Decibel Defense Professional Safety Ear Muffs - NRR 27 Over-the-Head Hearing Protection Overview

The Decibel Defense Professional Safety Ear Muffs are a passive, over-the-head hearing protector built for sustained wear at the range, on the jobsite, and around loud power equipment. The rated Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is 27 dB, tested to ANSI S3.19. That is the number you should plan around — the larger "37dB" figure used in the marketing title is a promotional claim, not the lab-verified NRR, so we list this muff at its honest, tested rating.

Form factor is a standard over-the-head headband with adjustable cups, which seals well over bare ears and works for shooting, mowing, sanding, grinding, and general construction noise. The padded cushions and dual-cup design are aimed at all-day comfort during extended sessions. If you wear a hard hat, this over-the-head model is not cap-mounted — choose a cap-mount muff for helmet integration.

Remember that the NRR printed on any muff overstates field performance. Under the OSHA 1910.95 hearing-conservation framework, NIOSH recommends derating the labeled NRR before estimating real exposure at the ear. To size protection correctly, see how to calculate the NRR you need and the explainer on what NRR actually means. Browse the full ear muffs range or the broader hearing protection category to compare options.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Shooting & gun range Strong NRR 27 over-the-head muff handles most rimfire, pistol, and rifle sessions; double up with plugs for indoor ranges or magnum loads.
Mowing, trimming & yard power tools Strong Comfortable seal for sustained gas-engine and string-trimmer noise during long outdoor sessions.
Construction & general industrial noise Good Suits grinding, sanding, and saw work; confirm derated NRR covers your measured dBA exposure under OSHA 1910.95.
Hard hat / cap-mount use Not suitable This is an over-the-head headband, not cap-mounted. Pick a cap-mount muff for helmet slots.
Situational awareness (hear range commands/traffic) Limited Passive muff blocks ambient sound; if you need to hear voices between shots, choose an electronic amplified muff instead.

Earmuffs reduce noise, but the labeled NRR is a laboratory number — real-world protection is lower (NIOSH and OSHA both derate it). The muff only protects if the cushions seal fully around the ear: long hair, eyeglass temples, and gaps under a hard-hat-mounted muff all break the seal. In very high noise, wear muffs and earplugs together (dual protection). Electronic muffs amplify quiet sounds and cut loud impulses but still protect only to their rated NRR. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 sets the 85 dBA action level; size protection to your measured noise — see how to calculate the NRR you need.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • ANSI S3.19-tested NRR of 27 dB for solid broadband attenuation
  • Over-the-head headband seals well over bare ears
  • Padded dual-cup design built for extended, all-day wear
  • Versatile across shooting, mowing, woodworking, and jobsite noise
  • Passive design with no batteries to charge or replace
Cons
  • Marketed '37dB' figure overstates the lab-verified NRR of 27
  • Real-world protection is lower than the label after NIOSH/OSHA derating
  • Over-the-head only — not cap-mountable for hard hats
  • Passive (no amplification) — won't let you hear range commands or conversation between shots

How It Compares

Within the over-the-head, NRR-27-class ear muffs we carry, the Decibel Defense competes with passive options like the 3M PELTOR X4A (NRR 27) and steps above lighter muffs such as the X2A (NRR 24). If you need to hear range commands or conversation while still protecting to a rated NRR, an electronic amplified muff is the better tool — compare the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic ear muffs or the Caldwell E-Max Shadows electronic ear muffs in our electronic ear muffs range. For maximum passive attenuation, higher-NRR muffs and plug-plus-muff doubling outperform any single NRR-27 muff — see our best passive ear muffs guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the real NRR of the Decibel Defense Professional Safety Ear Muffs?

The rated, ANSI S3.19-tested Noise Reduction Rating is 27 dB. The '37dB' figure in the marketing title is a promotional claim, not the lab-verified NRR — plan your protection around 27.

Why does the listing say 37dB but you list NRR 27?

We publish the honest, lab-tested NRR. The 37dB number is a consumer marketing claim that doesn't match the certified ANSI S3.19 rating, so we rate this muff at its verified NRR of 27 to avoid overstating protection.

How much noise does NRR 27 actually block in the real world?

Less than the label. NIOSH recommends derating the labeled NRR (commonly by 50%) for field use. See our guide on how to calculate the NRR you need to estimate exposure at the ear.

Is this an electronic or passive ear muff?

This is a passive muff — it attenuates sound mechanically with no amplification, Bluetooth, or radio. If you want to hear range commands or conversation between shots, choose an electronic amplified muff instead.

