Clear Dura-streme Lens

The Uvex S3970D Stealth OTG Safety Goggles with Clear Dura-Streme lens deliver professional-grade eye protection specifically engineered for workers who wear prescription eyewear on the job. As an Over-The-Glasses (OTG) goggle, the S3970D features a larger-than-standard frame cavity that comfortably accommodates a wide range of prescription spectacle frames — eliminating the discomfort, lens distortion, and compliance failures that occur when standard-fit goggles are forced over eyeglasses. The Dura-Streme dual-coat lens treatment applies anti-fog and scratch-resistant protection to both the interior and exterior lens surfaces, providing all-day optical clarity in humid, high-temperature, and physically demanding industrial environments. Compliant with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 and meeting OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 requirements, the S3970D belongs on any procurement list where prescription-wearing workers face impact, splash, or particulate hazards.

Key Features

  • OTG Frame Design: Enlarged interior cavity sized explicitly to fit over standard prescription spectacle frames without pressure points or lateral squeeze — the defining difference between the S3970D and the standard-fit S3960D Stealth goggle.
  • Dura-Streme Dual-Coat Lens: Scratch-resistant and anti-fog coating applied to both the inside and outside polycarbonate lens surfaces — double the protection of single-side coatings and longer service life in abrasive environments.
  • Indirect Ventilation System: Perimeter vents allow continuous airflow to reduce fogging while blocking the direct pathway for liquid splashes, chemical mists, and fine particulates — essential in chemical, pharmaceutical, and wet-process industrial settings.
  • Soft, Flexible Frame Body: The Stealth platform uses a pliable thermoplastic frame that conforms to facial contours, forming a secure seal even over the temples of prescription eyewear without creating pressure hot spots.
  • Adjustable Head Strap: Single-piece elastic strap with easy-slide adjustment fits a wide range of head sizes and accommodates hoods, hard hat suspensions, and hearing protection without sacrificing fit stability.
  • Clear Polycarbonate Lens: High-impact, optically clear polycarbonate provides excellent visual acuity for indoor and mixed-light environments with inherent UV protection.
  • ANSI Z87.1 Certified: Tested and rated for high-impact protection, optical quality, and UV transmission requirements under the current ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 standard.

Detailed Description

The Uvex Stealth OTG platform was engineered in response to a persistent, well-documented problem in industrial safety: standard-fit goggles placed over prescription spectacles create pressure, distortion, and facial seal gaps that compromise both comfort and protection. Workers forced into this situation frequently push goggles up or remove them entirely, creating exactly the exposure the PPE was designed to prevent. The S3970D addresses this at the design level by building the frame cavity with the extra depth and lateral clearance needed to seat cleanly over most standard spectacle frames.

Once seated, the flexible thermoplastic body of the Stealth platform conforms around the temples and nose bridge of the underlying eyewear, distributing contact pressure evenly rather than concentrating it at the spectacle temples — the most common discomfort point in competing OTG designs. The result is a goggle that prescription-wearing workers actually keep on, which is the most important performance criterion any PPE can meet.

The Dura-Streme coating system is a meaningful upgrade over single-side anti-fog treatments. Most economy goggle lenses receive anti-fog treatment only on the interior surface, where condensation typically forms. The exterior surface is left with basic scratch resistance only. In real working conditions — where workers wipe lenses with gloved hands, where airborne grit contacts the outer lens, and where lens surfaces are repeatedly cleaned — exterior coating wear is significant. Dura-Streme's dual-side application means the lens continues performing visually after the kind of routine contact that degrades single-coat lenses.

Indirect ventilation on the S3970D is achieved through baffled perimeter ports that allow thermal convection to pull warm, humid air away from the lens interior without creating a direct channel for liquid or aerosol entry. This design is the correct choice for any environment where splash, mist, or chemical vapor exposure is possible — laboratories, chemical processing floors, pharmaceutical manufacturing, wet grinding, and similar applications. Environments that are strictly dust-without-liquid may use direct ventilation goggles, but indirect is the conservative, universally appropriate choice for mixed-hazard workplaces.

