ANSI Z89.1 Bullard cap style flat front hard hat HDPE Made in USA ratchet suspension

The Bullard S51 is a flat front cap style HDPE hard hat built around a three-rib shell, four-point ratchet suspension, and cotton brow pad β€” the same core platform as the S61 cap, distinguished by a flat front brim profile that reduces visual obstruction when looking upward and provides a lower-profile appearance suited for facilities or programs where the standard peaked front brim creates line-of-sight or clearance issues. Domestically manufactured in Cynthiana, Kentucky, the S51 supports ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 compliance and domestic sourcing documentation requirements. For the full range of hard hats, see the complete collection.

Construction and Design

The S51 shell uses high-density polyethylene with a three-rib crown profile and a flat front brim geometry β€” a profile that sits lower at the front than the conventional peaked-brim cap design. The flat front reduces visual interference when looking upward through overhead structures, a practical advantage for ironworkers, linemen, and structural workers who frequently sight upward along columns, beams, or cables. The four-point ratchet suspension calibrates to head circumference with a single adjustment dial. The cotton brow pad absorbs sweat during sustained physical work and replaces independently to extend economic service life. The shell does not incorporate ventilation openings, maintaining ANSI electrical insulation eligibility across the full product line.

Compliance and Ratings

The S51 is certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type I, with electrical class ratings consistent with Bullard's non-vented cap line. The flat front brim does not reduce the shell's impact protection relative to standard cap profiles β€” both meet ANSI Type I top-of-head impact requirements. Type I covers top-of-head impact; environments requiring ANSI Type II lateral-impact protection should evaluate Type 2 safety helmets. The HDPE shell does not provide the fiberglass-level chemical resistance available from alternative shell materials. The domestic manufacturing provenance satisfies Buy American documentation requirements for federal, utility, and government infrastructure programs.

Performance Assessment

The flat front brim's primary performance advantage is upward sightline clarity β€” workers in structural iron, overhead utility, and tower work report the reduced brim profile improves visibility when looking straight up without tilting the head back far enough to disturb suspension fit. The practical difference is incremental in ground-level applications where the standard peaked brim does not create interference; the S51 is a purpose-specific choice for workers whose tasks regularly demand upward sighting. The four-point ratchet provides adequate fit calibration for standard head sizes; workers performing sustained overhead or head-forward tasks may prefer the six-point suspension systems available in the C33 and C34 full brim models from the hard hats collection. Five colors are available with reliable stock across most variants.

Strengths

  • Flat front brim improves upward sightline clarity for structural, tower, and overhead utility work
  • Three-rib HDPE shell meets ANSI Type I impact requirements
  • Non-vented construction maintains electrical insulation eligibility
  • Replaceable cotton brow pad for extended economic service life
  • Made in USA β€” domestic sourcing documentation for government and utility contracts
  • Five core color options with consistent availability

Limitations

  • Four-point suspension provides less crown load distribution than six-point alternatives
  • Cap profile provides no lateral or rear brim weather deflection
  • ANSI Type I only β€” no lateral-impact certification for Type II environments

Recommended Use Cases

The S51 is appropriate for structural ironworkers, tower technicians, overhead linemen, and workers in any application where frequent upward sightlines make the standard peaked cap brim a visibility impediment. It is a purpose-specific selection β€” workers who do not regularly look upward through structures will find no practical sightline advantage over the standard S61 cap profile, and the S61 provides the same four-point ratchet, cotton brow pad, and Made-in-USA construction at equivalent pricing. For outdoor workers requiring rain and sun deflection on all sides, the Bullard C33 or C34 full brim provides equivalent domestic manufacturing with full brim coverage from the hard hats collection.

Verdict

The Bullard S51 addresses a specific ergonomic requirement: improved upward sightline clarity for overhead structural and utility work where the standard peaked cap brim creates visual interference. It delivers this through the flat front brim profile without compromising ANSI Type I compliance or domestic manufacturing provenance. Buyers who do not regularly work in upward-sighting applications should evaluate the S61 for equivalent performance without the specialized brim profile from the hard hats collection.

Blah color
Just so you know. This hard hat shows as a real nice blue on the order page but it is no where near that color. Its just a dull boring lusterless plain blue. We plan on painting it now because of the color so we will not be returning it.

Bullard S51 Flat Front Cap Style Hard Hat, HDPE, 4-Point Ratchet, Made in USA

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Bullard S51 different from a standard cap-style hard hat?
Its flat front brim sits lower than a conventional peaked brim, reducing visual obstruction when looking upward β€” a practical advantage for ironworkers, linemen, and structural workers who frequently sight up along columns, beams, or cables.
Is the Bullard S51 ANSI certified?
Yes. It is certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type I for top-of-head impact, and the flat front brim does not reduce impact protection relative to standard cap profiles.
Can the S51 be used around electrical hazards?
The S51 is non-vented, which maintains electrical insulation eligibility, with electrical class ratings consistent with Bullard's non-vented cap line. Verify the class rating on the specific hat's label before use in electrical environments.
What colors does the Bullard S51 come in?
Five colors: White, Yellow, Red, Kentucky Blue, and Hi-Viz Yellow, with reliable stock across most variants.
How much does the Bullard S51 cost?
Between $17.12 (Hi-Viz Yellow) and $28.38 (Yellow) depending on color.
Is the Bullard S51 made in America?
Yes, it is domestically manufactured in Cynthiana, Kentucky, satisfying Buy American documentation requirements for federal, utility, and government infrastructure programs.
What suspension does the S51 use?
A four-point ratchet suspension with a single adjustment dial. Workers performing sustained overhead or head-forward tasks may prefer the six-point suspensions in Bullard's C33 and C34 full brim models.
Does the S51 have a replaceable brow pad?
Yes. The cotton brow pad absorbs sweat during sustained physical work and replaces independently to extend the hat's economic service life.
Who should buy the S51 instead of the S61?
The S51 is a purpose-specific choice for workers whose tasks regularly demand upward sighting β€” structural iron, tower, and overhead utility work. In ground-level applications the practical difference from a standard peaked brim is incremental.
Is the Bullard S51 vented?
No. The shell has no ventilation openings, which is what preserves its electrical insulation eligibility.
Does the S51 protect against side impacts?
No. It is ANSI Type I only, covering top-of-head impact. Type II environments require a lateral-impact certified safety helmet.
What is the S51 shell made from?
High-density polyethylene with a three-rib crown profile. HDPE does not offer the fiberglass-level chemical resistance available from alternative shell materials.
