Moldex 9000 Series Full Face Respirator (9001 9002 9003) β€” Reusable Tight-Fitting Facepiece, APF 50 Overview

The Moldex 9000 Series full face respirator is a reusable, tight-fitting full facepiece built for workers who need eye and respiratory protection in one mask. It ships in three sizes β€” 9001 (small), 9002 (medium), and 9003 (large) β€” so you can match the facepiece to the wearer for a reliable seal. As a NIOSH-approved air-purifying full facepiece, it provides an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 50 under OSHA 1910.134 when fitted with the correct cartridges and worn on a clean-shaven sealing surface.

This is an air-purifying respirator, not a powered or supplied-air unit. It uses Moldex bayonet-mount cartridges and filters, which are sold separately, so you configure the respirator to your hazard β€” organic vapor, acid gas, P100 particulate, or combination protection. Pair it with Moldex 7000/9000-series cartridges such as the Moldex 7107 organic vapor cartridge or the Moldex 7307 organic vapor/acid gas cartridge to complete the assembly. If you are unsure which media to run, see our how-to-choose-a-cartridge guide.

Because protection depends on a tight face seal, the 9000 Series requires a clean-shaven face, an annual fit test, and a user seal check every time you don it. Facial hair across the sealing surface defeats the seal β€” review respirators and facial hair before buying. For a full breakdown of respirator classes and selection, read the respiratory protection guide. Browse more options in full-face respirators and the broader respiratory protection range. Never use this respirator in IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres, or against gases and vapors with poor warning properties beyond cartridge service-life limits.

What It Is Built For

Use case Fit Buyer guidance
Spray painting, coatings, and solvent work Strong fit Pair the full facepiece with organic-vapor or OV/acid-gas cartridges plus a particulate prefilter for paint mist. The full-face design also shields the eyes from overspray.
Chemical handling with eye-irritant vapors Strong fit APF 50 full-face coverage protects eyes and lungs together. Select cartridges rated for the specific acid gas or organic vapor present.
Dust, grinding, and abrasive blasting particulates Good fit Run P100 particulate filters on the bayonet mount. Note that abrasive blasting often requires a supplied-air respirator, not an air-purifying one β€” verify against the hazard assessment.
Workers with facial hair on the sealing surface Poor fit A tight-fitting facepiece cannot seal over a beard. Choose a loose-fitting PAPR instead from our powered air-purifying respirators.
IDLH or oxygen-deficient entry Not suitable Air-purifying respirators are prohibited in IDLH or low-oxygen atmospheres. Use a supplied-air or SCBA system rated for the conditions.

Respirators must be selected, fit, and maintained under a written program per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Tight-fitting facepieces require a clean-shaven seal, an annual fit test, and a user seal check every time they are donned; loose-fitting PAPR hoods and helmets do not seal to the face but still require the program and the correct assigned protection factor. Use only NIOSH-approved cartridges/filters matched to the specific hazard, never use any air-purifying respirator in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmosphere, and follow the change-out schedule. See the respiratory protection guide and how to do a user seal check.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Reusable full facepiece with integrated eye protection in one mask
  • APF 50 air-purifying protection when correctly fitted (OSHA 1910.134)
  • Three sizes (9001 S / 9002 M / 9003 L) for a better individual seal
  • Bayonet-mount accepts a wide range of Moldex cartridges and filters
  • Cartridge swap lets one facepiece cover vapor, gas, and particulate hazards
Cons
  • Cartridges and filters are sold separately β€” not included with the facepiece
  • Requires clean-shaven face, annual fit test, and user seal check
  • Not a PAPR or supplied-air unit; no blower or air supply
  • Cannot be used in IDLH or oxygen-deficient atmospheres
  • Bayonet mount limits you to compatible Moldex-series cartridges

How It Compares

Within the Moldex 9000 Series, the three models are the same full facepiece in different sizes β€” choose by face fit, not by feature:

Model Size Best for
Moldex 9001 Small Smaller facial dimensions; users where the medium leaks at the seal check
Moldex 9002 Medium The most common fit for average adult face sizes
Moldex 9003 Large Larger facial dimensions; users where the medium feels tight or rides high

All three accept the same Moldex bayonet cartridges and filters and deliver the same APF 50 when properly fitted. Confirm the right size with a fit test rather than guessing. If a tight-fitting seal will not work for your crew (for example, beards), step up to a loose-fitting unit from our powered air-purifying respirators instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Moldex 9000 model should I buy β€” 9001, 9002, or 9003?

They are the same full facepiece in three sizes: 9001 is small, 9002 is medium, and 9003 is large. Most adults fit the 9002 medium, but the only reliable way to choose is a fit test. Order the size that passes a fit test and user seal check for the individual wearer.

Are cartridges or filters included with the Moldex 9000 facepiece?

