Moldex 9000 Series Full Face Respirator (9001 9002 9003) β Reusable Tight-Fitting Facepiece, APF 50 Overview
The Moldex 9000 Series full face respirator is a reusable, tight-fitting full facepiece built for workers who need eye and respiratory protection in one mask. It ships in three sizes β 9001 (small), 9002 (medium), and 9003 (large) β so you can match the facepiece to the wearer for a reliable seal. As a NIOSH-approved air-purifying full facepiece, it provides an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 50 under OSHA 1910.134 when fitted with the correct cartridges and worn on a clean-shaven sealing surface.
This is an air-purifying respirator, not a powered or supplied-air unit. It uses Moldex bayonet-mount cartridges and filters, which are sold separately, so you configure the respirator to your hazard β organic vapor, acid gas, P100 particulate, or combination protection. Pair it with Moldex 7000/9000-series cartridges such as the Moldex 7107 organic vapor cartridge or the Moldex 7307 organic vapor/acid gas cartridge to complete the assembly. If you are unsure which media to run, see our how-to-choose-a-cartridge guide.
- Because protection depends on a tight face seal, the 9000 Series requires a clean-shaven face, an annual fit test, and a user seal check every time you don it. Facial hair across the sealing surface defeats the seal β review respirators and facial hair before buying. For a full breakdown of respirator classes and selection, read the respiratory protection guide. Browse more options in full-face respirators and the broader respiratory protection range. Never use this respirator in IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres, or against gases and vapors with poor warning properties beyond cartridge service-life limits.
What It Is Built For
| Use case | Fit | Buyer guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Spray painting, coatings, and solvent work | Strong fit | Pair the full facepiece with organic-vapor or OV/acid-gas cartridges plus a particulate prefilter for paint mist. The full-face design also shields the eyes from overspray. |
| Chemical handling with eye-irritant vapors | Strong fit | APF 50 full-face coverage protects eyes and lungs together. Select cartridges rated for the specific acid gas or organic vapor present. |
| Dust, grinding, and abrasive blasting particulates | Good fit | Run P100 particulate filters on the bayonet mount. Note that abrasive blasting often requires a supplied-air respirator, not an air-purifying one β verify against the hazard assessment. |
| Workers with facial hair on the sealing surface | Poor fit | A tight-fitting facepiece cannot seal over a beard. Choose a loose-fitting PAPR instead from our powered air-purifying respirators. |
| IDLH or oxygen-deficient entry | Not suitable | Air-purifying respirators are prohibited in IDLH or low-oxygen atmospheres. Use a supplied-air or SCBA system rated for the conditions. |
Respirators must be selected, fit, and maintained under a written program per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Tight-fitting facepieces require a clean-shaven seal, an annual fit test, and a user seal check every time they are donned; loose-fitting PAPR hoods and helmets do not seal to the face but still require the program and the correct assigned protection factor. Use only NIOSH-approved cartridges/filters matched to the specific hazard, never use any air-purifying respirator in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere, and follow the change-out schedule. See the respiratory protection guide and how to do a user seal check.
Pros & Cons
- Reusable full facepiece with integrated eye protection in one mask
- APF 50 air-purifying protection when correctly fitted (OSHA 1910.134)
- Three sizes (9001 S / 9002 M / 9003 L) for a better individual seal
- Bayonet-mount accepts a wide range of Moldex cartridges and filters
- Cartridge swap lets one facepiece cover vapor, gas, and particulate hazards
- Cartridges and filters are sold separately β not included with the facepiece
- Requires clean-shaven face, annual fit test, and user seal check
- Not a PAPR or supplied-air unit; no blower or air supply
- Cannot be used in IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres
- Bayonet mount limits you to compatible Moldex-series cartridges
How It Compares
Within the Moldex 9000 Series, the three models are the same full facepiece in different sizes β choose by face fit, not by feature:
| Model | Size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Moldex 9001 | Small | Smaller facial dimensions; users where the medium leaks at the seal check |
| Moldex 9002 | Medium | The most common fit for average adult face sizes |
| Moldex 9003 | Large | Larger facial dimensions; users where the medium feels tight or rides high |
All three accept the same Moldex bayonet cartridges and filters and deliver the same APF 50 when properly fitted. Confirm the right size with a fit test rather than guessing. If a tight-fitting seal will not work for your crew (for example, beards), step up to a loose-fitting unit from our powered air-purifying respirators instead.
