What to check before you buy

No engine, no exhaust. A battery power station produces no carbon monoxide, so it is the one class of "generator" that is safe to run indoors — the placement and ventilation rules for engine-driven generators do not apply. Size it by watt-hours for runtime and by continuous watts for what it can start, and check whether the chemistry is LiFePO4 (longer cycle life) or NMC.

Capacity in watt-hours versus output in watts

Watt-hours tell you how long it runs; watts tell you what it can run at all. A large battery with a small inverter still cannot start a big motor.

Battery chemistry

LiFePO4 cells typically offer far more charge cycles and better thermal stability than standard lithium-ion, usually at more weight for the same capacity.

Surge rating for motors

Anything with a motor draws several times its running wattage at startup. Check the surge figure, not just continuous output.

Pass-through and recharge time

Recharge speed and whether the unit can charge while supplying load vary widely and matter more than headline capacity for day-to-day use.
