ANSI Z87.1 Polarized UV Protection

The DEWALT DPG99 Polarized safety glasses are the premium-tier outdoor safety glass in the DEWALT lineup, featuring polarized smoke lenses for glare reduction on high-reflectivity outdoor work surfaces. Rated ANSI Z87.1+, they are intended for outdoor construction workers on sites with reflected glare from water, concrete, glass, or polished metal surfaces where standard smoke lenses are insufficient. Available in Polarized Smoke at $25.23.

Construction and Materials

The DPG99 features a polarized polycarbonate lens in a wraparound sporty frame. The polarized filter reduces horizontal glare reflection that standard tinted lenses do not address — glare from wet pavement, standing water, concrete slab pours, and glass curtain wall installations is substantially reduced compared to equivalent non-polarized smoke lenses. Rubber-tipped temples provide non-slip retention. At $25.23, the DPG99 is priced at a premium over DEWALT's standard glasses lineup, reflecting the polarized lens cost.

Compliance

ANSI Z87.1+ rated for high-velocity and high-mass impact. 99.9% UVA/UVB protection. The polarized lens meets the same impact standard as non-polarized DEWALT lenses.

Performance Assessment

On outdoor sites with high-reflectivity surfaces — poured concrete slabs, standing water, metal roofing, and glass curtain wall work — the polarized lens eliminates horizontal surface glare that causes eye fatigue and visual distraction. Workers who wear non-polarized smoke lenses on these sites often compensate by squinting or adjusting position, which the DPG99 resolves. The trade-off is reduced effectiveness at reading LCD screens and certain digital instrument panels, where polarized lenses interact with the screen polarization and reduce visibility — a relevant limitation for equipment operators using in-cab displays.

Strengths

  • Polarized lens eliminates horizontal surface glare on water, concrete, glass, and metal — reduces eye fatigue on high-reflectivity outdoor sites
  • ANSI Z87.1+ high-impact rating with premium lens construction
  • Wraparound frame with rubber temples provides secure fit for active outdoor work
  • 99.9% UVA/UVB protection

Limitations

  • Polarized lenses reduce visibility of LCD screens and some digital instrument panels — equipment operators should evaluate before adopting
  • At $25.23, higher replacement cost than standard DEWALT lenses in the same lineup
  • Only available in single Polarized Smoke variant — not offered in clear or other tints

Recommended Use Cases

Outdoor concrete work, flat roofing with standing water exposure, glass and curtain wall installation, waterfront and marine construction, and any outdoor site with high-reflectivity surface glare that causes eye fatigue or visual distraction. Not recommended for equipment operators relying on LCD instrument displays where polarized lens interaction is a concern.

Verdict

The DEWALT DPG99 is the appropriate choice for outdoor workers whose primary eye fatigue driver is surface glare rather than brightness alone. Workers needing general outdoor sun protection without anti-glare premium should consider the DEWALT Contractor Pro in Smoke or Silver Mirror at significantly lower cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does polarized mean in safety glasses?
Polarized lenses contain a filter that blocks horizontally-oriented light waves, which are the primary component of surface glare reflected from water, pavement, and glass. Standard tinted lenses reduce overall brightness; polarized lenses specifically eliminate reflective glare while maintaining clearer vision of non-reflective surfaces.
Why do polarized lenses affect LCD screens?
LCD screens are themselves polarized. When a polarized lens is oriented perpendicular to the screen's polarization, the screen appears dark or blacked out. This is a physics interaction, not a defect. Workers relying on in-cab displays, smartphones, or digital readouts on a regular basis should evaluate this limitation before adopting polarized safety glasses.
What ANSI rating do the DPG99 glasses carry?
ANSI Z87.1+ for high-velocity and high-mass impact. The polarized smoke lens meets the same impact standard as non-polarized DEWALT lenses.
Are polarized lenses available in clear?
Polarized lenses are only effective in tinted or partially tinted configurations — the polarizing filter inherently reduces some light transmission. The DPG99 is offered in Polarized Smoke only.

If you have to wear Z87 safety glasses and you MUST have quality and protection for your eyes than look no further
I have to wear Z87 safety glasses; I work for AT&T which is very strict in safety.I needed polarized lenses with uv protection due to Lasik eye surgery 20 yrs ago.I have tried several other brands of safety glasses that claim to be polarized but have found all to be majorly inferior to these glasses. When I take my alcohol pads and clean my lenses there is no film that comes off, etc. like all the others. These are actually plastic lenses! The only thing I do not like is the yellow rubber breaks down after 4-6 months of usage and breaks. I don't like buying these every 4-6 months.Several posts here say the same thing; EXCELLENT LENSES!! but the yellow rubber breaks and in other photos on here is exactly where mine break too every time!I hope DeWalt see these reviews and complaints about the yellow rubber on the frame and fix but until they do I will continue to buy these because there is noting better!

Best there is!
These are used at work. They are well built and I like the fact that they are polarized. For the money, they are a good value. For me this is all about the dual purpose use of the glasses. They allow me to be in safety compliance on the job site. Working outside they also allow me the ability to have sunglasses on it the mid-day sun.I usually buy a pair of these several times a year. The price is right so I have no problems buying a new pair when I begin noticing scratches on the lens or when I misplace them somewhere.

Love them
glasess are polarized what is the point of sunglasess. I use them for work and i love them. I live at Slovakia and i ordered them from USA because we dont have them at my country. They are little more easy to break compare to old model but lightier. So worth it. Have a nice day all.

Sunglasses safety glasses
I like the glasses they’re really good but they have gotten expensive. I’ll probably try to find something comparable at a cheaper price.

Disappointing drop in quality
Over the last 10-12 years I have had 8 or 9 pairs of these glasses and the first 5 or 6 pairs were great. For under $25 I got a good pair of glasses that fit well and would last me for a year or so under tough jobsite use. The last 3 pairs have broken on the upper frame in under 2 months of use (not abuse). When the first pair broke I gave Dewalt the benefit of the doubt for all the previous pairs that had held up and bought another pair. When the second pair broke under the same conditions I gave up on them. I came back around a year later and bought another pair hoping there was a difference but there wasn’t. I won’t be buying anymore.

Great polarized sunglasses for activities
I have used these for years for mountain biking and whitewater kayaking as well as all around sunglasses. The polarization seems to be better than other sunglasses I have used. Helps greatly on the water to clearly see the rapids in high glare situations. Even without the strap, the glasses fit snug to my head and don’t move at all even when rolling a kayak in fast white water situations. I definitely prefer, knowing I have a safety rated ANSI Z87.1+ lense in front of my eyes when I am in potential impact situations whether upside down on a shallow river or hitting sticks and crashing on a mountain bike.
