What to check before you buy
Stretch film unitises a pallet; it does not secure a load for transport. Wrapping holds boxes together on the pallet so they do not shift or topple during handling. It carries no working load limit and contributes nothing to the aggregate working-load-limit math in the federal cargo securement rules (49 CFR 393.106), which applies to rated tie-downs. A wrapped pallet still gets strapped to the vehicle.
- Gauge and true thickness
- Gauge describes film thickness. Higher gauge means more puncture resistance and holding force; lower gauge stretches further per roll but tears more easily on sharp corners.
- Cast versus blown film
- Cast film unwinds quietly, is clearer and stretches smoothly. Blown film is tougher and resists puncture better but is noisier and hazier.
- Pre-stretched film
- Pre-stretched film has already been elongated during manufacture, so it needs less force to apply - useful for hand wrapping and for reducing operator strain.
