Best gift ever for a student
I'm a pretty hardworking student. And by pretty hardworking, I mean I'm a med student who studies all day.That being said, I need it to be perfectly quiet for me to get anything done. As in noises from the shower, noises from my fish tank filter, music from the other room, and even the AC in the library distract me enough that I don't get anything done. I've been looking at noise canceling headphones for a while, and even bought a cheap ($30) one (which lasted for about 6 months and broke the second I lent it to my little sister), but the majority of the good ones are ridiculously expensive and I just can't justify spending $200 on something that makes my life a little more convenient (read: no having to find obscure places on campus at midnight where nobody bothers going so I can study). I thought of the earmuffs that I had tried out at a shooting range right before calling my parents to ask them if they'd be okay with a $200 dollar purchase, and bought these as kind of a "meh might as well try it out" kind of thing.These are a lifesaver. They work way better than the cheapo noise canceling headphones I had, and I think they work almost as well as actual noise canceling headphones (though I've never used those before).Noise levels it will tune out:- With my bedroom door closed, I can no longer hear my roommates conversations down the hall (unless they start screaming), the TV down the hall, the shower that touches my door, or even music being played at full blast in the shower. These were all big distractions before I got these headphones- It completely tunes out the filter from my fish tank,-if I forget that these are on, my music ends up being at least three notches higher (out of the 16 notch volume bar on my macbook pro).- my phone vibrating- I havn't tried this on a plane yet, but I imagine they'd work wellNoise levels it ill not tune out (but it will reduce)- Friends standing right behind me and asking me why I'm wearing giant earmuffs- people knocking on my door- music from my downstairs neighbors that quite literally shakes my floor every friday night. This is actually why I got the earmuffs, and although they reduce the level of noise, I can still hear the music (it doesn't cut out the base very well), and my floor shaking is still quite distracting. Oh well, can't have my cake and eat it too I guess.Either way, if you're a student who likes it quiet, buy these! Only downside to these is that they're not the most comfortable thing to have on (eating with these on is pretty awkward), and they look pretty big and bulky. People will ask questions if you're wearing these outside of your room. Best combination of NRR and comfort I have found so far.
I now own 3 of these that I use while chain sawing, mowing, shooting and using loud tools in my garage.I own several other brands of muffs (5) and these are the best yet.All 3 came from the factory set at the smallest setting available, which would hurt my head if I tried to wear them at that setting. These muffs are adjustable to fit any size head.Each side adjusts 1 3/8 inches. So you have a total range of adjustment of 2 3/4 inches.I have a large head (hat size) and with only using less than half of the available adjustment range, the band does not even TOUCH the top of my head.When adjusted all the way to the largest setting, I can place my hand on top of my head, under the band.The adjustment is located where the wire goes into the plastic sleeves on each ear cup. The wire slides in and out of the plastic sleeve. It is a friction fit and requires a little effort to move.Nothing you can buy (portable and convenient) at any price will totally eliminate all ambient sound. Sound vibrations arrive at the inner ear via 3 general pathways;1) through the ear canal2) through bone conduction through the bones of the head3) through soft tissues from the torso up through the neck.Excessive noise is defined as 85-90 decibels or more over an 8 hour period.These earmuffs REDUCE sound from hearing damaging levels to less damaging/tolerable levels.The NRR of 30 is excellent and about the highest you can buy for muffs. (33 is the highest available for any single ear protector device, plugs or muffs)Effectiveness will vary due to amount of hair, eyeglasses ect.. under the muffs. NRR are based on test subjects in a controlled lab environmentExample:A chainsaw produces about 100 dB of sound which will damage your hearing. These muffs (NRR 30) will reduce that sound to about 70 dB, which will not damage your hearing.Normal conversation is about 60 dB.You will still clearly hear the chainsaw run, but it will not damage your hearing.A whisper is about 30 dB, so they might eliminate a whisper...You can wear a combination of ear plugs and muffs for more protection. I often wear Howard Leight MAX1 Earplugs (NRR of 33) under these muffs when shooting or using very loud tools for a long period of time. Even with the combo of muffs (NRR 30) and plugs (NRR 33) the total NRR is only about 36 or maybe 37.I would highly recommend these muffs, both for the NRR of 30 and the comfort, as compared to many other brands of muffs that I own.I only wish I had these 50 years ago when I started doing things that would damage my hearing.

