Best For: Cutting where you flip the Shade 5 plate up for an unobstructed clear view between cuts — and the WS body still fits over prescription glasses.

Not For: Arc welding (use a helmet), light soldering (Shade 3 is comfier), or heavy grinding needing a single impact wraparound.

Bottom Line: The flip-front OTG cutting goggle — flip up to inspect, flip down to cut, fits over glasses. For a fixed, cheaper version, see the Jackson WS round.

Jackson Safety WS Flip-Front Cutting Goggle — Shade 5 IRUV Overview

Impact protection and splash protection are different tests. ANSI Z87.1 rates spectacles for impact, but only a device marked for splash (D3) is evaluated against a chemical splash hazard; safety glasses with open sides do not qualify, and a face shield is a secondary protector worn over primary eye protection rather than instead of it.

The Jackson Safety WS Series flip-front cutting goggle carries a 2 in x 4.25 in Shade 5 IRUV filter plate that flips up for an unobstructed clear view, in a heat-resistant frame, ANSI Z87.1+. It combines flip-front convenience with an over-the-glasses fit. Browse the full welding goggles collection and the broader safety goggles and eye protection ranges, and see when a goggle beats glasses in safety glasses vs goggles.

Where the Jackson WS (flip) Fits in Eye-Protection Selection

Match the eye protection to the process. Shade 5 is for oxy-fuel cutting and brazing; arc welding needs a helmet instead. Confirm filter density in our welding shade-number reference, the impact/marking rules in ANSI Z87.1, and the employer requirement in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133.

Who Should Buy the Jackson WS (flip)?

  • Buy it if you cut and want to flip the dark plate up to inspect work, with an OTG fit.
  • Buy it if workers wear prescription glasses and want flip-front convenience.
  • Choose another shade if your process differs — Shade 5 Lincoln K3118-1 or Shade 3 K3118-2.
  • Choose open glasses instead for quick incidental torch work — see welding safety glasses.
  • Choose a helmet instead for arc welding — the welding helmets guide.

What Does the Jackson WS (flip) Protect Against?

Hazard Fit Buyer guidance
IR/UV from oxy-fuel cutting and brazing Shade 5 Correct density for this process class.
Sparks, slag & spatter Sealed The goggle body blocks multi-angle spatter open glasses miss.
Grinding particles & impact ANSI Z87.1 Impact-rated — see Z87.1 explained.
Arc-welding radiation Not suitable Arc work needs a helmet, not a fixed-shade goggle.

What the Jackson WS (flip) Does NOT Protect Against

  • It is not for arc welding (MIG/TIG/stick) — those require an auto-darkening helmet.
  • The flip plate is for IR cutting work, not a single sealed grinding lens.
  • It is not a face shield — add one over the goggle for full-face grinding coverage.

Important: Filter shade must match the process intensity — too light underprotects against IR/UV (risking photokeratitis and retinal damage), too dark causes strain that leads workers to remove protection. Verify the correct shade against the shade-number reference and OSHA 1910.133 before use.

Best Applications

Cutting with inspection

Flip the Shade 5 plate up to line up and inspect, down to cut — the flip-front's core advantage.

Over-the-glasses brazing

Fits over Rx frames for brazing; light soldering is comfier in Shade 3.

Grinding & fabrication

The impact-rated lens lets it double for grinding; round out the kit with welding respirators and the helmet range.

Pros
  • Flip-front plate to inspect work
  • Fits over most prescription glasses
  • ANSI Z87.1+ high impact
  • Heat-resistant frame
Cons
  • Pricier than the fixed round WS
  • Shade 5 too dark for soldering
  • Not for arc welding
  • Flip hinge is a wear point

Jackson WS (flip) vs Other Welding & Cutting Goggles

Goggle Shade Style Best for
Lincoln K3118-1 5 Wide sealed Cutting + grinding
Lincoln K3118-2 3 Wide sealed Light cutting, brazing
Forney 55320 5 Flip-up cup Oxy-acetylene, inspect between cuts
Forney 55301 5 Fixed cup Budget oxy-acetylene
Jackson WS (round) 5 Round, OTG indirect-vent Over-the-glasses cutting
Jackson WS (flip) 5 Flip-front, OTG Flip to inspect + OTG
Sellstrom Odyssey II 5 Sealed indirect-vent High-temp / foundry

Jackson WS flip vs round

Both are Shade 5 IRUV OTG goggles; the flip-front flips the plate up to inspect, the round WS is fixed and cheaper. Verdict: flip-front if you inspect often, round to save.

Jackson WS flip vs Forney 55320

Both flip up to inspect. The Jackson WS flip fits over glasses with a polycarbonate IRUV plate; the Forney 55320 is a traditional glass-filter cup goggle. Verdict: Jackson WS for OTG fit, Forney for classic glass-filter gas welding.

A must for confined space welding
Many products like these goggles and I’m not a fan of the single color option, but I must say they’ve held up admirably in numerous confined space welding operations. There are jobs I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to perform if it weren’t for these goggles. I personally pair them with a bandanna tied around the lower half of my face and the goggles resting over the top of that, but these could also work with a flame retardant hood. Lenses are easily replaceable to the welder’s liking. The head strap is durable and doesn’t move easily once tightened. The flip-up lens holder hasn’t weakened with countless openings and closings. In short, I definitely recommend these goggles and would happily buy them again, especially if they came in black.

Worked great for the eclipse
Standard lens, easily replaced with a #15, flipped up the filter during totality, then flipped back down. Pretty slick, great price, not made in Red China.
