How do you choose between a Class A and Class B first aid kit?

Short answer: match the kit class to the injury profile of the work, not the size of the budget. Class A covers the common injuries of lower-risk settings; Class B carries higher quantities plus a splint and a tourniquet for higher-risk environments. Is there such a thing as an OSHA-approved first aid kit?

No. OSHA does not approve, certify, or endorse any product. A listing that says OSHA-approved is describing the manufacturer's own positioning against the adequacy duty, not a government certification.

How many first aid kits does a workplace need?

Federal OSHA sets no kit-per-employee ratio. The widely used planning benchmark is one station per 25 employees or per 300 feet of separation, whichever needs more, plus one per crew on dispersed construction work.

What does a Class B kit add over Class A?

Higher minimum quantities across the fill, plus two item types Class A does not carry: a splint and a tourniquet.

What changes on a construction site?

1926.50 adds hard duties: a weatherproof container with individually sealed packages, a check before the kit goes out on each job and at least weekly on the job, and a certified first-aid-trained person on site when no clinic or hospital is reasonably accessible.

Does this selector replace a hazard assessment?

No. It produces a defensible starting point from your setting, headcount and hazards. The site-specific hazard assessment governs the final fill, and unusual hazards can require supplies no class minimum includes.