No. The 9000 Series is sold as the full facepiece only. You buy Moldex bayonet-mount cartridges and filters separately and match them to your hazard, such as the Moldex 7107 organic vapor cartridge or the 7307 organic vapor/acid gas cartridge.

What is the assigned protection factor (APF) of the Moldex 9000?

As a tight-fitting full facepiece air-purifying respirator, it carries an APF of 50 under OSHA 1910.134 when fitted with appropriate NIOSH-approved cartridges and worn with a proper seal. APF assumes a passing fit test and a clean-shaven sealing surface.

Is the Moldex 9000 a PAPR or powered respirator?

No. It is a non-powered, air-purifying full face respirator with no blower, battery, or supplied air. Air moves through the cartridges as you breathe. If you need a powered unit, see our powered air-purifying respirators.

Does the Moldex 9000 require a fit test?

Yes. Because it relies on a tight face-to-respirator seal, OSHA 1910.134 requires an annual fit test and a user seal check each time you put it on. It will not provide its rated protection on a wearer who has not passed a fit test.

Can I wear the Moldex 9000 with a beard or stubble?

No. Facial hair that crosses the sealing surface breaks the seal and voids the protection. The wearer must be clean-shaven where the mask meets the face. If facial hair is required, choose a loose-fitting PAPR; see our guide on respirators and facial hair.

Which cartridges fit the Moldex 9000 Series?

It uses the Moldex bayonet mount and accepts compatible Moldex-series cartridges and filters β€” organic vapor, acid gas, combination, and P100 particulate options. Confirm compatibility against the cartridge listing, and see our how-to-choose-a-cartridge guide if you are unsure which media you need.

Can I use the Moldex 9000 in an IDLH or oxygen-deficient space?

No. Air-purifying respirators, including this one, are prohibited in IDLH atmospheres and where oxygen is below 19.5%. Those conditions require a supplied-air respirator or SCBA. Always work from a hazard assessment before selecting a respirator.

How is the full face version different from a half-mask respirator?

A full facepiece covers the eyes as well as the nose and mouth, adds eye protection, and carries a higher APF of 50 versus 10 for a half mask. If you do not need eye protection or the higher APF, a half-mask respirator may be more economical.

How do I perform a user seal check on the Moldex 9000?

After donning and adjusting the straps, cover the cartridges and inhale gently β€” the facepiece should pull in slightly and hold. Then cover the exhalation valve and exhale gently to check for outward leaks. See our user seal check guide for the full procedure. Do this every time before entering the hazard area.

Is the Moldex 9000 reusable, and how do I maintain it?

Yes, the facepiece is reusable. Clean and disinfect it after use, inspect the lens, valves, and straps for damage, and replace cartridges and filters per your change-out schedule and the manufacturer's instructions. Store it clean and dry away from heat and chemicals.

Fits great, filters great, I feel confident I'm protecting my lungs
Do I like the price? No. But when I saw how much concrete dust was coming out of those little pink filters, I was glad I paid it, because that would have been in my lungs otherwise.I wore this mask for hours without any discomfort. The 4 straps are really good at tightening the mask around my face to seal things up. You're supposed to have this professionally fitted, so I might have gotten lucky getting it to fit right while purchasing thru Amazon. In fact, I had some questions about the filters and contacted the manufacturer for clarification and that's when i found out about the fitting requirement. The guy seemed a little annoyed the mask was being sold without a fit test. And one thing's for sure, if you were using this in a dangerous gas environment, you would want it to fit tight (and get the right filters too.)I'm using this strictly to filter particulates like cement dust and sheetrock dust, and it's working great for that. The face shield keeps sheetrock dust out of my eyes, but there is a bit of cling to the mask that I sometimes stop to wipe off. So far I've kept the mask scratch free by using a micro fiber cloth to clean it, and it's doing great. Really happy with this.

Great mask but the straps ruin it
Bought this mask and it worked well for me for a time. Then the straps stretched out and the mask leaked. I had to buy a 2nd mask and it's straps stretched out very quickly, so it leaks too. Can't just buy the headpiece either. These guys should make the straps with more strap and notches to remedy this. I won't buy Moldex any longer because the straps are the weak link. Good comfortable mask and lightweight though for a short time, but too expensive to just get a handful of uses out of. The mfr. should make the headstrap piece better.

Favorite Full-Face Respirator
For asbestos work, I have used several other brands of full-face respirator and I definitely like this one best. It's light weight, has a comfortable rubber seal, has quick releasing filter cartridges, has cheap N95 pre-filter attachments, and it doesn't mess with my peripheral vision. A great mask and good price.

Nice mask
Comfortable mask with good seal to face. Easy off/on and filter replacement. Only gave a 4 because I could not find a replacement face piece anywhere, even on the Moldex website.
