ESAB Sentinel A60 Welding Helmet Overview

The ESAB Sentinel A60 welding helmet is a large-view passive auto-darkening welding helmet, not a powered respirator. It has a 4.65 by 2.80 inch viewing area about 40 percent wider than the Sentinel A50, a variable shade 5-13 with a shade 3 grind and light state, 1/1/1/1 optical clarity, four hyper-acting arc sensors, and ESAB OpTCS broad-spectrum light control.

As the ESAB Sentinel A60, this Sentinel A60 auto-darkening helmet pairs a wide view with fully adjustable Halo headgear, a dual-color LED display, and up to nine ADF memory settings. As an ESAB A60 helmet with a Sentinel A60 large view, it has an external grind control in a low-profile high-impact shell; on ESAB Sentinel A60 vs A50, the A60 adds the wider view and OpTCS.

It protects the eyes and face from the arc but does not protect your lungs; for welding fume, add a respirator. Compare the ESAB Sentinel A50, the entry ESAB Savage A40, and the Lincoln Viking 3350, and browse the range in welding helmets.

What This Helmet Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Stick, TIG, MIG welding Purpose-built Variable shade 5-13; four fast arc sensors.
Widest view in the Sentinel line Strong 4.65 x 2.80 in view; 40% wider than the A50.
Weld-then-grind workflow Strong External grind control and memory settings.
Welding fume protection Add a respirator Wear a respirator or a powered welding respirator.
Oxygen-poor or emergency air Not applicable Not a respirator; use supplied air or an air tank.

Match the protection to the hazard. The Sentinel A60 is eye, face, and head protection: the auto-darkening lens shields your eyes from the arc, but it provides no respiratory protection on its own. Welding fume still reaches your lungs, so pair the helmet with a suitable respirator, or use a powered welding respirator, matched to your exposure. Because the helmet is not a respirator, it has no assigned protection factor and is never a substitute for respiratory protection; oxygen-poor or IDLH atmospheres require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, not a welding helmet. Always set the correct shade for the process, never grind with a welding shade selected, replace scratched cover plates, and follow the ESAB manual and OSHA welding requirements. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ESAB Sentinel A60 welding helmet?

It is a large-view passive auto-darkening welding helmet with a 4.65 by 2.80 inch viewing area, variable shade 5-13, 1/1/1/1 optics, four arc sensors, and Halo headgear. It is a welding helmet, not a powered respirator.

How does the A60 compare to the A50?

The A60 offers about a 40 percent wider viewing area than the Sentinel A50, plus ESAB's OpTCS light control and updated auto-darkening filter. If you want the largest view in the Sentinel line, the A60 is the upgrade over the A50.

What shade range does it cover?

It has a variable shade 5-13 for welding, plus a shade 3 grind and light state, adjustable in half-value digital increments. Set the shade to your process and amperage, and use the grind mode only for grinding.

What is the viewing area?

The auto-darkening filter has a large 4.65 by 2.80 inch (118 x 71 mm) viewing area, which helps on long welds and out-of-position work. Combined with the four arc sensors, it gives a clear, wide view of the weld.

Does it have a grinding mode?

Yes. An external grind control switches the lens between a shade 3 grind mode and welding mode, so you can grind without removing the helmet. Never grind with the lens set to a welding shade, and switch back before you strike an arc.

What is OpTCS technology?

OpTCS is ESAB's broad-spectrum light control technology in the reengineered auto-darkening filter, which aims for a clearer, more natural view of the weld pool. The A60 also has a dual-color LED display for settings in low light.

Can I save settings?

Yes. The A60 stores up to nine programmable ADF memory settings so you can switch quickly between welding profiles for different processes and materials. Set them up once and recall the right profile for each job.

Is this a powered respirator?

No. The Sentinel A60 is an auto-darkening welding helmet, not a PAPR. It protects the eyes and face from the arc but does not filter or supply breathing air. For welding-fume protection you add a respirator separately.

Does it protect against welding fume?

