EDITORIAL REVIEW β€” Ergodyne GloWear 8246Z-S Class 2 Mesh Hi-Vis Vest Type R Single Size Zipper

Assessed on the standards the product is actually certified to and on how the format fits a working shift, by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor.

The Ergodyne GloWear 8246Z-S Two-Tone Mesh Hi-Vis Safety Vest provides ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 high-visibility compliance in a single-size, two-tone mesh vest with zipper closure β€” delivering Class 2 retroreflective material coverage in a one-size-fits-most format that simplifies inventory management for programs issuing hi-vis vests to diverse workforce populations or to visitor and temporary worker groups where individual sizing isn't practical. The 8246Z-S is GloWear's single-size version of their Class 2 mesh zipper vest β€” the "S" suffix denoting the single-size format that adjusts to fit a broad range of body sizes through the vest's adjustment design, eliminating the need for size-specific purchasing and stock management. Type R, Class 2 certification meets ANSI/ISEA 107 requirements for environments with vehicle speeds up to 50 mph and mixed-use roadway worker visibility β€” the minimum standard for most construction, utility, and maintenance operations on urban streets and lower-speed highway work zones. The two-tone design uses lime yellow mesh background with silver retroreflective stripes in the horizontal torso band configuration that Class 2 specifies β€” providing better silhouette definition than solid single-color vests through the contrast between the lime background and silver reflective tape. The mesh construction provides breathable, lightweight wear for warm conditions or active-work contexts where solid fabric increases heat burden. The zipper closure maintains vest position during work activities. Single-size format addresses the most common friction point in visitor and guest vest programs: maintaining a sized inventory sufficient to fit the range of people who need vests on any given day, managing reorder by size, and tracking vest sizes across storage locations.

Ergodyne GloWear 8246Z-S Two-Tone Mesh Hi-Vis Vest Type R Class 2 Single Size β€” Key Features

High-visibility clothing helps you be seen; it does not keep you out of the way. The first control is separation β€” traffic control plans, barriers, exclusion zones and spotters between people and moving equipment. Garment class is the second layer: ANSI/ISEA 107 sets Type and Performance Class by the traffic environment and the background material, and a garment only performs while it is clean and unfaded.

  • ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 β€” hi-vis certification for environments up to 50 mph vehicle speeds
  • Single size (S) β€” one-size-fits-most format for simplified inventory and visitor/guest programs
  • Two-tone mesh design β€” lime mesh background with silver retroreflective stripes
  • Zipper front closure β€” secure fastening for work activities
  • Lightweight breathable mesh β€” comfort for warm conditions and active work

Single-Size Class 2 Vest: Simplified Inventory for Visitor Programs and Diverse Workforce Deployment

Construction sites, utility facilities, industrial plants, and transportation operations that issue hi-vis vests to visitors, contractors, temporary workers, and site guests face an inventory management challenge with sized vests: they must maintain sufficient stock of each size (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL) to accommodate the range of people who may show up on any given day, manage reorder by size, and deal with size distribution imbalances when their visitor mix doesn't match the size stock available. Single-size vests resolve this by providing one product that adjusts to fit the range from average to large adult body sizes β€” a site can stock one vest model rather than six sizes, simplify reorder to a single SKU, and eliminate the "sorry, we're out of your size" barrier to visitor compliance. The 8246Z-S's single-size format accomplishes this adjustment through the vest's design β€” typically a generous cut with side adjustment points or simply a large-format vest cut that covers the required Class 2 retroreflective areas over a wide body size range. Class 2 certification is appropriate for the environments where visitor and temporary worker vest programs are most common: construction sites with vehicle access, utility facilities with moving equipment, industrial yards with forklift traffic, and transportation terminals β€” environments with vehicles operating at speeds generally below 50 mph where Class 2 provides the ANSI-required visibility level. The mesh construction reduces the thermal impact of vest issue to workers who may already be wearing work layers, and the zipper closure keeps the vest in position during site visits and work activities without requiring adjustment instruction.

Compliance and Standards

  • ANSI/ISEA 107 β€” Type R, Class 2 certified
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926.201 β€” hi-vis apparel for roadway construction compliance support

Real-World Benefits

Single-size format eliminates size inventory management for visitor and guest vest programs β€” sites that issue vests to an unpredictable mix of visitor body sizes maintain one SKU rather than six, eliminating stockout situations where the correct size isn't available and the visitor either can't access the site or enters without required hi-vis coverage. Site safety managers who have converted from sized to single-size guest vest stock report dramatically simplified procurement and storage management alongside consistent visitor compliance rates.

Mesh construction reduces thermal burden for issued vest wear β€” visitors, contractors, and temporary workers who receive an issued vest on top of their existing clothing are less likely to resist wearing or remove the vest when the issued garment is lightweight mesh rather than a heavier fabric that adds significantly to their clothing weight and thermal load.

