Drager Long Hood PAPR Headtop PAPR Hood X-plore 8500

Short answer: the drager x-plore 8500 long papr hood is covered below on the specifications its own listing publishes, the standards it is certified to, and who it suits.

WC Safety Editorial Pick: The Drager X-plore 8500 Long Hood is the correct headtop for taller workers running the X-plore 8500 PAPR β€” extended coverage at the neck and shoulders ensures the hood sits correctly without pulling or riding up during extended industrial work.

The Drager X-plore 8500 Long Hood is a replacement and accessory hood designed for the Drager X-plore 8500 PAPR system, providing the extended coverage needed for taller workers or operations where maximum neck and shoulder coverage is required. The hood connects to the X-plore 8500 blower via the Drager breathing hose, receiving the 175 L/min of filtered air that maintains positive pressure within the hood. For workers who find standard-length hoods ride up the back during overhead or bending work, the long variant provides the additional drop length that keeps coverage in position.

The X-plore 8500 hood system is part of Drager's broader X-plore 8000 headtop family β€” a range of hard helmets, hoods, and visors all compatible with the X-plore 8500 blower. The long hood is the soft, fabric-based option for workers who prioritize lightweight coverage and do not need the impact protection of a hard helmet headtop. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical processing, and general industrial environments where head impact is not a primary concern, the soft hood provides comfortable full-shift wear at lower weight and heat load than hard headtops.

When specifying hoods for the X-plore 8500 fleet, assess worker height and torso length alongside the task type. Consider the long hood for workers over 6'0" or for those who report coverage issues at the shoulders with standard hoods. The short/standard hood is appropriate for most workers of average height. Having both variants in inventory allows supervisors to fit each worker with the correct size, maintaining the consistent coverage that the X-plore 8500's positive-pressure system is designed to deliver.

Key Features

An air-purifying respirator filters air, it does not supply any. Under 29 CFR 1910.134 no air-purifying respirator may be worn in an atmosphere that is IDLH or oxygen-deficient (below 19.5% oxygen). Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or an SCBA, and no filter or cartridge rating changes that.

  • Full head, face, neck, and shoulder coverage

Works as expected, but...
It doesn't come with any type of hose. The internal air port, is flimsy and likes to hit you in the back of the head for overhead spraying.

Not chemical resistant
First, it is not very comfortable, there is something at my left ear that digs into my head and I can't figure out what it is so, I have to wear a cloth painter's head sock. I don't understand why someone would go to the effort of making something like this and then not use a chemical resistant face shield. it does not stand up to any solvents. so it is not good for painting.

Drager X-plore 8500 Long PAPR Hood

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Drager X-plore 8500 Long Hood and Short Hood?
The long hood provides extended coverage at the neck and shoulders, suitable for taller workers. The short hood is the standard-length version for average to shorter workers. Select based on worker height and whether shoulder coverage gaps are observed during use.
Is the long hood compatible with the X-plore 8500 PAPR?
Yes. The Drager X-plore 8500 Long Hood is designed specifically for use with the X-plore 8500 PAPR blower, connecting via the Drager breathing hose.
Does the long hood come with the breathing hose?
No. The breathing hose is part of the X-plore 8500 PAPR kit. The hood connects to the hose that comes with the blower system.
Is the long hood suitable for workers over 6 feet tall?
Yes. The long variant is specifically designed to provide appropriate coverage without riding up on taller workers. Shorter workers may find the extra length uncomfortable or creating excess drape.
Does the Drager X-plore 8500 Long Hood protect against chemical splash?
The hood provides coverage against light aerosols and splash. For direct chemical splash hazards, evaluate the hood material's chemical resistance against your specific agent and consider adding a chemical-resistant coverall.
How often should I replace the X-plore 8500 Long Hood?
Replace when visually contaminated, physically damaged, or per your facility's scheduled replacement program. For high-contamination environments, replace at the end of each shift or task.
Is the X-plore 8500 Long Hood made from low-linting material?
Drager's X-plore 8500 hoods are designed for industrial environments including pharmaceutical use. Confirm low-lint specifications with Drager if your facility has strict particle shedding requirements.
Can I use the long hood in a Zone 1 or Zone 2 hazardous location?
The hood itself is not intrinsically rated, but compatibility depends on the blower unit used. The X-plore 8500 blower's intrinsic safety rating, if any, determines suitability for Zone 1/Zone 2 applications.
How do I clean the X-plore 8500 Long Hood?
Follow Drager's cleaning and decontamination instructions for the specific hood material and your facility's hazard profile. Allow the hood to dry completely before storage.
Is the long hood NIOSH approved?
The X-plore 8500 Long Hood is part of the NIOSH-approved Drager X-plore 8500 PAPR system. The approval covers the complete system configuration including the approved hood and filter combination.
What is the field of vision like in the Drager long hood?
The long hood features a wide-vision visor panel providing broad horizontal visibility appropriate for industrial work tasks. The extended length does not reduce the visor panel size.
