3M WorkTunes Connect Bluetooth Ear Muffs - NRR 27 Wireless Hearing Protector (Over-the-Head) Overview

The 3M WorkTunes Connect Wireless Hearing Protector is an over-the-head Bluetooth ear muff built for crews and operators who want to stream audio without giving up jobsite hearing protection. It carries a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) of 27 dB under ANSI S3.19, and its passive ear cups seal out steady noise from mowers, blowers, shop tools, and equipment while the integrated Bluetooth radio plays music, podcasts, or phone-call audio straight from your paired device.

Be realistic about protection. The NRR printed on the box is a laboratory number. NIOSH and OSHA both recommend derating it for the field - a common approach is subtracting 25-50% (or 7 dB) from the labeled NRR - so plan your stack around your measured exposure, not the headline figure. If your time-weighted average noise level is high, this muff alone may not be enough and you should pair it with plugs for dual protection. Use our how to calculate NRR walkthrough and review OSHA 1910.95 before you rely on any single device.

Form factor is a standard over-the-head headband, not cap-mount, so it is not designed to clip into a hard hat slot. The streaming function amplifies the audio you choose to play - it does not add quiet-sound amplification or impulse sound-restoration the way a true electronic shooting muff does, and it still only protects to its NRR 27. Browse the full ear muffs range or the electronic ear muffs category to compare options, and see what is NRR if you are choosing across ratings.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Mowing, landscaping, blower/trimmer work Strong fit NRR 27 over-the-head muff seals steady equipment noise while you stream audio; ideal for solo outdoor work where call/music access matters.
Shop, woodworking, and general jobsite noise Good fit Handles continuous tool noise well at NRR 27; derate for your measured exposure and add plugs if your TWA is high.
Construction sites requiring a hard hat Not suitable Over-the-head headband, not cap-mount - it will not clip into a hard hat. Choose a cap-mount muff for helmet use.
Indoor/outdoor work needing phone calls + music Strong fit Bluetooth streaming and call audio are the core feature; pair to a phone and keep volume moderate so you still hear alarms.
Shooting range / impulse-noise sports Limited fit Passive muff with Bluetooth - no impulse sound restoration or quiet-sound amplification. For range use, see a true electronic shooting muff.
Very high-noise environments (above ~95 dBA TWA) Use with plugs Derated NRR 27 may fall short alone; combine with foam ear plugs for dual protection and verify against OSHA limits.

Earmuffs reduce noise, but the labeled NRR is a laboratory number — real-world protection is lower (NIOSH and OSHA both derate it). The muff only protects if the cushions seal fully around the ear: long hair, eyeglass temples, and gaps under a hard-hat-mounted muff all break the seal. In very high noise, wear muffs and earplugs together (dual protection). Electronic muffs amplify quiet sounds and cut loud impulses but still protect only to their rated NRR. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 sets the 85 dBA action level; size protection to your measured noise — see how to calculate the NRR you need.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • NRR 27 (ANSI S3.19) passive attenuation seals steady jobsite, shop, and lawn noise
  • Bluetooth streaming plays music, podcasts, and call audio from a paired phone without removing the muffs
  • Over-the-head headband fits most adults and is simple to don and adjust
  • Lets you stay connected and take calls while still protecting your hearing
  • Rechargeable wireless design eliminates the dangling aux cord of radio-only muffs
Cons
  • Real-world protection is lower than the labeled NRR 27 once you derate per NIOSH/OSHA
  • Over-the-head only - not cap-mount, so it will not attach to a hard hat
  • Bluetooth amplifies the audio you choose; it does NOT add quiet-sound amplification or impulse sound-restoration like a true electronic shooting muff
  • Streaming volume can mask warning signals if turned up - keep it moderate around equipment
  • Single NRR 27 muff may be insufficient alone in very high-noise areas (pair with plugs)

How It Compares

Within 3M's higher-attenuation muff lineup, the passive PELTOR X4A (NRR 27) matches this muff's rating without any electronics - choose it if you only need maximum steady-noise blocking and no audio. The WorkTunes Connect sits one step up in convenience: same passive sealing class, plus Bluetooth streaming and calls. If you specifically need quiet-sound amplification and impulse protection for the range - features this Bluetooth muff does not have - look instead at a dedicated electronic shooting muff such as the Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic ear muffs or the Caldwell E-Max Shadows electronic ear muffs. For premium tactical-grade electronics, compare the MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X electronic ear muffs. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NRR of the 3M WorkTunes Connect?