Blocks sound very well
These are great for using loud equipment like lawnmowers, and they block sound very well. There are different models available, and models like this one that are rated NRR 30 (and up) are basically the maximum blocking variety. There are apparently ways for more blocking of sound, like using multiple blocking methods, but these already block so much sound that I don't see a need. I don't have a wife, though.Note: Depending on your head shape, and if you wear glasses with thick arms, the glasses' thick arms may push earmuffs away from your head, letting in sound. That happens to me sometime, but I absolutely need my glasses. I am not sure if any earmuffs have a way around this.

Very good hearing protection!
I really like these earmuffs! I wanted something to wear over my noise cancelling earbuds while mowing. These really fill the bill!I have a fairly small cranium and I wear glasses. These two things alone provide a challenge when fitting hearing protection.1) Many muffs are just too big and do not stay in position. These have a perfect amount of tension and adjust 'short' enough to cup the ears properly.2) The padding on many are too stiff and do not conform around eyeglass frames (mine are wire and sit close to my temples) One would think this not to be a problem, but many do not seal very well, admitting quite a bit of noise. These form an excellent seal and are still very comfortable.3) Some ear cups are too compact to accommodate earbuds without pressing them into the ear canals, causing discomfort over time. These are quite spacious. They do not have the sleekest profile, but for my application, they are perfect. They also relieve me of worry over losing my rather expensive Apple Airbuds while zipping around on my big zero turn or tractor!I hope this is helpful to others. The topic of these two products combined seemed to be lacking.I also want to say, that even without earbuds, the amount of noise reduction these provide is excellent! With the noise cancellation, the noise level on the mower is less than that of a really happy cat purring!

Comparison to Bilsom Thunder T3
I won't reiterate what others have said, but just make a couple pertinent points:You're likely comparing (and if not, you should) this Peltor headset along with the top=of-the-line Bilsom: the Bilsom Thunder T3 is the best constructed headphone/ear protection I own. A have several by Peltor, and the one most comparable to the T3 is the Peltor H10A. The Peltor is not as well made; the over-head piece on the T3 is much better--it actually clicks into place and does not move. The Peltors are all wire, and move easily. I would say, if many people are going to use same headset (such as different shifts at a worksite), Peltor might be better as it's easily adjusted by just sliding on the wire. The T3 are better at a single set for your head size and it does not move.The Peltor H10A might actually be a tad more comfortable for my head hat size at 7 3/4. The T3 is tight, and cannot be adjusted out for looseness. I'd rather wear the Peltor H10A for a protracted period of time than the Bilsom T3. If my head were smaller, I think the T3 would be fine.The Bilsom T3 blocks sound better than any Peltor I have owned (I have owned about three models of Peltors). It's as simple as that.Both have, because of the larger ear cup size (compared to lower profile, usually less protective for hearing, models) the ability to keep your head straight when dozing on an airplane. You know how people use the cervical neck pillow U-shaped things so they won't kink their neck to one side when they sleep on a plane? Well, you won't need that with a high-profile larger cup size sound protection like these---they stick out from your head enough that you will sleep with head straight ahead regardless. This is a "plus". And no need the lousy "noise cancellation" headsets for six times the price, plus batteries to charge, etc. These are great for air flight.The Bilsom T3 is slightly wider on each ear cup than the Peltor H10A. Both, however, are not good to wear around your neck when not in use. The ear cups are too large and they will hit your chin. If you plan to wear and remove to "dangle" around your neck, like a rifleman might, you;d better stick with the lower-profile "shooter" type headsets...these are too wide. They will hit your chin, unless you have a super long neck.The weight of each is about the same. I'd give the nod to the Bilsom for sound protection capability and quality of build (the wire overhead piece on Peltors can get stretched or bent--no chance with Bilsom) over the Peltor high-end models, having owned both. But, with my head size at 7 3/4, and certainly if your noggin is larger than mine, you'd better stick with Peltor. The wire can be bent to accomodate the jumbo cranium better than Bilsom. Thanks.