What form factor is it — over-the-head or behind-the-neck?

It's an over-the-head headband design with adjustable padded cups, the most common style for shooting and general industrial use.

Can I mount these on a hard hat?

No. This is an over-the-head model and is not cap-mountable. For helmet integration you'll need a cap-mount earmuff that fits hard-hat accessory slots.

Are these good for shooting and the gun range?

Yes. The NRR 27 rating and over-the-head seal suit most outdoor pistol and rifle sessions. For indoor ranges or magnum loads, double up with foam ear plugs for added protection.

Can I wear these for mowing and yard work?

Yes — the padded cups and NRR 27 rating handle gas-engine, trimmer, and mower noise well during long outdoor sessions.

Do these meet OSHA hearing requirements?

OSHA 1910.95 requires protection that keeps your derated exposure at or below the action level. The muff's NRR 27 helps, but you must verify the derated value covers your measured dBA. See our OSHA 1910.95 overview.

Should I choose these or an electronic muff?

Choose this passive muff for simple, battery-free attenuation. Choose an electronic muff like the Howard Leight Impact Sport if you need amplification to hear voices or commands while still protecting to a rated NRR.

How do these compare to other passive ear muffs?

At NRR 27 they sit in the upper-middle of passive muffs. Lighter muffs rate NRR 22-24, while top passive models and plug-plus-muff doubling go higher. See our best passive ear muffs guide to compare.

Are batteries required?

No. This is a passive design with no electronics, so there are no batteries to charge or replace — it's ready to wear out of the box.

Very good noise blocking
I can't speak to the exact amount of reduction but it does a good job across the frequency spectrum. I bought these to block mid to lower frequencies associated with lawn mower blades. It does better than other ear muffs I have tried. It's easy to block high frequencies but more difficult on the lower end. So I'm happy with the performance. Since I just received these, I can't say much about their build quality, but comfort is good without the typical head squeeze.

So far so Good, with this and earplugs blocks neighbor's loud Harley Davidson....
I have some neighbors with motorcycles....A couple Harleys and some other motorcycle I'm not sure the brand....They start them up....and the instant they press the ignition and the motor starts there is from silence to this sudden loud THUNK which will spook anybody out of their sleep....Then they let the motorcycles idle which is loud in and of itself....And then they just rev rev rev rev.....For as long as 15 to 30 minutes....At the worst times....Early in the morning....really late at night....I have always had super sensitive hearing....And they roll their bikes just outside their garage and start them up....30 feet away is my bedroom window and the wall borders all 3 bedrooms so there is no escaping getting woken out of sleep....I have found some great and comfortable earplugs which I wear pretty much 24/7 because the sound of things such as cars and trucks driving down the road is just so loud to my ears....I wish they had earplugs that were stronger and block out everything....But apparently not....if a person wants complete silence apparently the only option is blast loud music until you go so deaf you need hearing aids to listen to someone talking to you across the table....Anyways....I needed more sound blocking than my really nice and comfortable earplugs because I'm getting blasted with like 120 decibels from these people and their Harleys....which jolts anybody out of deep sleep....I have tried a few of these over the ear muffs and these seem to do a pretty good job, the first pair was I think maybe unbranded....They worked good but soon my ears hurt because they didn't have enough room so the top and bottom of my ears would rub and get sore....I couldn't wear them very long plus they would catch some hair in the side parts that adjust the fit, I tried another brand something like pro for sho.... Or something like that....They work okay....But they were "Made low profile thin" like when somebody buys something to protect their hearing they are going to care about something like that....They worked okay, but before long they seemed to be blocking less and less sound....So I went looking for something else....I decided to try these....They seem to really be doing a good job so far.....Sure they are a tad bulky but I'm not looking for style points....I'm trying to get peace and quiet my hearing vs neighbors Harleys....These so far seem to be doing just what I need....They are also quite comfortable too....They don't make my ears or sides or top of my head sore...They seem to be blocking out noise just like I need if I am going to get sleep....The other brand soon started blocking less and less sound, unfortunately..... Hopefully these will last and won't also start losing sound blocking abilities.....I wonder about how it's listed as 37Db but then it also says it meats the standard max of 34Db.....So is it 37 or 34? It seems to say it's both, which is odd....But so far.....So good.....Peace and quiet even with the jerks next door who make tons of noise with their Harleys at all hours....I like the fact these are so far very comfortable to fit....Even to sleep in..... Hopefully these hold up well over time....At this point, I definitely recommend these, they are big, yes, but they block more sound because they create a good seal and they are comfortable to wear, even for sleep.

