EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.5/5 β€” WC Safety Review of the Ergodyne GloWear 8235ZX, a two-tone X-back Class 2 zipper vest.
Editorial assessment by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor, based on published Ergodyne specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Ergodyne GloWear 8235ZX is an ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 two-tone hi-vis safety vest with an X-back retroreflective stripe pattern and a zipper front closure, using the same lime and silver material as the standard 8230Z but arranging the back tape in an X for enhanced rear visibility and a more distinctive worker silhouette from behind, in environments up to 50 mph.

Why the Ergodyne GloWear 8235ZX boosts rear visibility with an X-back

Workers who spend the shift with their backs to traffic β€” flaggers, spotters, crews facing the work β€” get most of their conspicuity from the rear of the vest, and a single horizontal back band only reflects strongly at waist level when they are upright. The 8235ZX addresses that: the same Type R Class 2 lime-and-silver material and zipper front as the standard 8230Z, but with the rear tape arranged in an X that spreads retroreflective coverage across a larger back area and reads as a more distinctive, harness-like silhouette. As safety vests go, this is the X-back rear-visibility pick, and the best hi-vis safety vests guide and ANSI 107 guide cover how to match a vest to the work zone. It makes the worker's back easier to spot.

Safety first: the 8235ZX is high-visibility apparel for being seen in traffic and low light β€” it is not protective clothing rated for a chemical splash hazard, cut, flame, or arc. For those hazards, wear the appropriate rated PPE, including chemical-resistant gear for chemicals. Class 2 covers up to 50 mph, so step to Class 3 for high-speed zones, and confirm the class with the when-do-you-need-hi-vis guide. Retire the vest once the fluorescent fabric fades or the tape cracks.

What the Ergodyne GloWear 8235ZX listing documents

From the published specs: ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 certification; a two-tone lime-and-silver design shared with the 8230Z; an X-back retroreflective tape pattern on the rear panel; a zipper front closure; and Class 2 coverage (775 square inches) for environments up to 50 mph. These are true class 2 x-back vest credentials and a genuine two-tone hi-vis vest β€” a rear-visibility zipper safety vest.

How the Ergodyne GloWear 8235ZX compares to other hi-vis

For the standard horizontal-back version of this two-tone vest, the GloWear 8230Z; for a solid single-color version, the GloWear 8225Z; for a foundational mesh zipper vest, the GloWear 8210Z; for the mid-tier mesh zipper vest, the GloWear 8220Z; and for a Class 3 surveyor vest, the GloWear 8346Z. The complete hi-vis apparel guide covers the range.

Choosing the right hi-vis garment

Match Type, Class, back pattern, and closure to the work zone and viewing angle. For garment families, browse the high-visibility, Class 2 vests, and Class 3 vests collections; for shirts and layers, the hi-vis shirts, hi-vis jackets, and hi-vis hoodies; and for the class decision, the hi-vis shirts guide.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The 8235ZX suits flaggers, spotters, and crews who work with their backs to traffic and need the enhanced rear visibility of the X-back pattern. Size it correctly to keep the reflective geometry in place, step up to Class 3 for high-speed zones, and retire it when the material fades; for outerwear options, compare the hi-vis jackets guide and the hi-vis rainwear collection. Frequently asked questions

What is the Ergodyne GloWear 8235ZX?

An ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 two-tone hi-vis safety vest with an X-back retroreflective stripe pattern and a zipper front closure. It uses the same lime and silver material as the 8230Z but arranges the back tape in an X for enhanced rear visibility.

What does Type R, Class 2 mean?

ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R covers roadway workers, and Class 2 meets the standard for environments with vehicle speeds up to 50 mph, where 775 square inches of combined background and retroreflective material meets the visibility standard, as the listing states.

What is the X-back pattern?

The X-back arranges the rear retroreflective tape in an X configuration on the back panel rather than a single horizontal band, creating a harness-like pattern that covers a larger back area and reads as a more distinctive silhouette from behind.

Why choose X-back?

A single horizontal back band provides retroreflection mainly at waist level when a worker is upright; an X pattern spreads retroreflective coverage across a larger back area - useful for workers frequently observed from behind.

How does it differ from the 8230Z?

The 8235ZX uses the same lime and silver two-tone material and zipper closure as the 8230Z, but with an X-back tape arrangement instead of the 8230Z's standard horizontal back band. Choose the X-back for enhanced rear visibility.

How does it differ from the solid 8225Z?

The 8235ZX is a two-tone X-back vest; the 8225Z is a solid single-color lime vest with a standard stripe layout. Choose the 8235ZX for rear-visibility emphasis and the 8225Z for a uniform look.

Is this chemical or cut protective clothing?

No - the 8235ZX is high-visibility apparel for being seen, not rated for a chemical splash hazard or cut protection. Use chemical-resistant or cut-rated PPE for those hazards.

When is Class 3 needed instead?

Class 3 is required for high-speed traffic above 50 mph and complex or low-light work zones. Confirm the class with the ANSI 107 guidance and your traffic control plan.

Does it work day and night?

Yes - the fluorescent lime background provides daytime conspicuity and the silver X-back and front retroreflective tape return headlight and work-light beams at night.

What sizes are available?

Confirm the size and fit options on the product listing; a properly fitted vest keeps the reflective geometry positioned for its rated visibility.

How do I care for it?

Follow Ergodyne's care instructions and laundering limits; retire the vest when the fluorescent fabric fades or the retroreflective tape cracks, since faded material no longer meets its visibility rating.

How do I order for a crew?

Quantity purchasing runs through a free Amazon Business account - volume pricing, PO numbers at checkout, and tax-exempt eligibility for qualifying organizations. The bulk-ordering walkthrough is linked in our site footer.

HiVis Safety Vest.
Fits as a XXL instead of a XXXL so it's somewhat small for me. I'm still going to rock it because the cross reflective stripes on the back are essential for visibility at the railway ramp where I work. Quality is great, pockets are where they should be and zippers look as they'll last forever. Thank you.

Would buy these again.
I bought these to fit our companies specific requirements for an X pattern of reflective tape on the back. These worked great and it is very nice having a zipper front. These were significantly cheaper than from other safety vendors and twice as fast. Thanks amazon.

I bought 2 of these at a great price. But for the 4 and 5X guys these are a little short length wise. Like the pockets and zip ups just prefer to be a little longer in length.

The L/XL is huge. Swimming in it. I weigh 220 and I’m muscular and this thing is like a towel draped on me. Should’ve ordered the Medium.

Women Still Lack Equality on the Crew
Wish I could give more stars. These are just too darn big. Even the smallest available. I have yet to find a Class 2 X-Back Orange safety vest for a small female frame. The only one that I've found is PINK, for crying out loud!! This will have to do until the day comes when women are seen as being in equal need of safety and comfort as men on the crew.

Not as advertised
Not as advertised. This does not have an "X" on the back which is the only reason I bought it. This will be returned ASAP. Buying Beware.