Let's start by stating the obvious:Would you do DIY work without safety glasses ? NO.Would you stand near a fighter jet without hearing protection for 5min: NOOOOO!! (what did you say?)Not many people know that ear damage is CUMULATIVE. Like in: oops I've used my credit, I'm irremediably deaf now.Seriously, get ear protection. Now I've searched hours the right product, I went for this Peltor, and then I was so pleased I bought a second one to put in another area of the house so that I would never, ever, even saw during 10 seconds without that on my ears. 461 good reviews and counting, I mean, a guy working in an airport praising this thing, what else do you want? an astronaut saying he didn't noticed they took off because he couldn't hear a thing with that?Again, do yourself a favor, get a pair.I use it for mowing, mulching leaves, hedging, and also woodworking. The latter encompasses the obvious miter/jig/circular saws, but also hammering i.e.: repeated impact, not continuous humming. Make no mistake, it's not because it's short that it's inoffensive. I never used a nailer/stapler, but I read the impact noise was tremendously high whereas extremely short so that you don't realise you're hurting yourself each bang.The muffs are comfortable but yes after a couple hours you'll sweat, but can somebody tell me who doesn't sweat after an intensive work outside or in a shop? should one complain because sweat is going onto one's Tee shirt?One word of caution: the fit needs to be good, so yes the glasses branches indeed are an issue. To solve the problem, I bought the also excellent Dewalt DPG82-11C Concealer Clear Anti-Fog Dual Mold Safety Goggle. the combination is great. I can even put up my 3M Multi Gas/Vapor Respirator Assembly 5306, Large, 12 per Case on with the two.This is the combination I used to drum sand 3000sqft of solid wood floor and I was perfectly protected.I don't wear prescription glasses, so I would say go for contact lenses for the reason above, the Peltors will fit easily any, even vaguely human, head shape,without any effort, but glasses branches will interfere a bit for sure, or at least they will hurt you in the end because the peltors, or any earmuff for that matter, will press on the ears+branches.Don't skip safety and comfort though, that's one good thing about our modern times. The right equipment is available, and cheap.I never tried to put in earplugs plus the peltor on, that should be insanely isolating, or that could be a solution to improve a not so perfect fit with glasses, I don't know, but it's feasible.That'll be worth a review update.Be safe

the 30 decibel protection earmuffs work great. product came in simple brand box, no manual, & no plastic wrap containers - nice, since that may have saved me on shipping weight charges...etc...here's a great tip regarding this product, which I discovered accidentaly through me getting so upset with the loud noise the apartments above, below, & next to me made, that I literally slambed the old same type earmuffs off my head(which explains why I had to order a new set through Amazon) on my apartment floor, that's how teed off I was at the excrutiating noise. the noise was so excessive, it vibrated right through the earmuffs.b4 I go on, note that no earmuffs,regardless of how high in decibel protection, will provide 100% soundproof from surrounding noise. there will always be some type of noise, but it's nice that this can be diminished with quality brand as this type of earmuffs.continueing:upon busting up old earmuffs, the force was such, that it busted open the earmuffs , which revealed the extra foam pad that hugs the inner black plastic lining. this is not 2b confused with the "visible" inner grey plastic lining u c when cleaning the gray foam pads, which sit on the "visible" grey plastic linings.the extra foam pad i'm talking about is usually hid from the regular inside view when cleaning the grey foam pads. to access this hidden foam pad, open gently the earmuffs by gently pulling out the earmuff handles away from usual black earpeaces. then, take 4 fingers of ur hands(the other hand holding back of black earpieces for good grip) & pull on inside lip directly under the padded ear rim. this should expose the red unpadded lip around each of black earpieces. this procedure should allowe u to remove usual "visible" grey inside plastic cups which hold inside cleanable grey foam pads.& here's the tip(fianally):remove the grey inside plastic cups, giving u access to white "hidden" oval foam pieces. after thorough cleaning, stack the grey foam pieces on top of the white thin foam pieces. this should make ur newly "slightly" altered earmuffs lighter, but "maybe," more "soundproof," due to the two foam pieces sitting on top of each other. then, re - snap together the "padded" ear rims with the exposed red ear rims. then, re - attach the headpiece & earmuff handles.above procedure is a recommendation from me, & worth a try if u like experimenting, but extra soundproofing "not guaranteed."

