ABS ANSI Z89.1 Chinstrap Class E EPS Foam Full Brim Hard Hat LockFit

The Ergodyne 8963 Skullerz Type 2 Full Brim Safety Helmet is a modern ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type II, Class E full-brim safety helmet designed for construction supervisors, utility lineworkers, outdoor industrial personnel, and electrical trades workers who require top and lateral impact protection with electrical insulation performance and the all-around brim that provides sun, rain, and falling debris protection in outdoor work environments. The Skullerz 8963 uses an ABS shell in the full-brim configuration with an integrated EPS foam halo liner that provides the all-around lateral impact attenuation required by the Type II classification — protection against impacts from the side, front, and rear that Type I (top-only) hard hats do not provide. The six-point ratchet suspension system provides tool-free fit adjustment across head sizes, and the included chin strap secures the helmet during work at height, on sloped surfaces, and in high-wind outdoor environments. Class E electrical rating provides insulation against electrical contact up to 20,000 volts AC under dry conditions, supporting deployment in high-voltage electrical distribution, substation work, and utility construction where electrical hazard protection is a program requirement alongside impact protection.

Type II vs. Type I: Why Full-Brim Work Requires Lateral Protection

ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 defines two impact protection types for industrial head protection. Type I helmets protect only against impacts to the top of the head — the standard hard hat configuration that has been used in industrial and construction environments for decades. Type II helmets add protection against lateral impacts — objects striking the side, front, or back of the head. The distinction matters significantly in full-brim outdoor environments where workers are exposed to falling objects, overhead tools, and structural materials that can strike from angles other than directly vertical. Construction workers framing on multi-story structures, utility lineworkers operating near overhead hardware, and civil construction workers in demolition or structural work environments encounter lateral impact hazards at frequencies that make Type II protection a meaningful safety upgrade over Type I for the exposures actually present in the work environment.

The EPS foam halo liner of the Skullerz 8963 is the structural component that provides Type II lateral impact performance. The halo liner wraps around the interior perimeter of the helmet shell — unlike traditional suspension-only hard hats that have no energy-absorbing material between the suspension and the shell at lateral positions — and absorbs impact energy from side, front, and rear strikes through controlled foam compression. The halo liner geometry also contributes to the retention performance of the chin strap system: the combined shell, liner, and strap retention reduces helmet displacement during fall and impact events, supporting the helmet's protection delivery in dynamic situations where a less retained helmet would translate or rotate off the head.

Class E Electrical Protection for Utility and Electrical Construction

Class E designation under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 indicates that the helmet has been tested to withstand 20,000 volts AC phase-to-ground contact under dry conditions without conducting electrical current to the wearer at levels that produce injury. This insulation performance is required for work in high-voltage electrical distribution environments — substation construction and maintenance, overhead distribution line work, transmission construction, and electrical contracting on systems rated above 600 volts where Class G (1,000V) protection is insufficient. Utility lineworkers performing maintenance on energized distribution circuits, substation construction crews working in proximity to energized switchgear, and electrical contractors on commercial and industrial projects with high-voltage systems are the primary workforce populations that require Class E head protection. The 8963 provides this electrical classification in the full-brim configuration that outdoor utility and electrical construction operations typically specify for the combination of sun, rain, and electrical arc flash protection.

Compliance and Certifications

  • ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 — Type II, Class E
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1926.100 — construction head protection requirements
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 — general industry head protection requirements

Real-World Benefits

Full-brim design provides all-around environmental protection for outdoor crews. The full brim blocks direct sun from the face, neck, and ears during extended outdoor work, reduces rain ingress at the neck, and provides lateral debris deflection that hard hat caps and short-brim designs do not offer — a practical daily-use benefit for workers in outdoor environments regardless of the specific hazard profile.

Type II lateral protection covers the actual impact hazard profile of construction and utility work. The Type II EPS foam halo liner protects against the side, front, and rear impacts that occur when workers move through structural steel environments, work beneath scaffold components, and operate in areas with overhead hardware that can fall or swing from non-vertical angles.

Six-point ratchet suspension provides secure fit for active work without tool adjustments. Workers who move between tasks requiring different protective gear or who wear the helmet throughout variable-posture activities can adjust the fit at the ratchet knob without removing tools or gloves, maintaining proper suspension engagement for impact protection throughout the workday.

Applications and Use Cases

  • Utility lineworkers and electrical construction — Class E full brim for high-voltage distribution work, substation construction, and transmission line operations
  • Construction supervisors and trades workers — Type II full brim for multi-story construction, structural steel, and civil construction environments with lateral and vertical impact exposure
  • Outdoor industrial operations — full brim for sun, rain, and debris protection in prolonged outdoor work environments

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Skullerz 8963 Type 2 compare to a traditional Type 1 full-brim hard hat?

