Editor's take (4.8/5):

The New Pig KIT318 Acid-Neutralizing Spill Kit does what a universal kit can't: it neutralizes an acid spill, with a color indicator that confirms when it's safe — and it packs the PPE (goggles, gloves, apron) right in the chemical-resistant bucket. It's the acid-specific kit; for bases use a base kit, for oil and water use the universal KIT21. Browse the spill control range.

New Pig KIT318 Acid-Neutralizing Spill Kit overview

The New Pig KIT318 Acid-Neutralizing Spill Kit is a 4-gallon bucket kit for the higher-hazard job of cleaning up an acid spill. Unlike a universal kit that only soaks liquid up, this one neutralizes the acid: neutralizing mats, socks, and pillows plus an ampho-mag shaker neutralizer raise the acid toward a safe pH, and a color-change indicator returns to normal once neutralization is complete, so responders know the residue is no longer strongly acidic. Just as important, the kit includes the PPE to respond safely — splash goggles, chemical gloves, and an apron — in a chemical-resistant polyethylene bucket with a hinged lid. See our best spill kits guide and the spill control collection.

Match the kit to the chemistry — that's the whole point of an acid kit. This is for acids only. For bases or caustics, use a base-neutralizing kit (New Pig's KIT319); for oils, coolants, and water, use the universal KIT21; and for oil that must shed water, the oil-only KIT413. For larger universal spills there's the 30-gallon KIT236. Whatever the liquid, always start with its safety data sheet, and pair the response with the right protection — our chemical-resistant gloves guide covers the hand protection acids demand.

Safety note — an acid spill is a serious chemical splash hazard.

An acid spill is a chemical splash hazard that can burn skin and eyes and give off harmful vapors. Put on the included splash goggles, chemical gloves, and apron before you approach, add a respirator if the acid off-gasses, and neutralize the spill before collecting it — wait for the color indicator to confirm it's neutral. This is the acid kit only; for a base or caustic use a base-neutralizing kit, and never mix response chemistries. Verify everything against the acid's safety data sheet and your written plan.

Where it fits

It's the response kit for acid-handling areas — labs, battery rooms, metal finishing and plating, water treatment, and chemical storage — where a spilled acid needs to be neutralized, not just absorbed. Suit up in the included PPE, dam with the neutralizing socks, apply the shaker neutralizer and mats, confirm the color change, and bag the residue. It's not for oils or water (use the universal KIT21) or for bases. Keep the right PPE and emergency gear on hand — our chemical-resistant nitrile gloves and respirator cartridge guides help, and a first-aid kit and eyewash should be nearby.

Pros & cons

Pros
  • Neutralizes acids — not just absorbs
  • Color indicator confirms when it's neutral
  • Includes PPE (goggles, chem gloves, apron)
  • Chemical-resistant polyethylene bucket; 4-gal
Keep in mind
  • Acids only — not bases/caustics (use KIT319)
  • Not for oils, coolant, or water (use universal)
  • Capacity/compatibility vary by acid — check SDS
  • Higher-hazard response — trained responders only

Frequently asked questions

What does an acid-neutralizing kit do that a regular spill kit doesn't?

It neutralizes the acid rather than just soaking it up. The neutralizing absorbents and ampho-mag shaker neutralizer chemically raise the acid toward a safe pH, and a color-change indicator confirms when neutralization is complete, so you clean up a safer, less-corrosive residue.

Is it for acids only, or bases and caustics too?

This is the acid-neutralizing kit — use it for acid spills. For bases or caustics you need a base-neutralizing kit (New Pig's KIT319), and for oils, coolants, or water use a universal kit. Match the kit to the chemistry, and always check the safety data sheet first.

How does the color indicator work?

The absorbents change color as they take in the acid, then return to their normal color once the spill has been neutralized. That visual cue tells responders the residue is no longer strongly acidic and is ready to collect for disposal.

What's included in the kit?

Acid-neutralizing mats, socks, and pillows; an ampho-mag neutralizer; PPE (splash goggles, chemical gloves, and an apron); a dispenser of acid cleaner and neutralizing wipes; disposal bags; all in a chemical-resistant polyethylene bucket with a hinged lid.

Does it include PPE?

Yes. Because an acid spill is hazardous, the kit comes with splash goggles, chemical-resistant (chem-master) gloves, and an apron so a responder can suit up from the same bucket. Confirm the PPE matches the specific acid and add more as needed.

How much can it absorb?

It has 4-gallon absorbency, sized for the smaller, higher-hazard acid spills common in labs, plating, and battery or chemical-handling areas. For larger volumes, step up to a bigger neutralizing kit.

Can I use it on an oil or water spill?

It's not the right tool for that. Acid-neutralizing absorbents are formulated for acids; for oils, coolants, and water use a universal kit like the KIT21. Using the wrong kit wastes the neutralizer and may not clean up effectively.

What acids will it handle?

It's built for common industrial and lab acids, but neutralizing capacity and compatibility vary by acid and concentration. Always verify the specific acid against the neutralizer's guidance and the acid's safety data sheet before responding.

How do I use it in a spill?

Put on the included PPE, dam the spill with the neutralizing socks, apply the shaker neutralizer and mats to absorb and neutralize, wait for the color indicator to return to normal, then bag the residue. Follow the kit instructions and your site's procedure.

Is the bucket chemical-resistant?

Yes. The bucket is 100% polyethylene, which resists chemicals, with a weather-proof hinged lid and a large color-coded label so responders can identify and open it fast in an emergency.

How do I dispose of the neutralized residue?

Even neutralized, the residue may be regulated depending on the acid and your local rules, so dispose of it per your local, state, and federal waste regulations. The disposal bags help you contain it for proper handling.

Do I still need training and a written plan?

Yes. Acid response is higher-risk than a routine oil spill, so the kit supports — but does not replace — trained responders, the acid's safety data sheet, ventilation, and a written spill-response plan.