Compliance and Standards

The Uvex S3970D is tested and certified to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, the American National Standard for Occupational and Educational Personal Eye and Face Protection Devices. This standard covers high-velocity impact resistance, optical clarity requirements, UV transmission limits, and lens distortion criteria. Employers specifying goggles under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 (General Industry eye protection requirements) should confirm that selected eyewear bears ANSI Z87.1 marking — the S3970D meets this requirement. The goggle's indirect ventilation also aligns with requirements for splash-hazard environments as outlined in OSHA and ANSI guidance for chemical handling operations.

Real-World Benefits

Safety managers who have deployed the S3970D on mixed-prescription workforces consistently report two outcomes: fewer goggle removal incidents during shift (because comfort is acceptable) and fewer complaints of fogging causing work interruptions. The Dura-Streme dual-coat lens holds up through full shifts in foundry adjacent areas, food processing environments where steam is present, and laboratory settings where temperature differentials between work areas are common. For procurement managers, the OTG S3970D simplifies stock management — rather than maintaining separate goggle SKUs for prescription and non-prescription workers, a single OTG model covers both populations with appropriate comfort for each.

Applications and Use Cases

  • Chemical Manufacturing: Indirect ventilation + sealed face contact makes the S3970D appropriate for chemical splash zones; OTG design covers lab-coat workers who routinely wear prescription eyewear.
  • Pharmaceutical Production: Cleanroom and production floor workers with prescription glasses need a compliant OTG solution — the S3970D's indirect ventilation and complete seal address both PPE and contamination control requirements.
  • Laboratory Environments: Research labs, quality control labs, and industrial test facilities where prescription-wearing technicians handle liquids, solvents, or biological materials.
  • Metalworking and Machining: Flying particle risk plus prescription eyewear is common in precision machining environments; the S3970D covers both hazard types.
  • General Industrial / Multi-Hazard Sites: As the OTG variant of Uvex's most popular goggle platform, the S3970D is a logical standard-issue choice for sites with a diverse workforce including prescription-eyewear wearers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Uvex S3970D and the S3960D Stealth goggles?

The S3960D is the standard-fit Stealth goggle designed for workers without prescription eyewear. The S3970D is the OTG (Over-The-Glasses) variant, featuring a physically larger interior cavity to accommodate prescription spectacle frames comfortably. Both share the Dura-Streme dual-coat lens and indirect ventilation, but the S3970D's frame geometry is specifically sized for over-glasses use.

Will the S3970D fit over large or thick prescription frame styles?

The S3970D accommodates most standard and semi-rimless prescription spectacle frames. Very large frames, oversized fashion eyewear, or extremely thick frame profiles may not fit comfortably. The flexible thermoplastic body provides some accommodation, but workers with unusually large spectacle frames should verify fit with a sample unit before bulk procurement.

What does Dura-Streme dual-coat mean, and how is it different from single-side anti-fog?

Dura-Streme is Uvex's coating system that applies both scratch-resistant and anti-fog treatments to both the interior and exterior lens surfaces. Single-side anti-fog coatings treat only the inside surface, leaving the exterior without anti-fog protection. Dura-Streme's dual-coat approach extends lens service life and maintains optical quality through the kind of routine cleaning and incidental contact that rapidly degrades single-coat lenses.

Can the S3970D be used for chemical splash protection?

Yes. The S3970D's indirect ventilation design prevents a direct liquid pathway to the eye while still allowing airflow. This makes it appropriate for chemical splash-risk environments. For extremely aggressive chemical environments with high splash pressure or fine aerosol, a sealed chemical goggle with no ventilation may be more appropriate — consult your chemical hazard assessment.

Is the S3970D OSHA compliant?

The S3970D is ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 certified, which is the standard referenced by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 for general industry eye protection. Employers in general industry and construction who require compliant goggles for prescription-eyewear wearers can specify the S3970D to meet this requirement.

How do I clean Dura-Streme coated lenses without damaging the coating?

Use clean water rinse or a mild lens cleaning solution with a soft, lint-free cloth or lens tissue. Avoid dry wiping with paper towels, shop rags, or abrasive materials. Do not use solvents or alcohol-based cleaners, which can degrade the coating. Proper cleaning technique is the most significant factor in extending Dura-Streme coating service life.

Does the S3970D provide UV protection?

Yes. The clear polycarbonate lens of the S3970D provides UV 400 protection, blocking 99.9% of UV-A and UV-B radiation. This meets the UV transmission requirements of ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 and is appropriate for environments with incidental UV exposure. For extended outdoor UV exposure or welding, additional UV-rated lens protection should be evaluated.