Not on its own. The helmet is eye, face, and head protection; it does not protect your lungs from welding fume. Pair it with a suitable respirator matched to your exposure, or use a powered welding respirator instead.

What headgear does it use?

It uses ESAB's fully adjustable Halo headgear, designed to distribute weight and stay stable and comfortable through long sessions. Adjust the headgear for a secure, balanced fit before use.

How is the lens powered?

The auto-darkening lens uses solar cells with batteries and darkens automatically when the arc strikes. Check the sensors and batteries before each shift, and keep the cover lens clean and free of spatter for a clear view.

How do I maintain it?

Inspect the lens, cover plates, sensors, and headgear before each use, replace scratched cover plates, keep the sensors clean, and store it away from heat and spatter. Follow the ESAB manual for cover-plate and battery part numbers.

Feline pretty good about this hood
Excellent hood, absolutely love the yellow cover lenses. And as far as ascetic, its kinda feline. I couldn't resist. I used some leftover kydex to make cat ears.Honestly im really glad I spent the cash on this hood. Its comfortable, fairly lightweight and the yellow lenses are crystal clear

Heavy
It's a little heavy on the head. And I worry about the head harness breaking. It seems under engineered for the weight of the hood. Visibility is good. Function is good. The harness seems light duty. In confined space and hitting the hood on structure around, it may break. Probably great for guy's welding at a table. But in tight areas better options are available.

Ironworker Approved Awesome HoodπŸ‘Œ
Excellent welding hood, I'm an ironworker doing maintenance/ fab daily in a scrap yard. All position welding MIG AND SMAW Stick. I've had this hood for a little over a month and it gets used and abused.Issues:1: The ratchet system on the head gear feels cheap, but as long as you dont armstrong gorilla grip tighten it to your head youre fine. It's holding up with no issuesπŸ‘Œ2:Lenses do scratch pretty easy but not detrimental to use. Since it has a round face setting it down will/potentially give it small scratches depending on how hard you put it down or what you put it on. One month in heavy use still on first yellow lense. My solution keep the carry bag close set down on the bag if setting face down. Lots of life left in first lense and yes I have done alot of vertical and over head welding with no issues. If someone is, pull your head out of your weld puddle. πŸ€™The good stuff:Top three:1: Light weight oh so nice, flips down smooth, adjust you head band and in out and this thing fits like a glove. The weight centers directly over the top of your head so less neck fatigue. I was so used to linclon, miller, and Jackson flippers I didn't really know this was an issue. But its nice.2: Visuals are crisp excellent dim/clear timing grind setting works great, very nice stiff tactile button have never accidentally grind flashed my self in tight places.3. Great for tight spaces and the in out adjustments are perfect for a respirator, no more under flash from mask hitting respirator. All in all I was skeptical and worried going from viking and digital infinity but always wanted to test drive this hood. I highly recommend this welding hood I will be trying more esab products.

Clear view of work
Amazing welding helmet. Darken with no flash like I would see on my older cheap helmet. Super crisp and clear vision of work. Comfortable head gear that doesn't rip my hair out everything I remove it.

Glad I bought it. My welds are better for it
Great helmet. I traded up from my Miller classic and this makes it so much easier to see your puddle. I don't get the complaints about the grind button on the side of the helmet. Works great for me. The hood is comfortable. I just wish when I flipped it up it would stay up but the lock nuts don't seem to do much even full tight.

Perfect helmet for TIG welding
Great helmet! Light weight, easy to adjust to get a good fit. Auto darkening works perfect, better than some others Ive used. Perfect helmet for TIG welding, which is primarily what I use it for, haven't tried it with MIG or ARC welding but I can't see any reason it work just as well under those conditions. It's pricey compared to others, but as my wife points out, I only have the one set of eyes so protect them.

Good helmet for the price.
This is my new "Daily driver" at work. Great field of vision. Awesome clarity and color. I know this has had some bad reviews, but so far i am very happy with it. I don't seem to bang my head as much in tight spots with this rounder design.