A traditional Type 1 full-brim hard hat uses a suspension system inside a hollow shell and provides protection only against vertical impacts to the top of the head. The Skullerz 8963 Type 2 adds an EPS foam halo liner that absorbs lateral impact energy from side, front, and rear strikes — protection that Type 1 hard hats do not provide. In practice, this means the 8963 protects against a broader range of the impact hazards present in active construction and utility environments. The modern helmet profile is also lower and less top-heavy than traditional full-brim hard hats, improving comfort during extended wear and reducing neck fatigue during overhead work.

Comfortable Hard Hat, But More Importantly Keeps You Safe
I won't judge this safety hard-hat based on the merits of its safety rating, since more competent organizations have already done so, so I will instead focus on the ergonomics, fit, and other features baked into this thing. I haven't tested it with any large impacts, and, knock on wood, hopefully I never will.As far as the fit, I have a smaller head, which makes getting hard hats and helmets difficult, since they are normally designed for people with heads almost twice the size of mine. However, with the adjuster in the back, I was able to make this fit comfortably on my head without any major "give" as far as the helmet moving while wearing it. While the helmet itself feels like it could endure a significant impact, I am skeptical about whether the straps would survive that or just break. But if you were to suffer that much force, there is a greater chance that your head wouldn't survive it anyway, so it may not matter. The quality of the helmet is quite good overall though, while I had previously nit-picked about the straps, that isn't to say that they are "bad" or "cheap", just not as well constructed as the rest of the helmet is, which is fairly standard. Despite the plastic materials feeling super heavy duty on the top part of the helmet, the hard hat doesn't sacrifice quality for weight, and this helmet feels a bit on the lighter side based on the safety rating that it received. Reducing the weight does quite a bit for your neck if you have to wear it all day and just increased the overall comfort by more than you'd think. In white, the helmet looks professional and feels premium. Overall it's a fantastic value, and is definitely something I would want on my head if I was working around anything that might be falling on it.

Well-Designed Safety Helmet That Fits Comfortably and Functions Exactly as Intended
The Ergodyne Skullerz 8963 Full Brim Safety Helmet is a solid, reliable piece of safety equipment that delivers on the fundamental promise of any hard hat: protecting your head while remaining comfortable enough for extended wear.Fit and Adjustability:One of the most critical aspects of any safety helmet is achieving a proper, secure fit, and this hard hat excels in that regard. The 6-point suspension system provides excellent stability and weight distribution across your head, which is crucial for all-day comfort on job sites. What impressed me most is how easy the adjustment mechanism is to use. You can quickly dial in the perfect fit without fumbling with complicated straps or settings, even while wearing gloves. The helmet accommodates a wide range of head sizes, and the adjustments stay securely in place once set – you're not constantly having to readjust throughout the day.Chin Strap Integration:The included chin strap is a practical addition that sets this apart from basic hard hats. It keeps the helmet securely in place during windy conditions, when working at heights, or during any activity where a standard hard hat might shift or fall off. The strap is comfortable against the skin and doesn't cause irritation during extended wear, which is something cheaper alternatives often fail to address.Full Brim Design:The full brim design provides superior protection compared to cap-style hard hats. It offers excellent coverage from sun exposure, rain, and falling debris from all angles – not just directly overhead. This 360-degree protection is particularly valuable for outdoor work or environments where hazards can come from any direction. The brim is wide enough to be effective without being so large that it becomes cumbersome or interferes with your work.Safety Certifications:This helmet meets ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type 2 Class E standards, which means it provides both top and lateral impact protection as well as electrical hazard protection up to 20,000 volts. These certifications aren't just bureaucratic checkboxes – they represent real, tested safety standards that matter in hazardous work environments. Knowing your safety equipment meets these rigorous requirements provides genuine peace of mind.Build Quality and Durability:The construction feels robust and built to withstand the demands of professional use. The white color is practical for maintaining visibility in various work environments and helps reflect heat in sunny conditions, keeping you cooler than darker-colored alternatives. The materials feel durable enough to handle the bumps, scrapes, and general abuse that hard hats inevitably encounter on job sites.Performance:Simply put, this helmet does exactly what it's supposed to do. It provides reliable head protection without creating discomfort or distraction that would interfere with your work. Sometimes the best praise for safety equipment is that it performs its function so well that you can forget you're wearing it and focus on the task at hand – and this helmet achieves that balance.Overall Assessment:The Ergodyne Skullerz 8963 is a well-engineered safety helmet that prioritizes both protection and comfort. The easy adjustability, secure fit, practical chin strap, and full brim design make it a superior choice for anyone who needs reliable head protection. Whether you're in construction, utilities, manufacturing, or any field requiring safety headgear, this helmet provides the protection you need with the comfort necessary for all-day wear. It's a straightforward, effective piece of safety equipment that does its job without compromise.