What strap system does the S3970D use, and is it compatible with hard hats?

The S3970D uses a single-piece adjustable elastic head strap that slides for quick sizing adjustment. The elastic strap is compatible with most hard hat suspensions and can be worn over hoods or balaclava liners. Workers wearing hard hats should route the strap under the hard hat brim or use a goggle clip attachment if their hard hat model supports it.

Wonderful safety goggles!
I bought these to protect my eyes during welding from all the flying metal when I'm grinding metal. My main concern was whether or not they would fog up. I was particularly concerned because I sweat a lot while I'm working (welding is hot work). So, I wore these goggles for about 2 hours solid, never taking them off and while sweating a lot. In fact, by the time I had finished my work, the rubber face seal around the goggles was rimmed with sweat.BUT, much to my *GREAT* delight, the goggles NEVER ONCE even *began* to fog up!** EDIT: Since this initial testing, I have actually had the goggles fog up significantly, but I'm not sure why. **For me, that's a critical issue, because while working in all my welding gear, it'd be a huge mess to have to take them off and try to defog them. The goggles have vents on the top and bottom -- perhaps that's how they prevent fogging. BUT, I should point out that there was no noticeable breeze where I was working (I was working indoors), so that means that the goggles can stay fog-free even without a breeze actively blowing through the vents! WOW!I also have a very large head and the goggles fit very comfortably: my head at the browline measures 25.0 inches around using a tape measure. However, I do not wear glasses and I do not have a super thick hairstyle (such as an afro or anything like that). They are also very comfortable to wear and seem very well made. I'm VERY pleased with them!

High quality and great fit.
I'm a welding student, and I purchased this goggles based on a recommendation by a friend who also wears glasses (and for those of us that wear glasses, you all know how much of a pain it can be to find ANY sort of eye protection that works well with your glasses). I will say that I expected this product to be of high quality, but I was blown away by how clean and well made they really are. Very high quality materials, and the fit was amazing. Very well thought out for people that wear glasses: Instead of foam padding around the edges of the frames like on most goggles, these have a soft C-Channel rubber gasket around them that form very easily to my glasses, and seal very well to my face with no issue. I wore these for almost 5 hours straight in class today without any discomfort. The only two gripes about them so far: First, the rubber gasket forms so well around your glasses, that it has a habit of pulling them off when you go to take the goggles off. Second, the ventilation does not work as well as it should for wearing with glasses. It's very humid in this area right now, and I noticed that my glasses fogged up pretty quickly if I was standing still, but cleared up when I started walking (and getting the air circulating through the vents) Other than that, this has been a great purchase, and I will be ordering more UVEX products in the future.

Great goggles - Comfortable, no fogging, but not really OTG
I bought these goggles the next day after I got home from the ER after having a piece of metal embedded in my eye. I don't know how it got in there as I had a cheaper pair of goggles on, but it did. I wanted a pair of goggles that was more comfortable that I wouldn't want to take off as much. These fit the bill! These are comfortable goggles. While I'm not sure I would want to wear them all day, I can wear them much longer than the cheap Harbor Freight goggles I had been using. Amazingly, these do not fog up either. I will sweat inside and have sweat running down the lens, but they don't fog up.I went with the neoprene strap. Personally, if I have to order another pair, I'll try the fabric strap next time. So far these have been great. As for the OTG capability... It seems like these are border line OTG. These will fit over my tinted safety glasses that are more curved and form fitting to my face, but they don't fit over my Rx glasses that are more square by my temples. I would say if you need OTG for Rx glasses, you should probably find another pair as I doubt these will fit.I also ordered the recommended hardshell case to keep these in and that fits these goggles perfectly. Now I can keep them in my tool bag with my grinder and I don't have to worry about them getting scratched.

Excellent Goggles, Excellent Value
I have two pairs of these, one is department-issue for wildland firefighting, the other I bought here on Amazon for use as shop goggles. They have proven to be very durable and very comfortable. The level of fog-up is not bad at all given how much protection they offer from particulate. I have used them around smoke and also with automotive spray guns, and they do a very nice job of keeping fine particles out of your eyes. I don't know how "stealth" these are, you certainly won't be forgetting you have them on, but as full-coverage goggles go, they are fairly low profile. The nose piece sits high enough to dovetail just fine with a 3M respirator, and the top sits low enough to work fine with a helmet. The edges are very nicely contoured which minimizes accidentally knocking them off your face when you go to adjust your helmet or scratch your head.Overall, I am very pleased with these, and think they are a killer value.Note that these are not large enough for prescription glasses to go underneath.