It is rated NRR 27 dB under ANSI S3.19. Remember that this is a laboratory figure - real-world protection is lower, so NIOSH and OSHA recommend derating it (commonly by 25-50%, or 7 dB) when you plan for your measured exposure.

Is the WorkTunes Connect a cap-mount muff that fits a hard hat?

No. It is an over-the-head headband muff and is not designed to clip into a hard hat slot. If you need helmet-mounted protection, choose a cap-mount earmuff instead.

Does the Bluetooth feature amplify quiet sounds like an electronic shooting muff?

No. The WorkTunes Connect streams the audio you choose (music, podcasts, calls) from your phone. It does not amplify low-level ambient sound or compress loud impulses the way a true electronic sound-restoration muff does. It still only protects to its NRR 27.

Can I take phone calls while wearing these?

Yes. Once paired over Bluetooth, you can stream audio and take calls from your phone without removing the muffs - that is the core feature of the WorkTunes Connect.

Is NRR 27 enough for my workplace under OSHA?

It depends on your time-weighted average noise level. Derate the NRR 27 for field use, compare it to your measured exposure, and check it against OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95. See our OSHA 1910.95 overview and the NRR calculator guide to confirm coverage.

Will these block enough noise for mowing and landscaping?

Yes, this is a strong use case. The passive NRR 27 cups seal steady mower, blower, and trimmer noise while you stream audio. For very loud equipment or long shifts, derate the rating and consider adding ear plugs.

Can I use the WorkTunes Connect at a shooting range?

It is a passive Bluetooth muff, not an electronic shooting muff, so it has no impulse sound-restoration or quiet-sound amplification. For range use where you want to hear range commands between shots, a dedicated electronic shooting muff is a better fit.

How is this different from the passive 3M PELTOR X4A?

Both seal steady noise in the same NRR 27 class. The X4A is purely passive with no electronics, while the WorkTunes Connect adds Bluetooth streaming and phone-call audio. Choose based on whether you want audio connectivity.

Is the WorkTunes Connect dielectric / electrically insulated?

The manufacturer does not specify a dielectric rating for this model, so we do not claim one. If you need a non-conductive muff for electrical work, select a muff specifically rated as dielectric or electrically insulated.

Should I pair these with ear plugs for dual protection?

In very high-noise environments where the derated NRR 27 may fall short, yes - combining muffs with foam plugs adds protection. Use our NRR calculator to verify the combined rating meets your exposure before relying on it.

Does streaming music make it harder to hear alarms or warnings?

It can if the volume is high. Keep streaming at a moderate level so you can still hear backup alarms, horns, and verbal warnings around equipment. The muffs protect to NRR 27 regardless of volume.

How do I choose between these and other electronic ear muffs?

If you mainly want to stream audio and take calls while working, the WorkTunes Connect fits. If you need to amplify quiet ambient sound and protect against impulse noise, browse our electronic ear muffs collection and compare amplification-focused models like the Howard Leight Impact Sport.

Amazing value and works better than more expensive brands!
This is a home run! I own the over ear and in ear IsoTunes, which were supposed to be the best. I spent a fortune. I felt the noise reduction was minimal and the Bluetooth volume stunk - I kept getting apple warnings and had to have the volume on full blast to even hear anythingI was not expecting much for $60 but gave it a go. These things are amazing! I can keep volume at a normal level and still hear my music perfectly all while greatly blocking out the tractor and mower noise. They fit well on the head and even have cutouts in the band over the head so it doesn’t press the baseball hat button into your head like other brands - very well thought out.I have a large head and they fit well, not too tight. Usual cons of any over hear headphone in that you get a bit sweaty after prolonged use. Nothing really can be done about that. The soft padding is very comfortable. I had them on about 6+ hrs today and it was no issue.Highly recommend you give it a shot!

Great hearing protection
Great ear protecting headphones.Pros:1. Bluetooth range is pretty good2. Battery life is by far the best thing about these. I use these 8.5 hours a day 5 days a week close to max volume (bc they’re quiet) for 2 weeks straight. Used these for several months like that. At the end of the second week I would charge these and then start the 2 weeks straight cycle over. They would only get down to 30% ish at the very end of the second week.3. These do cancel out a lot of sounds. I use these in a shop environment so it mostly sits around 80 db but there are a lot of db spikes that measure up to 100+ for short times (compressed air).4. Very comfortable. Comfortable enough to wear these for 8.5 hours a day 5 days a week.5. Also work well at indoor gun ranges.Cons:1. These have no bass what so ever. But they do protect your hearing. In my mind I’m ok with that trade off.2. They don’t get loud. Even podcasts I had these at 100% volume trying to hear the hosts voice.3. Don’t buy these for the built in microphone. Maybe it’s just bc I work in a shop but even when I was in quiet rooms no one could understand me the few times I took a phone call.TL;DR just read it

