ergodyne skullerz eyewear lanyards β€” what the listing actually specifies

What to check before you buy

Impact protection and splash protection are different tests. ANSI Z87.1 rates spectacles for impact, but only a device marked for splash (D3) is evaluated against a chemical splash hazard; safety glasses with open sides do not qualify, and a face shield is a secondary protector worn over primary eye protection rather than instead of it.

Lens cleaning method
Dry-wiping with paper towel scratches polycarbonate and strips anti-fog coatings. Lens-safe solution and a microfiber cloth are the difference between a 6-month and a 6-week lens.
Retainers and cords
A retainer keeps eyewear on the wearer rather than in a pocket. It does not make removal acceptable in the hazard zone.
Anti-fog treatments wear off
Applied anti-fog is consumable. Reapplication frequency depends on humidity, exertion and how the lens is cleaned.
Storage
Cases and stations prevent the scratching that makes people discard eyewear early. Loose in a toolbox is the shortest path to a scratched lens.

More from our Eyewear Accessory reviews

Why coatings and retention matter more than they look

The commonest failure of eye protection is not breakage. It is eyewear that has been pushed up onto the forehead, taken off because it fogged, or left in a drawer because it kept sliding. Anything that keeps rated eyewear on the face for the whole task is doing protective work, even though it carries no rating of its own.

ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 recognises this indirectly: it marks a tested anti-fog performance level (N) separately from impact, because fogging is a known cause of removal rather than a comfort complaint.

Coatings are consumable

Anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings are surface treatments with a finite life. Paper towels, solvent wipes, ammonia-based glass cleaner and dry-wiping a dusty lens all strip them, and once stripped they do not come back. Clean with water and a microfibre cloth, or with a wipe the lens manufacturer states is compatible.

A lens that has hazed or crazed has lost optical clarity as well as coating, and Z87.1 rates eyewear on optical quality alongside impact. Scratched eyewear is replaced rather than polished.

Accessories do not change the rating

A lanyard, a case, a cleaning station or a replacement temple does not add to or subtract from the marking on the eyewear itself. The rating belongs to the frame and lens as tested, and modifying that assembly - swapping in a lens the frame was not tested with, for instance - voids the certification the marking represents.

Where prescription wearers are involved the options remain an over-the-glass frame, a goggle rated to fit over glasses, or prescription safety eyewear made to Z87.1. Adding side shields to ordinary prescription glasses does not produce rated eye protection.

The buying criteria for this category are laid out in amber vs clear lens safety glasses, anti fog safety glasses guide, anti fog vs anti scratch safety glasses, best face shields, best face shields for welding grinding and cutting.
