EDITORIAL REVIEW — 3M Versaflo TR-300N+HKL Healthcare PAPR Kit Large — Powered Air Purifying Respirator

Assessed on the standards the product is actually certified to and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.

The 3M Versaflo TR-300N+HKL Healthcare PAPR Kit Large is the large-headcover configuration of the TR-300N+ Powered Air Purifying Respirator starter kit for healthcare, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and life sciences respiratory protection programs — combining the TR-300N+ NIOSH-approved PAPR motor blower unit with a large-size soft headcover for workers with larger head dimensions requiring a properly-fitted healthcare PAPR assembly. The TR-300N+ is 3M's healthcare-designated Versaflo PAPR platform, designed and certified for the infection control, pharmaceutical production, and laboratory environments where HEPA filtration efficiency and contamination-free operation are the primary respiratory protection requirements. The large-size HKL headcover provides the same full-head positive-pressure filtered air environment as the small HKS configuration, calibrated for the larger head dimensions that require the HKL size to achieve appropriate coverage, airflow distribution, and protective performance throughout extended clinical and production shifts.

3M Versaflo TR-300N+HKL Healthcare PAPR Kit Large — Key Features

An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.

  • TR-300N+ PAPR motor unit — healthcare-designated NIOSH-approved PAPR with HEPA filtration
  • Large headcover size — HKL fitted for workers with larger head dimensions for proper coverage and airflow
  • Complete starter kit — motor unit plus healthcare headcover for immediate program deployment
  • Positive-pressure PAPR design — no facial seal required; extends HEPA protection to workers who cannot be fit-tested
  • Healthcare, pharmaceutical, and laboratory application — HEPA filtration for infection control and contamination-sensitive environments

Large Headcover Size: Proper Fit for Workers with Larger Head Dimensions

PAPR headcover sizing directly affects protection level and operational comfort. A headcover that is too small creates a tight fit that restricts head movement, compromises worker comfort during extended wear, and may not achieve the full drape and coverage that the positive-pressure system assumes in its certification testing. A headcover that is too large creates loose areas where the headcover does not maintain proper proximity to the worker's head, reducing the evenness of airflow distribution across the internal surface and potentially creating dead zones where filtered air exchange is insufficient. The HKL large size addresses these concerns for workers with head dimensions that fall outside the range the HKS small headcover is designed for.

Healthcare PAPR programs that serve a diverse workforce — the typical situation in hospital systems, academic medical centers, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities — must stock both HKS and HKL headcover sizes to ensure that each worker is assigned the correct size. The TR-300N+HKL kit enables program procurement of both the motor unit and the large headcover as a single unit, streamlining initial deployment for workers identified during the PAPR program fitting assessment as requiring the large headcover configuration.

TR-300N+ Healthcare PAPR: HEPA Protection for the Full Clinical and Pharmaceutical Workforce

The fundamental value of the TR-300N+ PAPR system in healthcare and pharmaceutical environments is the extension of HEPA-level respiratory protection to workers who cannot use tight-fitting filtering facepiece respirators or elastomeric half-masks. In every healthcare and pharmaceutical workforce, a portion of workers cannot achieve adequate seal with tight-fitting respirators due to facial hair (which breaks the seal along the respirator perimeter), facial structural characteristics, or medical conditions affecting the facial tissue where the respirator seals. For aerosol-generating procedures in healthcare — intubation, bronchoscopy, CPR, high-flow oxygen — and for pharmaceutical manufacturing tasks involving potent active ingredients, respiratory protection cannot be left to the chance of a failed fit test or inadequate seal; it must be available with certainty to every worker who enters the high-exposure environment.

The TR-300N+ PAPR's positive-pressure headcover design removes the seal dependency. The continuous filtered airflow maintains a positive-pressure environment inside the headcover regardless of head shape or facial hair — ambient air is displaced by filtered air flowing out of the headcover at the perimeter rather than entering through a seal. This mechanism provides HEPA-level protection regardless of the worker's facial characteristics, making the NIOSH-approved protection level accessible to the full workforce without fit-testing restrictions.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Applications

Pharmaceutical manufacturing environments present PAPR requirements that differ in emphasis from healthcare infection control applications but share the same HEPA filtration and positive-pressure protection logic. Aseptic manufacturing workers in fill-finish and formulation areas handle potent pharmaceutical active ingredients (APIs) that require respiratory protection to prevent worker exposure to airborne API particles during processing, weighing, transfer, and cleaning operations. The occupational exposure limit (OEL) for potent compounds can be extremely low — nanogram to microgram per cubic meter levels for highly potent APIs — requiring the highest practical protection factors from respiratory protection equipment.