Applications and Use Cases

  • Construction site visitor programs β€” single-size Class 2 for guest and contractor issue β€” 8246Z-S for construction site safety offices issuing vests to site visitors, inspectors, owner representatives, and temporary workers in Class 2 environments where one-size-fits-most format eliminates size stock management
  • Utility and industrial facility access β€” single-size vest for visitor and contractor compliance β€” 8246Z-S for industrial facilities that require hi-vis vest wear in forklift and vehicle zones and issue vests at entry for visitors and service contractors where single-size simplifies the issuance process
  • Event and temporary work programs β€” Class 2 mesh for event crew and temporary workforce hi-vis compliance β€” 8246Z-S for event production crews, temporary construction labor, and short-duration work teams where individual sizing isn't practical and a single-size vest provides Class 2 compliance across the team

My Go To Safety vest
This safety vest is my favorite. It's the only one I buy. I was tired of wearing safety vests that went down to my knees. I'm not quite sure why safety vest makers think we either need something 10 times too big, or that we're all 400 pounds. Anyway, Ergodyne makes a great quality vest that fits right, and I love the clear pocket for my badges, makes it so i don't have to wear a lanyard that tends to gets caught on everything around me.

Bad sewing of pockets
This vest looks good and strong. But wearing it about a week the pockets started ripping loose from the seam. And no one wants to make it right. I have sent emails and called no response, bad business don’t you think?

Frequently Asked Questions

What body size range does single-size fit?
Single-size vests are designed to fit average to large adult body sizes β€” typically covering the range from approximately medium through 2XL or 3XL body dimensions. The vest's open vest format (not a fitted garment) provides significant adjustment latitude: a smaller person wearing a larger-cut vest will have excess fabric at the sides, but the vest will still provide the required retroreflective coverage geometry for Class 2 compliance. For very large workers (3XL+ body dimensions), a single-size vest may not provide adequate coverage or comfortable fit, and sized vests in extended sizes may be required. Review the manufacturer's fit guidance for the specific size range the 8246Z-S accommodates.
Is Class 2 sufficient for all construction site environments?
Class 2 meets ANSI/ISEA 107 requirements for most construction site environments where vehicle speeds are below 50 mph β€” the threshold that separates Class 2 (under 50 mph) from Class 3 (above 50 mph) requirements. For construction sites located on or adjacent to high-speed highways and expressways, Class 3 is the appropriate specification. For typical urban and suburban construction sites with on-site vehicle traffic at low speeds, Class 2 is the standard. Consult the specific project's safety plan and the applicable MUTCD provisions for the work zone to confirm the required class for your environment before specifying vests. How was this page put together?
From the manufacturer's published specification for this model and from the text of the standards it cites. WC Safety is an independent review site and does not perform laboratory testing; where a figure is not published, the page says so instead of estimating one.
Does WC Safety sell this product?
No. WC Safety is an affiliate review site and holds no inventory. Outbound Amazon links are affiliate links that earn a commission at no cost to you, and they do not affect what the page says.
Is PPE alone enough to control this hazard?
No. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 the employer must first try to eliminate or engineer out the hazard, then control what is left administratively. Personal protective equipment covers the residual risk and is the last layer, not the plan.
How do I know the item I receive is the one described here?
Match the manufacturer's model or part number, not the product name. Vendors run several variants under one family name, and the part number is the only field that identifies a specific certified configuration.
What should I check before ordering a size or variant?
Check that the variant you select carries the rating you need. On multi-variant listings the rated option is often one choice among several, so the rating shown in the title may not apply to every size or colour in the dropdown.
How do I check I am looking at the current version of this product?
Compare the model or part number on the listing against the manufacturer's current catalogue page. Vendors revise hardware without renaming it, and a listing photo often lags the revision by a year or more. The part number changes when the specification does; the product name frequently does not.
What should I do if the listing and the manufacturer's page disagree?
Treat the manufacturer's own current documentation as authoritative and the marketplace listing as a copy of it that may be out of date. Where the disagreement is about a safety rating, do not proceed on the more favourable number - confirm it with the manufacturer before relying on it.
How often is this page updated?
Whenever the manufacturer's published specification changes, whenever a standard this page cites is revised, and on a fixed review cycle in between. The page states what the sources say at the time of review; it is not a live feed of the seller's listing.
What does the editorial assessment on this page mean?
It is WC Safety's own opinion, formed from the published specification and the standards the product is certified to. It is first-party editorial judgement, not an average of customer ratings, and no customer-review data is aggregated anywhere on this page.
How should I compare this against the alternatives?
Compare on the rating and the certification first, then on fit, comfort and serviceability - in that order. Two items that meet the same standard are equivalent on protection, so the remaining differences are about whether the equipment gets worn or used correctly, which is where most real-world failures actually come from.