Great protection, easy to wear
I am a contractor but I can do any work on a house. I can do electrical, plumbing, framing, everything. I needed a new helmet and I got this. This is a fantastic helmet that protects your head while feeling comfortable. The dial in the back makes adjustments fast and easy. The brim protects you when working in the direct sunlight. The chin strap means I can move freely and not lose the helmet. Overall this is a fantastic safe and comfortable helmet. The price is a bit high. You can find similar helmets for less. It is hard though to find one that offers this much protection and comfort.

Good protection and easy to wear
Safety equipment (like exercise, eating properly and a hundred other things in life) is only as good as your willingness to take it seriously.Anyone who has had a close call or has been save by the right hat, boots or vest will attest to the importance of fit and comfort as a precursor to being willing to use the equipment consistently. This is a well fitting helmet which is easily and readily adjusted to most heads without having to even take it off . An integrated chin strap augments the feeling of security as this will not blow off easily--or be accidentally knocked off.It looks good as well and the blue color is attractive and quite noticeable. Though sturdy, it is appropriately lightweight that you will not feel claustrophobic or too hot while wearing it. The interior suspension is augmented by a cushioned pad at the vertex of your scalp so the entire weight is well distributed and comfortable.I am not the person that buys these helmets in my arena but I am told this is a great value for an appropriately rated Type 2.You may be required to use this for your job and typically you don't have much choice since regulations and insurance dictate what must be included in your kit. But for casual jobs around the home, having this on hand (like safety goggles) can also be a lifesaver. The comfort and distinctive good lucks will encourage the casual user to wear this when doing chores which involve overhead protection (like trimming work or even getting stuff out of the attic) and will mean the difference for someone between 'that was close' and potentially something much worse.Good purchase for the job. BUt equally valuable around the home or shop.

Great Quality!
I got this Ergodyne Skullerz 8963 Full Brim Safety Helmet, Type 2 Class E Hard Hat with Chin Strap, ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014, 6 Point Suspension. The Ergodyne Skullerz 8963 Full Brim Safety Helmet is a solid, well-made hard hat that feels durable and reliable. It fits nicely and, for a hard hat, is fairly comfortable to wear for extended periods thanks to the 6-point suspension system. Since it doesn’t have vents, it’s better suited for cooler weather or indoor use rather than hot environments. Comfortable, Secure & Much Better Than Standard Work Helmets — Worth Every Penny
I upgraded to the Ergodyne Skullerz 8963 full brim safety helmet and immediately noticed the difference compared to the standard helmet my workplace provides.First off — comfort. The padding inside is excellent and makes a huge difference during long wear. It cushions well without feeling bulky, and I really appreciate that the padding removes easily for cleaning. After sweaty days or dusty projects, being able to freshen it up is a big plus. The adjustment system is simple to use and locks firmly in place once set. No loosening throughout the day, which I’ve had happen with other helmets. The chin strap also sits nicely and comfortably without rubbing or feeling restrictive. The material feels lightweight but very strong and sturdy. I’ve already tested its durability with an accidental impact and it performed exactly how you’d want a safety helmet to — protected well and gave me confidence wearing it.I use this both at work and for home projects, and honestly it’s a major upgrade from typical job-site helmets. It also has a really good look to it — not bulky or awkward — which makes me more willing to keep it on instead of taking it off.Overall, this is a great investment for safety and the value is worth every penny. Once you wear this, it’s hard to go back to standard issued helmets.

Nice Helmet
Good protection on the job, with very comfortable suspension rig inside. The fit is perfectly dialed in and the chin strap holds it in place. The plastic is nicer and sturdier than the company-issue versions we have. It's a nice piece of gear. It's not inexpensive, however. You will find it a better value if you are using one of these professionally, needing to lean this way and that while keeping your cover on firmly. Field service operators like carpenters and riggers will find this to be a nice helmet I think.

Comfortable Hard Hat
Had a nice close one the other day with a heavy item falling from above and I was not wearing my helmet because it's uncomfortable. So, this was a good opportunity to try something better and, oh boy, this is better. Lots of adjustment points to go along with the suspension web and open frame. After a little bit of fiddling around with the straps I got it just right so that it is comfortable in all positions no matter which way I turn my head.Had to google the other stuff like the type and class to find out that it is electrical rated. Not necessary in my case, but the type 2 is good so that the entirety of my dome is protected. In any case, my main point was to get a good quality, COMFORTABLE, hard hat and this one delivers.

Reliable protection for demanding work environments
This helmet was used on a job site that required head protection with electrical rating, and it met those needs without feeling overly bulky. The full brim design helped shield from sun and falling debris, which was noticeable during long outdoor shifts. The six point suspension distributed weight evenly, reducing pressure on the top of the head. The chin strap kept it stable when bending or moving quickly. The green color also made it easy to spot among other workers, which added a small but useful safety benefit. After several hours of wear, comfort remained acceptable, though like most hard hats it can get warm in hot conditions. Adjustments were easy to make with gloves on, and the helmet felt secure without constant readjustment. It feels solid and well built, suitable for repeated daily use. While ventilation could be better, the overall protection and stability make it a dependable choice for professional settings.
