3M 8247 R95 β€” what the grade means

The 3M 8247 R95 is a NIOSH-approved R95 filtering facepiece. The letter is about oil, not efficiency β€” N is not oil-resistant, R is oil-resistant for one shift, P is oil-proof β€” and the number is filtration efficiency against the test aerosol.

Also listed as 3m 8247, 3m 8247 r95 oil resistant respirator, 3m 8247 masks, 3m 8247 r95, 3m 8247 r95 mask, 3m 8247 r95 particulate respirator. Specifications below are read from the manufacturer record for this SKU.

Why the protection factor is 10, whatever the grade

Under OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 a filtering facepiece is a half-mask and carries an assigned protection factor of 10 β€” rated to ten times the permissible exposure limit and no further. A R95 does not buy a higher ceiling than an N95; it buys better filtration inside the same tenfold envelope. Above 10Γ— the limit you need a reusable half-mask or a full-face respirator at APF 50.

Buy it only if you can fit-test it

Safety note. A filtering facepiece filters air; it does not supply it. Never use one in an IDLH atmosphere, in an oxygen-deficient space, or against an unknown contaminant β€” those require supplied air or an SCBA. Within its limits, 1910.134(f) still requires fit testing before first use and annually, and facial hair crossing the sealing surface disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator: a correctly chosen R95 on a bearded face protects nobody.

Does the valve change the protection?

No. The exhalation valve vents warm, humid air, which makes long wear tolerable and reduces eyewear fogging. Filter, NIOSH rating and APF are unchanged. What it does change is direction: exhaled air leaves unfiltered, so a valved respirator gives no source control and is commonly excluded from sterile fields.

What "nuisance level" relief actually is

Odour relief, not protection. The light carbon layer carries no NIOSH gas rating and must never be specified where a real organic-vapour or acid-gas exposure exists. That needs cartridges on a reusable respirator plus a written change-out schedule.

Put it on properly, and seal-check it every time

A user seal check is required before every use under 1910.134 Appendix B-1, and it is not the same thing as the annual fit test. Cup the facepiece in your hand with the straps hanging free, hold it against the face, and take the straps over the crown β€” never around the ears or over a hood. The lower strap sits below the ears, the upper strap high on the back of the head, and the nose clip is molded with two hands rather than pinched with one, which is the single most common error and the one that leaks.

Then check it. Positive check: cover the front with both hands and exhale gently β€” the facepiece should bulge slightly with no air escaping around the edge or the nose. Negative check: inhale sharply β€” it should collapse slightly toward the face and hold. Any leak means reseat and repeat; if it will not seal, the size or model is wrong for that face and no amount of strap tension fixes it. Facial hair on the sealing surface cannot be seal-checked away.

Buy if / skip if

  • Buy if your exposure is at or below 10Γ— the permissible limit, you can fit-test, and the contaminant matches the R95 grade.
  • Buy if you want a disposable you can issue by the box rather than maintain, clean and store.
  • Skip if oil mist is present and the grade starts with N β€” that is the common and expensive mistake.
  • Skip if anyone wearing it has facial hair on the sealing surface, or the exposure exceeds APF 10.
  • Skip if you need protection against a gas or vapour β€” a particulate filter does nothing for it.

Frequently asked questions

What does the R95 grade mean?

The letter is oil resistance β€” N is not oil-resistant, R lasts a single shift, P is oil-proof β€” and the number is filtration efficiency against the test aerosol.

What is the assigned protection factor?

Ten. OSHA 1910.134 Table 1 assigns any filtering facepiece an APF of 10, so it is rated to ten times the permissible exposure limit and no further, whatever the filter grade.

Do I need a fit test?

Yes, wherever a respirator is required. 1910.134(f) calls for fit testing before first use and at least annually, and facial hair on the sealing surface disqualifies it.

Does it protect against gases or vapours?

No. This is a particulate filter. Gases and vapours need cartridges on a reusable respirator, with a written change-out schedule.

What does the nuisance-level relief do?

It reduces odour and nothing more. There is no NIOSH gas rating attached to it, so it must never be specified where a real vapour exposure exists.

Can I use it where oil mist is present?

