makes cleanup of soft furnishings far simpler than dry chemical.
Living room, garage or whole-home primary protection Limited An 18 oz aerosol is a supplement, not a primary unit. Add a UL-listed rechargeable extinguisher for larger areas.
Commercial kitchen or NFPA 10 code compliance Not suitable The AF400 is a household aid, not a code-rated portable extinguisher. Commercial kitchens need a serviced K-class system from kitchen k class extinguishers.
Vehicle, boat or RV Good Compact and easy to stow, but verify mounting for your application; a dedicated, secured extinguisher from fire extinguishers is preferred for vehicles.

Match the extinguisher to the fire class: A (ordinary combustibles), B (flammable liquids), C (energized electrical), K (cooking oils and fats). A multipurpose ABC dry-chemical extinguisher covers A, B and C. Mount it where it is accessible, check the pressure gauge monthly, and service or replace it per NFPA 10. An extinguisher is for small, incipient fires only β€” if the fire grows or the room fills with smoke, evacuate and call 911. Browse fire extinguishers.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Press-top aerosol design deploys in seconds β€” no pin to pull or handle to squeeze
  • Wide spray pattern is easier to aim than a traditional extinguisher horn
  • Targets the real household risks: kitchen grease, electrical, fabric and paper fires
  • Biodegradable, non-toxic agent wipes away with a damp cloth β€” no caked dry-chemical mess
  • Compact 18 oz can fits in a kitchen drawer or beside the range for instant access
Cons
  • Single-use and disposable β€” cannot be recharged after discharge
  • Aerosol can holds far less agent than a 2.5–5 lb cylinder; not for large or spreading fires
  • A supplement, not a UL-listed NFPA 10 portable extinguisher; pair with a rechargeable unit
  • Has a finite shelf life and must be replaced periodically

How It Compares

How the AF400 EZ Fire Spray compares to its First Alert siblings carried at WC Safety:

AF400 EZ Fire Spray 2-Pack Two 18 oz aerosol cans No (single-use) One for the kitchen, one for a second room

First Alert HOME2PRO Dry-chemical cylinder, 2-A:10-B:C Yes Larger primary unit for living areas / garage

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the First Alert AF400 EZ Fire Spray?

It is an 18 oz aerosol fire extinguisher. Instead of a pin and squeeze handle, you press the top of the can to release a wide spray of a sodium-bicarbonate-based agent at small household fires. See related options in fire extinguishers.

What kinds of fires is the AF400 rated for?

First Alert designs the AF400 for small home fires involving cooking grease and oil, electrical, fabric and paper. It is not a UL-numbered A:B:C extinguisher; for code-rated coverage use an ABC dry chemical extinguisher as well.

Is the AF400 a replacement for a regular fire extinguisher?

No. It is a fast-grab supplement, not a UL-listed NFPA 10 portable extinguisher. Keep a rechargeable extinguisher as your primary unit and use the AF400 for quick response to small fires.

Is the EZ Fire Spray rechargeable?

No. It is a sealed, single-use aerosol can. Once discharged or past its date, you replace it rather than refill it. If you want a refillable unit, see rechargeable extinguishers.

How much agent does the 18 oz can hold?

The AF400 holds 18 oz of agent β€” far less than a 2.5 to 5 lb cylinder. That is plenty for a stovetop flare-up or wastebasket fire, but not for large or spreading fires, where you need a full ABC dry chemical extinguisher.

Can I use the AF400 on a grease fire?

Yes β€” kitchen grease and cooking-oil fires are a primary use. Never use water on a grease fire. Aim the spray at the base of the flame. For a dedicated kitchen plan, browse kitchen k class extinguishers.

Is it safe to use on an electrical fire?

Yes, the AF400 is intended for small electrical fires such as an outlet or appliance cord. Unplug the source if you can do so safely, then spray. For larger electrical risks, keep an ABC dry chemical extinguisher nearby.

How hard is it to clean up after using it?

Cleanup is easy. The agent is non-toxic and biodegradable and wipes off counters, cabinets and appliances with a damp cloth β€” unlike the caked yellow powder a dry-chemical discharge leaves behind.

Where should I store the AF400?

Keep it within arm's reach of the stove β€” a drawer or a clip near the range works well. For other rooms, mount a primary unit; see placement tips in our best fire extinguisher for home guide.

Should I buy one can or the 2-pack?

Buy a single can to cover the kitchen; choose the AF400 2-Pack if you also want one in a second area such as a laundry room or near a fireplace. Either way, add a rechargeable cylinder from fire extinguishers as your primary.

Does the AF400 expire?

Yes β€” like any aerosol extinguisher it has a finite shelf life. Check the can periodically and replace it when it reaches its date or after any discharge. Compare long-life options in best fire extinguishers 2026.

Can I use it in a car, boat or RV?

Its compact size makes it easy to stow, but for vehicles a securely mounted extinguisher is preferable. If you are new to ratings and choosing the right type, read fire extinguisher classes explained first.

Quick, Compact, and Surprisingly Effective – A Must-Have for Home Safety
I bought the First Alert EZ Fire Spray after reading about its easy-to-use design, and I’m really glad I did. It’s compact enough to keep in my kitchen cabinet or garage without taking up much space, yet powerful enough that I feel confident it could handle small fires if they ever happen.

Peace of mind
I've not had to use this thankfully, but it's nice to have in the kitchen for safety should there be an emergency. It's small and fits in the cabinet next to the stove, no mounting necessary. Worth the price for peace of mind!

Fresh Amazon stock
I originally bought this product a few years ago an they have now expired as per the date printed on the can. I recently purchased a new one from the "orange box store" and I was hesitant to purchase this item from amazon due the fact that it expires. I was worried that I would get some old stock. Anyway I decided to order one and I am happy to say that it is fresh stock as the expire date is 11/16/2017.

Perfect option for my teardrop trailer
Haven't had to actually use this yet, but I feel better just having one in our teardrop trailer. Much easier to store than an old school fire extinguisher. If I ever actually use this I'll let you know how well it works.
