What to check before you buy

Selection starts with the published rating, not the marketing headline. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176, materials handling comes down to secure storage, clear aisles, and equipment used within its rated capacity — match the working load to the manufacturer's number, check the floor and route the wheels will actually roll on, and treat any listing that hides its rating as a reason to keep shopping.

Check which capacity convention the listing uses

Shelving capacity is published two different ways, and they differ by the number of tiers. Wire and NSF-style racks are usually rated per shelf; boltless garage racks are commonly rated as a total across all tiers — a REIBII unit headlined 3,200 lb, for example, is 640 lb per tier and 3,200 lb for the whole unit. Never assume the headline number is per shelf unless the manufacturer says so. Load evenly, keep the heaviest items low, and stacking everything heavy on one beam is still the usual cause of failure.

Anchoring and tip-over

Tall, narrow units need to be anchored to the wall or floor. Height-to-depth ratio is what drives tip-over risk, and loading the top levels first makes it worse.

Decking type

Wire decking allows sprinkler flow through the rack and does not trap debris; solid decking supports small items but can obstruct overhead sprinklers.

Damage inspection

Bent uprights and deformed beams have lost capacity that cannot be judged by eye. Damaged rack components are replaced, not straightened.