The over-the-head design is stable and secure. The noise reduction is impressive - I can work in loud environments without any discomfort. Build quality is exceptional and they're very durable. AMAZING for work
We had an older pair of these before they went to the glossy black casing, and have used those for the better part of the last decade or more, and they worked amazing. The reason for getting new ones is heck- after over a decade and just starting to have the surround padding for the ears get a little hard and torn, they are a steal of a deal for the price you pay to protect your hearing.The work we do:Table Saws, Band Saws, Power Sanders, Planers, Leaf Blowers, Chainsaws, Rifle and Shotgun Shooting (more fun, less work...), Lawn Mowers, Jack Hammers. Basically anything construction- these have been used for- even the occasional night when my dad with poor hearing cranks up the tv to hurting volumes to my sensitive hearing- I have nothing to say but good things.They work amazing at deadening outside sound, and for me- I can still hear people talking but the really noise-damaging sounds are drastically cut down. If you want to listen to music with these, I highly recommend a pair of sound-isolating ear buds, and NOT the iPhone/iPod standard ones. When I do this- my volume is nearly kept at the minimum volume for most tasks, and sometimes even that was too loud- so the good news being, you can hear music with a GOOD set of speakers, keep the volume low to avoid hearing loss, and at the same time- get the comfort and added protection from outside sounds with these. The in-ear work better than around the ear, however.I have also used these with (and they recommend) thin-sided glasses, safety or otherwise (I use some Oakley Antix) and (especially on the new pair with newer padding around the ears) they still cut out exterior sound to a really good degree, nearly the same as without the exterior interference. Highly recommended so long as you don't mind keeping a hat off. If you want one- get an oversize hat or a cheapie you don't mind getting bent a little out of shape from the over-head hearing as the wires stick out about a quarter to half-inch from your skin.Also- I have a HUGE head (translation: I wear extra large hats and not all one-size fits all hats fit me.. I think I was 7.25-7.5 on a fitted cap when I played little league baseball...) and very large ears (maybe 3" top to bottom..? they run in the family, oh well..) but these still have expansion space to fit on even larger heads and my ears fit inside the cups PERFECTLY. Unless you are part of the 1% of the population with a freakishly large (no offense) head or ears, they should work perfectly for you, so hopefully that answers that question if you're wondering how they work for larger heads.The only disadvantage I see is with shooting sports, particularly rifle and shotgun. They stick out enough to the point that if you sight down the barrel- they interfere and get pushed out of the way by the rifle/shotgun stock. Would def. recommend a slim set. I went with some Howard Leight ones that work pretty well on battery-operated silencing, however they are not so great if you sweat. These are basically waterproof and don't get sticky like my Howard Leight ones when dry and are easy to maintain. Both are really great quality but bang for the buck... these can not be beat. And now I sound like I work for em. Wish I did- I need to pay off some debt, haha..

If you just want to shut out the noise at she shooting range like I do these are for you. I have tried many different electronic shooting muffs from inexpensive to $300 and none of them work as far as I am concerned, they all let the shooting noise in. not a perfect fit for a small head but makes the world fall away
I am sensitive to noise, and a friend with similar issues let me try on a pair of these when we were visiting the zoo together. Everything just stopped, it was magical. I don't know how I've been living without these. They're challenging to fall asleep in because of the bulk but wow they've let me wind down so fast.On my small head they are a little big, so gravity makes them sit a little low and put some pressure on my jaw which isn't great. When in a good position there's about a finger's width gap between the headband and my head. Eventually I hope I'll find a smaller one but I couldnt bear to return these.I also bought the 3m Peltor X1A in green because I like green and wasnt paying attention to the NRR. Those are more comfortable and lower profile, though still too big, but they don't block out as much sound. I probably should have bought the chartreuse ones but oh well, I plan to keep both.These don't fully block out sound, I can still have a conversation with them on if I focus and I can hear alarms etc., but the irritating background noises like the whine of the fridge or neighbors is just gone. For sleep I plan to keep using my Flents Super Sleep ear plugs since I'm a side sleeper but so far I'm finding I wear these pretty frequently throughout the day whenever I want a break from sound. They make my headaches just evaporate and I feel so much less stressed.They are warm; I think these would be harder to wear in the summer.
