How do you choose a hard hat type and class?

Short answer: choose the Type from the direction the impact can arrive, then the Class from the electrical hazard. The two are independent — a Type II shell can be Class G, E or C, and a Class E shell can be Type I or Type II. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 defines both, and OSHA requires head protection meeting a recognised consensus standard under 29 CFR 1910.135 and 1926.100.

Class G, Class E and Class C

Read the voltages correctly. 2,200 V and 20,000 V are proof-test values used to verify the shell's dielectric integrity. They are not working-voltage ratings and they do not authorise work at those voltages. Task voltage limits come from the electrical safe work practices in your program, not from the hat.

Does a hard hat have an expiry date?

What is the difference between Type I and Type II hard hats?

Type I hard hats are tested for impact to the top of the head only. Type II hard hats add lateral impact protection, meaning the shell and suspension are tested for blows to the front, back and sides as well as the crown.

What does Class E mean on a hard hat?

Class E is the electrical class in ANSI/ISEA Z89.1, proof-tested at 20,000 volts. It indicates the shell passed a dielectric test at that level; it is not a working-voltage rating and does not authorise energised work at 20,000 volts.

What is the difference between Class G and Class E?

Class G is proof-tested at 2,200 volts and Class E at 20,000 volts. Both indicate dielectric performance in a laboratory test. Class C is not tested for electrical protection at all.

Are vented hard hats safe around electricity?

No. Vented shells are Class C, which carries no electrical protection. If any electrical contact is credible on the task, a vented shell is the wrong choice regardless of how much cooler it is to wear.

Do hard hats expire?
