What to check before you buy
Buy to the published rating, not the headline. Check the manufacturer's stated capacity, dimensions and materials against the job you actually do, and treat any listing that will not publish its numbers as a reason to keep looking.
- A bungee is not a rated tie-down
- Elastic cords carry no working load limit and cannot be counted toward cargo securement. Federal cargo-securement math (aggregate WLL versus cargo weight) applies to rated straps, chain and webbing — never to bungees. Use a bungee to hold a cover or keep light items from shifting; use a rated ratchet strap to secure a load.
- Hook and anchor point are the failure points
- The cord rarely fails first — the hook straightens or the anchor lets go, and the stored energy releases along the cord path. Inspect hook throats for opening and check that the anchor is a real structural point, not a trim clip.
- Rubber condition and UV age