Good earmuffs
Work great in a very loud machining department. I am exposed to extremely loud noise all shift and these block everything out. The volume of the Bluetooth is good, I keep my volume about halfway and it's comfortable. They did take a little to loosen up and be comfortable on my ears, maybe a week or two of 8 hour shifts. They seem very durable, I can see them lasting a long time with proper care.

Much improved over previous generation
Long time user of the previous generation of these- had hundreds/thousands of hours of use of older style. They took damage in transport (crate of materials crushed them - such is the life of job site equipment). 3M was *not* able to provide me with a replacement headband, which I found very disappointing. I was on the verge of cannibalizing a pair of non Worktunes 3M muffs to rebuild mine but just jumped for these instead.Major improvements over the previous generation noticable out of the box:Audio quality is MARKEDLY better. Still a far cry from anything I'd use for pleasure listening, but the midrange honk of the previous gen has been replaced by a fuller bass, gentler midrange, and less stuffy highsFit and feel is better. The old ones created a tender pressure point on the top of my head after a couple hours of use. I just put up with it, but it seems like this has been addressed with the new headband design.USB C charging- it's 2026, of course. Nice to not have to keep an extra cable handy just for theseThe new location of the power/control button is WAY better, and the new volume toggle is a very, very, welcome improvement.I like that it gives a percentage, not just high/med/low on startupAll in all- so far so good. Haven't tested call quality yet but that was totally fine on previous model.

You know it's good if you buy it thrice!
This pair of WorkTunes Connect hearing protection is my third pair. Not because they wore out, but because they are an essential piece of my power tool collection. Noise cancellation is supreme, battery life is unmatched, ability to bluetooth for incoming calls and alarms ensures that I stay in touch even while I'm totally engrossed with the tasks at hand. My newest model has some exciting modifications: wiring exiting the earpieces is reangled and stabilized to reduce breakage/shorting, and the buttons to answer calls and power the headset on/off have been repositioned and enlarged so you don't have to remove your work gloves! Looks like they thought of everything!

great headphones
I’ve tried a bunch of the cheap Bluetooth ear protection, and let me tell you, the 3M WorkTunes Connect are in a whole other league. The sound quality? Way better—like, actually clear with decent bass instead of the sound you get from budget models. Even in super loud spots, music and podcasts still sound full. Here’s the kicker though: the noise blocking is way better than budget products. Like, I’m running a chainsaw and barely hear it. No more blasting the volume just to hear my podcast over the lawnmower, which is awesome for not wrecking my ears.Bluetooth works solid, the buttons are glove-friendly, and they don’t make your head hurt after hours. Yeah, they cost more than the Walmart special, but trust me, it’s worth every penny. Would buy again.

They work, but audio not so good
Sound isolation is great. They fit nice and the Bluetooth works well. The audio quality however is pretty much garbage. My old cheap dewalt in ear headphones sound night and day better than these. The output is low. The sound is tiny and thin, and the bass response is awful. The stereo image is also horrible. They will be fine for work, but if you want good sound quality definitely look elsewhere

Works great top and is uncomfortable, wear a hat
Battery life is really good, sound is great for this type of use. the ability to answer a phone call is hilarious as the mic does not have noise cancelling so the other end only heard saws and shopvacs running. these are great for the low price and work well for a construction site or garage. would not try to use them for shooting muffs as they cant handle that high of sound levels. Headband is uncomfortable on a chrome dome, so I just wear a dirty old baseball cap when I put these on.

Great battery, plenty loud despite other comments. Perfect for mowing!
Excellent battery, plenty loud enough using a residential gas mower or backpack blower. I primarily use it to listen to audio when working in the yard and its perfect for my needs. Bluetooth connects easily. It does fit pretty tight around the ears, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Highly recommend if you have a similar use case!

Turn My Headphones Up
I love my 3M WorkTunes headphones. These are actually replacing my old headphones. These new ones have a very nice battery life, good sound quality, they’re durable, and easily connects to Bluetooth. They’re not very lightweight but not so heavy that it’s noticeable. Pick up a set and listen to all the yacht rock and lo-fi you could ever want.