Works for smaller glasses
These work very well over your regular glasses IF you have smaller frames. If you have plastic frames or wider metal frames these may not fit. Also it's impossible to take off the safety glasses without also removing your regular glasses as the fit between the rubber surround on the safety glasses and regular glasses is tight. That said, these are very high quality, impact and scratch resistant and optically clear. Also they are very comfortable to wear for long periods and when worn correctly, do not fog up.

Great product, awful customer support
These are, without question, the most comfortable and clear goggles I've ever worn. The goggles are a five-star product, but Uvex's customer support brings it down to three.Originally, I had a pair with the amber lens in place and decided I'd like to use these for oxyfuel cutting. Airgas told me they couldn't sell just one shade 5 lens; Uvex insisted that the shade 5 lenses must be sold in 10-packs, which cost over $70 at the time.Everywhere I looked online, Uvex distributors were selling the shade 5 lenses only in 10-packs. Unless you're outfitting a commercial workshop or you're too stupid to keep your face out of the fire, you won't need ten lenses. Because the Stealth OTG is so comfortable, I eventually decided to just buy another set of goggles with the shade 5 lens already in place. It's a superior product, but Uvex's customer support is such an utter failure that it forced me to waste money on something I have no use for, just so I could scavenge the one piece I really wanted in the first place. Also of note: the headband on the shade 5 goggles is rubber, while the headband on my amber lens model is much more comfortable fabric. Having the option to choose what you want at the time of purchase would be nice, but again, Uvex isn't interested in providing that kind of service.Would I buy this product again? Not if I can find another comfortable, well-made goggle from a manufacturer who will actually sell me a replacement lens.

Great safety goggles with style
After a lot of research on safety goggles I ended up buying these because of the great reviews and the style. Prior to these I had been using a cheaper pair of safety goggles which were awefull and would completely fog over after a minute of use so I couldnt see what I was doing. I wear perscription glasses and these Uvex goggles fit perfectly over my glasses, they are very comfortable, and best of all dont fog up!!Pros:* Great quality* Comfortable, even for long periods of time* They dont fog up* They are stylish (in a geeky kind of way) and match the 3M 7502 Resperator Mask I bought with them: 3M 7500 Series Reusable Half Facepiece, Model 7502. Size: Medium* Fit over perscription glassesCons:* When taking these off they sometimes pull my perscription glasses with them, not a big deal though.Great goggles, highly recommended and I couldnt be happier with them.

Really good goggles
I purchased these for my chemistry lab classes for this year and they have held up very well. There are times that they will fog up which is irritating, but a common issue that is encountered with all safety goggles. I was hoping that the rubber cushion would prevent the lovely ring that appears after they have been worn for a while, but after a 3 hour lab class with them on the entire time, the red ring was there. I wont hold this against the goggles, as they were comfortable and that in itelf is a step up from the ones that they had available for us to purchase on campus.I had actually left them in my car and my dad saw them when I was home visiting and loved them, so I bought him a pair for when he is doing yardwork to help with wind and other debris from bothering his eyes. They fit around his glasses well and he is very happy with them.

Buy these and be the coolest dork in Chem Lab.
That's what I did... and I am pretty sure I was invited to 100% more parties than I was BEFORE I showed up to lab in these awesome goggles. When you first put them a feeling of superiority washes over you - you know that you are no longer an ordinary lab student. You look cool, like this isn't your first rodeo (if you know what I mean).Basically I purchased them because the craptastic lab goggles that I have been subjected to for about 10 years cut into my nose and leave this ridiculous imprint around my face... It was starting to affect my dating life. It was then that I was introduced to the wonder of Uvex professional safety goggles that just happen to meet my OSHA requirements. I'm married so my dating life really hasn't improved much, but the four eyes jokes have subsided and I don't have blinding headaches after lab (unless I've been sniffing chemicals).Seriously... These goggles are great - they really don't leave huge marks or fog up. I bought a case for them so they don't get scratched up and they have been the best money I have spent on goggles ever.
