- Gauge and true thickness
- Gauge describes film thickness. Higher gauge means more puncture resistance and holding force; lower gauge stretches further per roll but tears more easily on sharp corners.
- Cast versus blown film
- Cast film unwinds quietly, is clearer and stretches smoothly. Blown film is tougher and resists puncture better but is noisier and hazier.
- Pre-stretched film
- Pre-stretched film has already been elongated during manufacture, so it needs less force to apply - useful for hand wrapping and for reducing operator strain.

What gauge stretch wrap do I need?
Light, regular-shaped loads wrap fine with lower gauge film. Heavy, sharp-cornered or unstable loads need higher gauge for puncture resistance and holding force.
What is the difference between cast and blown stretch wrap?
Cast film is made by extrusion onto a chilled roller - clearer, quieter to unwind, smoother stretch. Blown film is air-cooled - tougher and more puncture resistant, but hazier and louder.
Is pre-stretched film worth it?
For hand wrapping it usually is. It requires much less pulling force, which reduces operator fatigue and shoulder strain, and it yields more wrapped pallets per pound of film.
How many wraps does a pallet need?
Enough to achieve the containment force the load requires, with reinforcement at the base to lock the load to the pallet. Counting revolutions alone does not tell you whether the load is secure.
Why does my film keep tearing?
Usually sharp corners, too high a stretch setting for the gauge, or film that is too light for the load. Corner protectors and a heavier gauge both help.
