What to check before you buy
- Qualitative versus quantitative
- Qualitative testing relies on the wearer detecting a test agent and is limited to respirators with an assigned protection factor of 10 or less. Quantitative testing measures fit numerically and is required above that.
- Test agent and sensitivity screening
- Bitrex and saccharin protocols begin with a sensitivity screening to confirm the subject can taste the agent at all. Skipping it invalidates the test.
- Annual requirement
- OSHA 1910.134 requires fit testing before initial use, whenever a different facepiece is used, and at least annually thereafter.
- Medical evaluation comes first
- A medical evaluation is required before fit testing or respirator use. It is not optional and cannot be done after the fact.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative fit testing?
Qualitative is a pass/fail test based on whether the wearer detects a test agent. Quantitative uses an instrument to measure leakage numerically and is required for respirators with an assigned protection factor above 10.
How often is fit testing required?
OSHA 1910.134 requires it before first use, whenever a different respirator facepiece is used, when physical changes could affect fit, and at least annually.
Why is a sensitivity check needed first?
It confirms the subject can actually taste the test agent. Without it, a "pass" may simply mean the person cannot detect the substance, which tells you nothing about the seal.
Can I fit test my own employees?
Yes, provided the test is conducted per an OSHA-accepted protocol in Appendix A of 1910.134 and the person conducting it is competent to do so.
Does a fit test cover every respirator I own?
No. Fit testing is specific to the make, model, style and size. A different facepiece requires a new test.
Where do the specifications on this page come from?
They are taken from the manufacturer's published listing. WC Safety does not laboratory-test products, and nothing is claimed here that the manufacturer does not state.
Does WC Safety sell this product?
No. WC Safety is an independent review site and an Amazon Associate. Purchases happen on Amazon, and we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