The TR-300N+ PAPR system, with its HEPA filtration and NIOSH-approved Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 25 or greater, provides the protection level appropriate for moderate-to-high potency compound handling in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The TR-300N+HKL kit deploys this protection to the larger-headed workers in pharmaceutical production who require the HKL headcover size for proper coverage and protection in production area operations.

Compliance and Certifications

  • NIOSH approved — TR-300N+ PAPR system NIOSH certified for healthcare and industrial applications
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 — PAPR supports respiratory protection program requirements
  • HEPA filtration — high-efficiency particulate protection for biological and pharmaceutical aerosols
  • cGMP compatible — TR-300N+ design suitable for pharmaceutical manufacturing GMP environments

Real-World Benefits

Large headcover ensures proper airflow distribution for workers requiring HKL sizing. A correctly-sized headcover delivers the TR-300N+ motor unit's rated airflow uniformly to the worker's breathing zone throughout the headcover interior. Workers requiring the HKL size achieve this uniform distribution only with the large headcover — the HKS small headcover on a larger-headed worker creates fit compromise that degrades both protection and comfort.

Integrated kit format simplifies procurement for new PAPR program participants. The TR-300N+HKL kit provides the motor unit and headcover together, reducing the procurement steps for onboarding a new worker into an existing TR-300N+ PAPR program. Program administrators can stock HKL kits for workers identified as requiring large headcovers without separately sourcing motor units and headcovers from different catalog items.

Same TR-300N+ motor platform as HKS kit enables component sharing across fleet. Both the HKS and HKL kits use the same TR-300N+ motor blower unit and TR-332/standard battery system. Facilities that maintain both HKS and HKL headcover inventory can interchange motor units and batteries across the fleet, with workers assigned the appropriate headcover size for their fitting assessment but drawing from a common motor unit pool.

Applications and Use Cases

  • Healthcare aerosol-generating procedures — TR-300N+ PAPR for larger-headed clinical staff during intubation, bronchoscopy, and high-risk infectious procedure protection
  • Pharmaceutical API manufacturing — HEPA PAPR for potent compound handling in formulation and fill-finish operations
  • Research and biosafety laboratories — TR-300N+ PAPR for larger-headed researchers working with infectious agents or BSL-2/BSL-3 materials
  • Clinical workers requiring PAPR due to fit-test barriers — HKL for bearded or larger-headed clinical staff needing HEPA-level protection without fit-test eligibility restrictions

Please read the description before you buy
This is a great product. Bag was removed for the pandemic by 3m because of supply chain issues, not the seller. Read the description. I use a lot of 3M products.... they let out a statement that certain thing would be left out or substituted with their products to continue to provide for the front line workers.

It's worth my investment for now.
Shield is just big enough for a person of average head size (hat size 7) If you wear long hair in a tail or bun, you'll have to adapt. Also, if you wear glasses or goggles , you won't have enough room in the mask as it will pull off of your head/face. The elastic is not tight fitting; it is simply thin. This mask won't stick to your face unless you are perspiring readily. The noise level is substantial as is the wind in your ears, so suggest to wear plugs. Temps below 40*f will cause frost to build up inside the mask. Temps above 75*f will net you a foggy mask. There are benefits to keep dust and a lot of odors out wearing this device. I find that it is worth wearing while doing a large portion of outdoor chores, for me.

Comfortable and battery is long lasting
I am a healthcare worker and wear for several hours a day. Comfortable, good quality product, but wish it was a little more affordable, but worth the piece of mind for safety.

Works well, but M/L head piece is too large and noisy
This is pretty easy to use once you watch the videos. NO PROBLEM setting it up! I bought this type head piece so that I could hear while wearing it, but didn’t realize that my (normal sized) head would have a gap around my ears when I turn it on! The air rushes out, and it’s louder than I thought it would be. Not really a problem when working, but hard to hear a phone with this on. Plan to get a full shroud cover and use a noise canceling ear piece.