Exceeded expectations!
True confession: I bought these because I’m scared of storms. We’ve recently been in an endless cycle of severe storms hammering the area with hail, horizontal rain, and damaging winds. One night we were pounded with a series of hail storms, so music was cranked up to drown out the sound of the hail. But during one of the storms, there was a roar of noise from the hail on the roof so intense that it drowned out the music. I never wanna hear a sound like that again, ever, so I decided to get some heavy-duty ear muffs, since we had another couple of weeks of crazy weather in the forecast. After spending too much time weeding through products and reviews, I finally chose these. They’re phenomenal!! They take the noise level WAY down, and they’re actually enjoyable to wear. They’re easy to adjust, even with arthritic hands, and so comfy that it’s easy to forget you’re wearing them. I’m finding all kinds of reasons to use them: the paper shredder with a super loud motor and teeth-gritting mechanical whine, middle of the night fart-can drivers, and the neighbor who uses their screaming leaf blower for everything—snow, leaves, grass clippings, scaring squirrels from nesting in the gutters…And yes, they work perfectly for hailstorms! A couple of nights ago we had a whopper of a round of hail, but as soon as that awful sound began, I took refuge in these amazing earmuffs. Instead of having a coronary, I was able to stay zen and chill and even fell asleep with the earmuffs on. I’ve used these at least a dozen times in the past several weeks and they have stayed feeling solidly built and very comfortable. The material where the earpieces contact your skin is totally non- irritating (for me) and of good quality. When they get sweaty it’s easy to wipe off or let dry by flipping the earpieces outward. They don’t feel sweaty when wearing them, though. Even though it was 80F when the last storm hit, I was surprised to see sweat on the earpieces when I removed them, because they never felt like any heat was building up, at all.Bear in mind that you will be able to hear things through these earmuffs—they don’t completely block all sound. Complete elimination of sound is not what they are designed for. But they decrease the sound level so significantly that you’ll be amazed. If you are using these through stormy weather, make sure you have a way to get tornado/flood warnings, like getting alerts sent to your phone and keeping your phone next to you on vibrate and ring. I could faintly hear the tornado sirens through the earmuffs, but a siren is a couple of blocks from my house and the wind direction was blowing the sound toward my house.I never thought I’d consider a pair of sound reducing ear muffs an essential for a bug-out bag, but I’ll be taking these next time the weather chases us out of our homes. I’d also highly recommend these for combat veterans with PTSD, especially during July 4th when the neighborhood pyros are keeping every living thing from having a normal life.Apologies for the novel, but one last thing: the colors are as vibrant as they look online. I have them in yellow and they’re a scrumptious color. Five stars for a rating isn’t enough—I’d give these 10. And much gratitude for the quality and usefulness of this product that has actually made life less stressful in certain situations.

My most effective set I have for hearing protection.
Needed a new set for my zero turn mower. The drone of three blades was sounding like it was hitting a low frequency resonance in multiple hearing protection muffs. I open the box and was underwhelmed. Just another set that will have the same issue I thought.NOT SO, these soaked up the sound! No more low drone that goes on and on even with my Samsung ear buds set on noice cancelation. I have 4 other pairs ranging from cheep ones that came with my chainsaw to bluetooth upper end ones. None removed the LF drone of resonance but the Decibel Defense.I don't mind cutting grass now. Ear buds fit fine within the ear cups for music. Just the right amount of pressure on the side of the head, you can wear them for hours. I did the other day. Cut the grass and cut linbs down from a tree and cut them up for fire wood. Wore them for 6 hours and felt fine with nothing to comment on but zero headaches! One of the better purchases I've made.... no batteries!

Lend Me Your Ears
These are nicely made, seem substantial. I left off one star because I think the ear pads could seal off noise a bit better. Works better with target shooting than it does running a mowing machine. The really low growl of the engine doesn't seem to be stopped.

Works as advertised.
A good fit and comfortable. Cancelled out just the right amount of noise. Use for lawnmower, gas weed eater, and my electric edger. Love the color (green), easy to find in the garage

Great product, great value for money.
These did EXACTLY what I needed them to do...kill the loud noise of saws and drills in my workshop. They were priced fair, perform admirably, and thus far seem to be holding up very well. I would definitely recommend them to anyone in need of defense from loud noises.Minor things that bug me (something always does). 1. I have a small head, but they seem to have limited range of expansion even for me. 2. I wish they had a little more room inside so I could wear my Airpods comfortably.
