Assessed on the manufacturer's published specification and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.

The Rubbermaid Commercial Products 2-Shelf Utility/Service Cart, Medium, Black, Lipped is one of our picks for the utility cart lineup. Everything below comes straight from the manufacturer's published listing - specs, capacities, and dimensions are theirs, not ours.
A service cart turns repeated hand-carries into one rolling trip. Check shelf capacity and wheel type against your floors - non-marking casters for finished floors, larger wheels for thresholds and rough concrete. For loads past a cart's rating, move up to a hand truck or pallet jack.
Key details, quoted from the manufacturer's published listing:
- ADVANCED MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION: High-density structural foam construction makes this two-self rolling cart sturdy, lightweight, and maneuverable; it also wonβt rust, dent, chip or peel.
- PERFECT FOR THE HEAVY LOADS: This service cart with wheels is perfect for transporting materials, supplies, and heavy loads in any environment. Structural foam provides more durability than other materials, offering 500 pounds of storage weight capacity.
- EASY MANEUVERABILITY: Ergonomically designed push cart handle provides optimum hand placement and push height improving control and worker safety. Navigate warehouses, classrooms, loading docks, or stock rooms with ease.
- SPECIALLY DESIGNED WHEELS: 5-inch non-marking thermoplastic rubber swivel casters absorb shock, provide floor surface protection, and quiet operation. Excellent on linoleum, tile, terrazzo, wood, smooth concrete, and carpet.
- PEERLESS CUSTOMIZATION: Molded-in storage compartments, holsters, hooks, and notches, customizable fittings, and easy-access bottom shelf make space for all your tools and keep them close at hand. Built in V-notch holds pipe securely for safe cutting.
- MADE IN USA: Recognized as a βBrand of the Centuryβ, Rubbermaid is one of only 100 companies named as having an impact on the American way of life. Rubbermaid Commercial Products are made in Winchester, Virginia.

What to check before you buy
Selection starts with the published rating, not the marketing headline. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176, materials handling comes down to secure storage, clear aisles, and equipment used within its rated capacity β match the working load to the manufacturer's number, check the floor and route the wheels will actually roll on, and treat any listing that hides its rating as a reason to keep shopping.
- Distributed capacity, not shelf capacity
- Cart ratings are usually the total across all shelves with the load spread evenly. Concentrating weight on one shelf or one corner is what bends frames.
- Caster size against the floor
- Small casters are fine on smooth sealed concrete and terrible over cracks, cords and thresholds. Larger diameter wheels roll over obstacles that stop small ones dead.
- Shelf clearance
- Measure the tallest thing you actually move. Fixed-shelf carts are cheaper; adjustable shelves cost more but survive a change of use.
- Brakes
- A cart that will be loaded while stationary, or used on any slope, needs locking casters. Two locking casters is the usual minimum.
