EDITORIAL REVIEW: 4.6/5 β€” WC Safety Review of the Ergodyne GloWear 8215BA, a Class 2 breakaway vest for equipment-proximity work.
Editorial assessment by Steven Eaton, WC Safety editor, based on published Ergodyne specifications and category fit. We did not laboratory-test this product.

The Ergodyne GloWear 8215BA is an ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 breakaway hi-vis safety vest that releases when snagged by moving equipment or vehicles, delivering Class 2 visibility in a design that sheds under snag load rather than transmitting entanglement force to the worker, for environments up to 50 mph with equipment and vehicle proximity β€” the Class 2 version of the Class 3 8315BA.

Why the Ergodyne GloWear 8215BA reduces entanglement risk near equipment

A standard vest with a fixed closure transmits any snag force from passing equipment straight through the garment to the worker β€” a real hazard on sites with forklifts, cranes, and mobile equipment. The 8215BA addresses that: a breakaway design that releases and sheds under snag load, so a vest caught by a forklift mast or crane cable separates instead of pulling the worker, while still meeting Type R Class 2 visibility for environments up to 50 mph. It is the Class 2 counterpart to the Class 3 8315BA in GloWear's breakaway line. As safety vests go, this is the anti-entanglement pick, and the best hi-vis safety vests guide and ANSI 107 guide cover how to match a vest to the work zone. It keeps workers seen and reduces snag risk.

Safety first: the 8215BA is high-visibility apparel for being seen in traffic and low light β€” it is not protective clothing rated for a chemical splash hazard, cut, flame, or arc. For those hazards, wear the appropriate rated PPE, including chemical-resistant gear for chemicals. The breakaway function is a snag-release mechanism, not a reduction in the required Class 2 material; Class 2 covers up to 50 mph, so step to Class 3 for high-speed zones and confirm with the when-do-you-need-hi-vis guide. Retire the vest once the fluorescent fabric fades or the tape cracks.

What the Ergodyne GloWear 8215BA listing documents

From the published specs: ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 certification; a breakaway design that releases under snag load; the same snag-release function as the Class 3 8315BA; and Class 2 background and retroreflective coverage for environments up to 50 mph. These are true class 2 breakaway vest credentials and a genuine breakaway hi-vis vest β€” an anti-snag safety vest for equipment-proximity work.

How the Ergodyne GloWear 8215BA compares to other hi-vis

For the Class 3 breakaway version, the GloWear 8315BA; for a standard Class 2 two-tone zipper vest, the GloWear 8230Z; for an economy no-pocket vest, the GloWear 8205HL; for a mesh zipper vest, the GloWear 8210Z; and for a Class 3 surveyor vest, the GloWear 8346Z. The complete hi-vis apparel guide covers the range.

Choosing the right hi-vis garment

Match Type, Class, and features like breakaway to the work zone, speed, and equipment exposure. For garment families, browse the high-visibility, Class 2 vests, and Class 3 vests collections; for shirts and layers, the hi-vis shirts, hi-vis jackets, and hi-vis hoodies; and for the class decision, the hi-vis shirts guide.

Where it fits by job and crew orders

The 8215BA suits construction, industrial, and utility crews who work near forklifts, cranes, and mobile equipment and need Class 2 visibility with snag-release protection. Size it correctly to keep the reflective geometry in place, step up to Class 3 for high-speed zones, and retire it when the material fades; for outerwear options, compare the hi-vis jackets guide and the hi-vis rainwear collection. Frequently asked questions

What is the Ergodyne GloWear 8215BA?

An ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R, Class 2 breakaway hi-vis safety vest that releases when snagged by moving equipment or vehicles. It is the Class 2 version of the Class 3 8315BA breakaway vest.

What does breakaway mean?

The breakaway design releases and sheds under snag load rather than transmitting entanglement force to the worker. A vest caught by a forklift mast, crane cable, or passing equipment separates instead of pulling the worker.

What does Type R, Class 2 mean?

ANSI/ISEA 107 Type R covers roadway workers, and Class 2 meets the standard for environments with vehicle speeds up to 50 mph, providing the background material area and retroreflective stripe configuration Class 2 specifies, as the listing states.

Where is a breakaway vest most useful?

Construction sites with moving equipment, industrial facilities with forklifts and mobile equipment, utility yards with vehicle access, and lower-speed roadway work where workers are near passing vehicles.

How does it differ from the Class 3 8315BA?

Both share the same breakaway snag-release function; the 8215BA is Class 2 for environments up to 50 mph, while the 8315BA is Class 3 for high-speed traffic. Choose the class your work zone requires.

Is this chemical or cut protective clothing?

No - the 8215BA is high-visibility apparel for being seen, not rated for a chemical splash hazard or cut protection. Use chemical-resistant or cut-rated PPE for those hazards.

Does breakaway reduce visibility compliance?

No - the vest meets Type R Class 2 coverage while worn; the breakaway function is a release mechanism for snag events, not a reduction in the required fluorescent and retroreflective material.

When is Class 3 needed instead?

Class 3 is required for high-speed traffic above 50 mph and complex or low-light work zones. Confirm the class with the ANSI 107 guidance and your traffic control plan.

Does it work day and night?

Yes - the fluorescent background provides daytime conspicuity and the retroreflective stripes return headlight and work-light beams at night.

What sizes are available?

Confirm the size and fit options on the product listing; a properly fitted vest keeps the reflective geometry positioned for its rated visibility.

How do I care for it?

Follow Ergodyne's care instructions and laundering limits; retire the vest when the fluorescent fabric fades or the retroreflective tape cracks, since faded material no longer meets its visibility rating.

How do I order for a crew?

Quantity purchasing runs through a free Amazon Business account - volume pricing, PO numbers at checkout, and tax-exempt eligibility for qualifying organizations. The bulk-ordering walkthrough is linked in our site footer.

decent for the price
Inexpensive safety vest. I wanted one to keep in the car for during breakdowns and also if hiking during deer hunting season. Size L/XL worked beautifully for me (I usually wear an L in outerwear and XL in tops), with enough extra material to fit over a jacket + hoodie w/o bunching or flaring. The tear aways work as expected (it "comes apart" at the shoulders if you get stuck on something)Negatives: The materials might feel hot in warm weather. The grey strips aren't really reflective. It could be more anatomically shaped. If you wear a backpack, you'll cover a large part of the high-vis surface.

Vest fits large person
I am a large person and this vest fits quite well. I am even able to wear on top of a hoodie sweatshirt on cooler days. The fasteners are made of velcro and the panels pull apart if the vest gets caught on anything. It is also light weight and very bright.

A little smaller than expected
Depending on the brand, I wear either 4X or 5X shirts, so expected this to fit me well - however, it is not big enough to close the Velcro in front. Still good quality and very useful, just not quite there on sizing!

Size not accurate. Not as big as size indicates. 4xl wouldn't fit over a jacket or coat.