Great for COVID units
I failed every single N95 seal test so I bought a PAPR. This one is pretty comfortable to wear in your head. The belt can be a little cumbersome to adjust and if you’re a bigger guy like me, the belt will need to be adjusted often. I ended up getting the backpack accessory to carry the PAPR on my back. Batter lasts me 2 shifts as I turn it off and remove after exiting rooms.

3M Versaflo TR-300N+HKL Healthcare PAPR Kit Large — Powered Air Purifying Respirator

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I determine whether a worker needs HKS or HKL?
3M provides head circumference measurement guidelines for selecting the appropriate Versaflo headcover size. Measure the worker's head circumference at the level of the mid-forehead and compare against the HKS/HKL size specification in the 3M product documentation. For workers near the boundary between sizes, assess fit with both headcover sizes under PAPR operating conditions and select the size that provides appropriate coverage with even airflow distribution. Document headcover size assignments in the PAPR program records as part of OSHA 1910.134 written respiratory protection program requirements.
Is the TR-300N+HKL the same protection level as the TR-300N+HKS?
Yes. When properly sized and correctly worn, the HKS and HKL configurations of the TR-300N+ kit provide the same NIOSH-approved protection level — the headcover size designation indicates the physical size of the headcover component, not a difference in filtration efficiency or protection factor. The protection level depends on the motor unit's filtration performance (HEPA) and airflow delivery rate, not on headcover size. Both configurations share the same TR-300N+ motor unit and filter specifications. ⭐ Rated 4.1★ on Amazon across 78 verified ratings (Amazon.com, Jun 2026) Related Products & Guides powered air purifying respirators respiratory protection respiratory protection complete guide respirator with beard 3M Versaflo TR-300-HIK Heavy Industry PAPR Kit 3M Versaflo TR-300-ECK Easy Clean PAPR Kit 3M Versaflo TR-300N+ HIK Heavy Industry PAPR K
What protection factor can I plan on?
Ten. OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns an APF of 10 to every filtering facepiece respirator regardless of whether it is rated 95, 99 or 100, so the maximum use concentration is ten times the exposure limit. If you need better than that, the answer is a different class of respirator, not a better disposable.
Does it protect against gases, vapours or solvents?
No. A particulate filter does nothing about gases or vapours. Those need a chemical cartridge on a half-mask or full-face facepiece, and a nuisance-level organic-vapour layer on a disposable is a comfort feature, not a rated filter.
What does an exhalation valve change, and what does it not?
A valve lowers breathing resistance and heat on exhale, which matters over a full shift. It does NOT raise the protection the wearer receives, and it provides no source control - a valved respirator vents the wearer's unfiltered breath, so where the point is to protect other people or a sterile field the unvalved version is the correct choice. Whether a given model has one is on its own listing.
Do I need a fit test before using it?
For occupational use, yes. 29 CFR 1910.134(f) requires a fit test before first use and at least annually after that, on the specific make, model and size that will be worn - a different size is a different respirator as far as the seal is concerned. Separately, Appendix B-1 requires a user seal check on every donning.
Does facial hair stop it working?
Yes. Hair crossing the sealing surface prevents a seal, and 1910.134 requires the seal area to be clean-shaven on any tight-fitting respirator. No strap tension compensates for it.
How long can one be worn before it is discarded?
Discard it when breathing resistance has risen noticeably, when the facepiece is soiled, damaged or deformed, when the straps have lost tension, or when a seal check can no longer be passed. Straps and the nose foam usually fail before the filter loads up.
Can it be washed or reused between shifts?
No. Washing destroys the filter media and the seal. A disposable filtering facepiece is discarded, not cleaned.
What is the difference between a respirator, a surgical N95 and a surgical mask?
A NIOSH-approved respirator is tested for filtration and fit and carries an assigned protection factor. A SURGICAL N95 is both NIOSH-approved and FDA-cleared for fluid resistance, so it does both jobs. A plain surgical or cloth mask is neither - no protection factor, no NIOSH approval. The approval is printed on the device; read it there rather than inferring it from the shape.
Can it be used in a confined space or an unknown atmosphere?
No. No air-purifying respirator may be used in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere under 1910.134. Those conditions require supplied air or an SCBA, and no filter rating changes that.
How should it be stored between uses?
Clean, dry and uncrushed, away from contaminated air. A respirator stored loose in a toolbox or a pocket deforms, and a deformed facepiece will not pass a seal check even if the filter is untouched.