Only if the grade starts with R or P. An N-series filter is not oil-resistant, and using one in an oil-mist atmosphere is the most common selection error.

How long can I wear it?

Until it is damaged, soiled, deformed, or breathing resistance rises noticeably β€” and it is discarded after use in any area where reuse is not permitted by the written program.

Is a higher number always better?

It filters better but does not raise the exposure ceiling. An N100 and an N95 share the same APF of 10; the difference is margin inside that envelope, not a higher limit.

Does the exhalation valve change protection?

No. The valve vents warm, humid air for comfort and fog control. Filter, rating and APF are unchanged β€” but exhaled air leaves unfiltered, so it gives no source control.

Is this the same as a KN95?

No. KN95 is a Chinese standard. This carries a NIOSH approval under 42 CFR Part 84, which is a different test and a different approval regime.

Can I wear it with glasses?

Yes, though fogging is the usual complaint. A valved model vents warm air and reduces it; the seal, not the lens, is what determines protection.

What replaces it when it is used up?

A disposable facepiece is discarded, not cleaned. If you are getting through boxes, price a reusable half-mask with replaceable filters against cost per shift.

If you’re looking for a mask that eliminates odor this is what you need. I’ve been using them for over 25 years in the painting business and they truly stop organic compounds and heavy duty smell smells. They’re a little pricey because they’re 3M, but they are well worth it. You can get multiple uses out of one.

Overpriced but no substitute for shop use. Fabric elastic bands last far longer than the generic XXX95 rubber bands made now.

Great product, highly effective at removing most volatile gases and particles. I just wish they made a version with an exhaust valve.

Too stiff for a good fit. Hydrocarbons are not filtered at all. AND, 3M has a no return policy.

I bought these since I figured I ought to have some 95+ disposables just in case. They’re just about the easiest to breathe in 95+ mask I’ve ever worn, and as an R mask (instead of the more conventional N masks) light oil aerosol protection is useful to me for hobby use in my workshop as well. I’ve been wearing one as my primary mask for several weeks now, and it’s hanging together surprisingly well for a 95 mask, much longer than I expected for a disposable. It’s also one of the best-fitting disposable masks I’ve ever tried, giving a great seal. Edited to add: It turns out that the filter material used in these versus an N95 is a more expensive material, and that's why it's so much easier to breathe in them.

I have a neighbor who installed an Outdoor Wood Boiler 150 feet from our home (currently "grandfatered" after the town decided to regulate). When the wind is from the NW, the acrid smoke, laden with fine, carcinogenic particles, envelopes our home and often finds its way inside as well. Our very lives are literally dictated by the direction of the wind. When we find it necessary to do chores or otherwise venture out on "smoke" days (~ 80% of the winter here in northern Wisconsin) we found that the 3M 8247 Particle Respirator provides the very best filtering of any of a dozen or so products we've tried. I was told that a rule of thumb is "if there is any smell ... there are particles". When using a properly fitted 3M 8247, there is no smell whatsoever. For information on OWB hazards, do a web search using "OWB Hazards" and "smoke particle hazards" as subjects.

I purchased this mask in order to block fragrances, smoke and chemical fumes. This mask does not fully block any them but, it does cut down significantly reduce on how strongly I perceive them. (Note: To block any of these things fully requires filter cartridges with many more layers of carbon.) * I was able to breathe in a car when surrounded by people cloaked in 2nd hand smoke (when without the mask I was miserable). * It's gotten so one cannot go a retail shop without being ambushed by candles, perfumes, or other smelly products (e.g. specialty soaps). I was able to peruse gift shops at the airport without pain despite large displays with heavily scented items. * The mask helps when traveling. In some places it seems like they clean rooms or vehicles with undiluted bleach or some other similarly potent concoction. This masks makes it so I can occupy the space until the fumes wear off. Gripes: I have two issues with this mask -- it's itchy and the straps are too tight. After a few hours, it gets to where I have to remove the mask periodically to rub at my skin due to the itching. Separately, the mask can cause headaches because the straps are so tight and cannot be adjusted. Overall, I'm thrilled to have this mask available to me, but I wish it was more comfortable to wear.
